How many times has Shane Mosley switched between 147 and 154? Same process to come down 15 pounds, but a little lengthier. At 147 pounds, Shane sure looked great at 37, for a young Margarito. That was long after after winning a world title at 154 and fighting several bouts there.

rjack58 says.., “”Whatever weight you’re at for a long time is where the body wants to be.”

NOPE!!!

It doesn’t make any difference what “the body” wants.. It’s what YOU want, and how disciplined you are at achieving it.

Hopkins is one of the most disciiplined boxers ever. If he wanted to eat 2 meals a day on a diet that wasn’t particularly interesting he’d do it. If he had to be inactive for 3 months, just running and sprinting, to dissipate that LHW muscle mass he could do it. He went up 15 pounds for Tarver without blinking. He could come down 15 pounds for Floyd without blinking. It would take 3 months but it wouldn’t be a problem if he has 2 more months for full bore training as a middleweight. It would take 5 months all told. They could fight in May easy.

If he made mistakes coming down to 160 like Roy Jones made in coming down from heavyweight to 175??? That would hurt him.. Floyd would box his ass off if he messed up with the weight loss.. I would expect him consult the right people and take the weight off the right way — so he could go 12 hard dominating rounds having a massive height and 20-pound ring weight advantage over Floyd.

al bundy

if this fight happens, Floyd would not get any round… there is NO way that Floyd can approach Hopkins. If there is one, who can corner Mayweather, it is Hopkins. Floyd will not take this fight. It is hard to find Bernard in the ring, it was hard for Pavlik, Taylor and many strong, quick dudes. Mayweather is much smaller. From the other side, Hopkins needs to drain himself to 160, which is the same as applying for Social Security Disability benefits… after he is going to achieve that…

How a Mayweather/Hopkins fight will go down? like a smelly turd that gets stuck when you flush and stinks up your bathroom that’s how it will go down..

Posted October 29, 2013 10:23 am

rjack58

Tark,

Going down to 160lbs will not be as easy as you put it. Hopkins will either struggle to get down – 7 years is a long time (Chad Dawson had 6 months to lose 7 lbs for a fight against Ward not having fought at 168lbs for 6 years) since B-Hop last fought at 160lbs, OR he will struggle on fight night after making weight and not being able to rehydrate up (there will be a rehydration clause).

Whatever weight you’re at for a long time is where the body wants to be, that’s why people who lose a lot of weight usually gain all of the weight back that they lost, cause once you get BIG the body knows it and wants to be at that weight. A real skinny person that cannot gain weight, their body knows only being skinny and tries to keep them skinny. Once they gain weight the body now knows the larger weight that they’re at and wants to keep them at that heavier weight.

The Bible & Voice of Boxing

I do not feel this fight should happen as B-hop is too big for Floyd. I think B-hop is trying to setal Floyd’s glory. Why does he not call out one of the monsters at 175, Kolakev or Stevenson or offer to drop to 160 and face Three G’s? It is just strictly money. I am not a huge fan of Floyd but give him his dues he eraned it the hard way. Bernard is just an old man who keeps beating father time and deserves respect for that but he is also extremely boring and dirty.
Like him or hate him, at least Floyd fights with precision and comsumate skill even if some may think it is boring. I think he is great but as I always say, he is ATG skill but poor taste and judgement in the way he acts. That does not stop him from being great which he is. B-hop lost prime time to Super Roy but his midlife adjustment and strategies have made him very hard to bet. I hope Floyd does not lose his 0 to this ancient alien!

I find it first hard to think that Hopkins could get down to the 160 and fight just as effectively, didn’t he say that he as not as good anymore at 160 when he lost twice to Jermain Taylor? It would be an intersting fight though, as Hopkins would be the tallest fighter I believe that Mayweather has fought. Corrales was 6 feet, but at the time was going through a lot of problems, and I believe had trouble making weight. I would see Mayweather winning this fight, but maybe not by the margin th writer thinks. Also, I would be suprised if the fight ever happens.

