Moorer….Dwight Muhammad Qawi… Johnny Nelson…Juan Carlos Gomez…. Vassiliy Jirov….the guy Jones refused to fight.
Charles and Archie fought as heavies at “Cruiser weight”…..Then Archie would drop twenty pounds down and defend his lt. heavy belt. Ademek was not a joke…..neither was Hill.who beat that Frenchman too, back when the Frenchman was in his prime.
After Holy, Cruiser was not a ‘weak’ division….just one who could not get any publicity. Today it gets as much publicity as Lt. Heavy or Middleweight.

Any good cruiser is as fit as a Klitchko….no swabble bellies unless the guys coming up from Jr. Middle., looking for a payday. Lot of fat heavies clumping around.

Posted November 23, 2013 1:25 pm

Mr. D

Steve Cunninham is a very underrated cruiserweight, fought many guys who were champions, Marco Huck, Guillermo Jones etc.and often fought in the opponents home country as well. Would have been great if he fought Haye a few years back, it would have unified most of the belts. Though I would pick Haye to win, Cunningham deserves a mention.

Without light heavyweight and heavyweight who fighted under 200 pounds; IMHO David Haye is not at top-5 in the history of the cruiserweigth class (1979?-2013), and i’m sure O’Neill Bell would have KO Haye before 2008 and maybe even Adamek would have beat Haye; Mormeck was to nice against Haye he should have finished him early, and for the last think; it would be great if Michale Spinks would have fought Evander Holyfield in cruiserweigth (yes The Real Deal is the best of the division no doubt) sorry for my bad english!

Not a chance and not even close. Even with the division be relatively new and weak he didn’t defend his title enough and didn’t beat enough top guys. This guy has made his money with his mouth, not with his accomplishments.

Haye at #3 ??? – Slater, come on now… Above Dwight Muhammad Qawi?? Come on, you know too much about boxing for that nonsense.

Haye had what, about 21 fights total at cruiserweight. He beat Enzo Maccarinelli, big deal. So did Lee Swaby (7-9-1) – should we put Swaby on the list? Haye was KO’d by Carl Thompson, so should we put him on the list?

Above Toney? Toney beat Evander..

THE ROAR…
VERY INTERESTING comment re JOHNNY NELSON….
This was a fight that was fleetingly mentioned, but Johnny took about 14 months to decide whether or not he would box again and the moment disappeared as Johnny retired as reigning champion and moved into the media world of SKY BOXING.

I haven’t thought of this before, but now I do I think Johnny would outbox HAYE for a dull, hut unanimous decision.

Nelson fought a large number of fights as HEAVYWEIGHT all over the world and although mostly boring and negative, posed a decent jab, good reflexes and a sound defence…Nelson, a much better mover in the ring than David would stick and move and yen stick some more and would be able to take anything David could throw at him, as HAYE would not land a follow up!

As for HAYE vs MICHAEL MOORER, he was wrecking machine and a little unhinged and totally dangerous before he stepped up to Heavy. I can’t see HAYE standing up more than 6 rounds with the man from the KRONK. It’s unfortunate that the public only remember him as the meak and mild gentleman who got chinned by FOREMAN.
Moorer by devastating KO…..

Holyfield in his prime would rip through Haye as if he was made of paper. Haye would surely have been injured in the lead up to that one.

Posted November 22, 2013 3:07 pm

Jimmy

Haye is certainly dumbing down his own expectations. Once the savior of the heavyweight division, now trying to be included in being the 2nd best in a historically weak division, that he did not even clean out.

Posted November 22, 2013 3:05 pm

Mo-Box

“He would beat Evander. Probably knock him out.” A prime-to-prime conditions: Holy would maul Haye in the later rounds, much more brutal than Carl Thompson did. Remember how Holy took the best shots and kept going like a Duracell rabbit in the later rounds, Haye always had a stamina issues in CW plus his suspect chin. Haye had power, but even with top-end power you couldn’t KO iron-chinned Holy in his prime. Tyson hit Holy flush with his best shots and Holy took them for breakfast and kept coming for more.

The concept of cruiserweights, came along late in the boxing game, and there have not been that many outstanding names at the weight.
I think Johnny Nelson was hard to beat at cruiser, and I would have liked to see Nelson vs. Haye. Up until the 1980′s, fighters in the 200 pound range fought as heavyweights, so fighters like Patterson, Charles, Quarry, Machen, Folley, Cooper, Dempsey, Marciano etc.l, would all be, by toay’s standards, cruiserweights. Where would Haye fit in with them?

What?
Archie Moore would thrash David Haye eight ways to Sunday.
David talks about legacy. He drones on and on.
Put him up against James Toney in his prime.
Haye is the boxing version of Liberace
totally narcissistic : glitter and outrageous inflated self promotion.
Secretly he ‘d like to replace Steven Segal or The Rock
as Hollywood Action Man .

Ali could walk the walk as well as talk the talk. This Prince of the Broken Toe and press scuffle will join Audley Harrison as a curiosity at best..

In the after life maybe Marvin Hagler should do some active sparring with David while in a really turned off mood.

The Mongoose awaits for a more formal introduction.

Oh how quickly the “mighty” have fallen. Here’s a guy who could have had the world at his feet and now he’s hoping (maybe even begging) that the world remembers him as something special (2nd place cruiser for cryin’ out loud). Pathetic even from a guy whose toe-jam supposedly cost him a victory against Klitschko. If he had some courage he could have helped the heavyweight division, but instead all he did was talk. He’ll quickly be forgotten.

No he should be but only two world title fights can’t make him the best. I’d put De Leon ahead and even Nelson as he may have fought stiffs but 14 stiffs is better than a stumpy French Guy who sounds like a politician and a Welsh/Italian with a glass chin. Haye was better than anyone apart from Holyfield but his record don’t stand up.