TARK

This pundit is wrong in every single respect I can think of. Hopkins has the worst possible style for Floyd… It’s a nightmare matchup for Money May

A catchweight of 165—or even 160—would play right into Hopkins’ hands.. Hopkins fought at 160 or lighter until he was 41 years old—so dissipating the excess muscle weight would take 3 months. By cutting protein intake slightly, lying around resting a lot, and doing NO training except running and sprinting.

Roy Jones took off 25 pounds of muscle for Tarver—but did it all wrong.

Your muscles don’t want to dissipate when you exercise them. They shrink when you DON’T exercise. Once the extra muscle weight dissipates B-Hop will be a middleweight again. Then he can go into full workout mode. Bernard could weigh-in at 160 and weigh 170 to 173 on fight night. Floyd would weigh 150 or less. Weighing more than that would not work for Floyd.

Hopkins is taller than anyone Mayweather fought. Not everyone’s height helps them.. Leonard, Hagler, and Barkley overpowered Hearns.. Jermain Taylor is tall, but he telegraphed every punch and he didn’t know how to clinch when he got hurt. Hopkins is as skilled as Floyd. He would put his height and strength advantages to maximum benefit.

He would take Floyd’s jab away. He would shut down Floyd’s outside game.

On the inside Hopkins would beat down on Floyd’s head with chopping rights and rip him with left uppercuts and hooks. He would make a brawl out of it on the inside—and block Floyd’s jab nearly out of existence on the outside.

Oh, and this will never happen.

Floyd will not take a chance on Hopkins. He isn’t into fighting anyone with a pulse.

Floyd is a ho who has successfully duped tons of idiots into believing he’s great, all the while not fighting anyone worth while/at the right time.

He’ll find a way out of this one. Even if Hopkins has to kill himself to make the catchweight, Floyd will not take the chance. He knows better than to fight a guy with experience like Hopkins has, he’s made a career out of not fighting guys who have a chance (but would probably lose anyway).

He knows better.

Rjack, you are certainly free to take as much “creative license” as you want with your artcles but understand it does make you look like a guy who is not trying to do any real investigative work, nor put out something that stirs worthy debate… Anthony Mundine and a SLEW of boxers have called out Mayweather yet you do a “what if” that basically seems LARGELY untethered to reality… Of course Hops wants a MEGA payday but even your projections are pure nonsense 100 mill for Floyd and 20 mill for Hopkins? Thats NEVER happening and unless FMJ somehow faces a rejuvenated Pacquiao I doubt he ever clips 2 million buys again… I guess you don’t want to be taken seriously so I apologize if that is what I am doing when discussing the off the wall scenarios and projections you are selling here… If you do want to be seen a a CREDIBLE resource then perhaps dialing down the overuse of Floyds name and presenting more realistic scenarios will suit you… AGAIN your choice…

Hopkins can’t make 160 no matter what he says. If he does he won’t make it past the ring walk. Yes they keep saying they will meet anybody at 154 to 168 but have yet to prove otherwise.

Hopkins couldnt deal with speed in his prime. At 48, and with diminished power at 175, Mayweather would beat an old weight drained Bhop him from pillar to post at 160. This would be circus act, and Hopkins greed would ultimately jeopardize his health.

CORRECTION: Taking a shellacking

Posted October 28, 2013 9:14 am

TJ

HOPKINS needs to really THINK long and hard before going for MAYWEATHER, because even he cannot cheat the hands of FATHER TIME.
If he gets down to 160 to face Floyd I predict that will be the end of his competitive career (W,L or D), and the reasons being RJJ, CHAD DAWSON even ROAD WARRIOR and many more have gone up or down the weights in significant fashion and NEVER been the same again.
They lost something of themselves and is why CHAD was a DEAD MAN WALKING even before the bell rang for his bout with SUPERMAN.
It’s common knowledge that yo-yo dieting is harmful in the long run to human beings and what B-Hop and the others are doing is dropping huge amounts of body weight- in Hop’s case it will be natural muscle and fibrous tissues from a 49 year old body and then getting PUNCHED. In the head and STOMACH several times over 12 rounds by one of the sharpest and most precise technicians to ever step foot in a ring.
Perhaps B-Hop knows this is checkout time and wants to exit stage left witha few million in his pocket.

He’s looking at other career ending bouts versus KOVALEV and GOLOVKIN and feels this may be less painful, but in the long run, he could be making his biggest mistake.

Shredding yourself to make weight and then peaking a shellacking is prime ammunition for brain damage and serious health issues in later life.

I also feel that this will not do anywhere near 3M PPV. I would be surprised if it did 2M, which is a good figure anyways!

This ain’t happening and the PPV projections Are a complete JOKE… I’m what world would this circus fight pull 3.1 million buy??? Hopkins is not a solid PPV fighter his numbers against Dawson were abysmal suddenly he’s gonna be part of the BIGGEST fight in history?? Yeah right…. Neither GGG or Hopkins are gonna share a ring with Floyd Mayweather, Golovkin stopping the unknown Stevenson will not change a single thing as it pertains to him being enough of a draw to get Floyd to face a 160 pounder… Mayweather has NEVER fought successive bouts above 147, and Hopkins and GGG surely are not gonna change that bit of history…Rjackson keeps saying all it takes is $$$$$$$ “Mayweather and Pacquiao” NEVER fought and that was easily the most hyped contest of the last 10 years and the projections were off the charts… GGG and Hops Cannot draw flys compared to Pacquiao

This is a ‘make believe’ article!! Hopkins HAS called Mayweather out and ‘REALLY’ wants to fight him, that’s the one real thing here.

Hopkins is a physical specimen, but even he cannot evade father time and DRAINING himself down to 160lbs AFTER 7 years will HURT him too. He WILL be weakened and without energy!!

Floyd WILL request a REHYDRATION clause for Hopkins if that fight is to be made plain and simple. Floyd will not allow Hopkins to rehydrate himself up to 180lbs!!

Anonymous, Hopkins is five inches taller than Floyd, not three. He’s naturally a much bigger man than Floyd is.

Really though, I can’t see this fight happening, not even for megamillions. Why? Because Floyd Sr. wanted Canelo to come down to 147 to fight his son. Why in the world would he consent to 160 for Hopkins?

I hope this fight doesn’t happen. It would be a carnival act. Kind of a freak show.

Completely pointless fight. Neither fighter will get any credit for winning.
If Floyd wins, people will say he beat an old weight drained fighter.
Ig Hopkins wins, they’ll say he beat a guy hes 5 inches taller than and 35 lbs heavier than naturally.

Posted October 28, 2013 7:12 am

Wow, so you can be specific enough to know what both trainers will say between rounds yet omit any mention of how a 3″ difference in both height and reach would affect things. It’s not as simple as “picking him off with counters” when they guy is three whole inches taller than you; there’s no reason to believe he’d miss and anyway, in the case of Hopkins, the top of his head follows behind every shot so there’s not much space for the picking off. I can see why Hopkins would pursue such a fight though – even at half the purse of a normal Floyd opponent he’d be doing better than ever before and after Saturday, who would pay to watch him again anyway?

not a bad little fable.you got the numbers($) right. but it won’t happen. by the way, bernard can make that weight without too much trouble.if you don’t agree, then you don’t know hopkins.hopkins lives like a monk, and doesn’t fall prey to big macs. he would not agree to a rehydrate clause because he doesn’t come in the ring more than a couple of pounds more than what he weighs in @ light heavy.he is a natural 160 lb. middleweight. mayweather doesn’t k.o. anyone but dummy’s with their hands down at 147-54. both are counter punchers.i don’t see floyd beating up b-hop and landing up and down combos.bernard looked slow last night, but being a good fighter isn’t always about speed.it’s timing.bernard was never a speedster, but had quickness. it would make a lot of money. i don’t see this fight being made.let’s just say if it was made, bernard would not get his ass kicked with his skill set.but ‘lil floyd has a good chance to win on point’s.big difference in reach and size.it’s a pick ‘em fight.
