“If don’t like a certain boxer and his style simply don’t watch him.”

Well, we won’t have to watch Rigo any more. In fact, we won’t be able to watch him, ‘cos he’ll never be on the televised card again!

Well done, Rigo. Won the fight, but lost the money tug-o-war.

“If they lunge in and try to make it an exciting fight, for those that complain, Rigo will knock them out. Which is why Rigo opponents stay at bay.” – TC is exactly correct. If they want to win they’ve gotta bring heat. Problem is he counterpunches so well they decide to stop trying for fear of getting pounded. So his opponents are boring, not him.

Like I said before, we can call Rigo boring all we want. But he doesn’t run, he just always keeps the fight at his range, and his opponents can’t do nothing about it. If they lunge in and try to make it an exciting fight, for those that complain, Rigo will knock them out. Which is why Rigo opponents stay at bay. Don’t call Rigo boring for wining every round, call his opponents boring for not being able to do nothing about it.

Ah, looks like the “he’s boring” crew is out again in force. I find him more entertaining than most pure boxers. Rigo does it without running. He stays in the pocket for the most part and makes his opponents pay. That’s the style Whitaker did in the 90s only IMO Rigo runs less and is a bit more offensive. An artist at work. And BTW He passed VADA testing with flying colors, even though nobody required it.

Here’s an easy solution for you, and others like you who complain like little kids who didn’t get their candy money from mummy and daddy … next time Rigondeaux gets into the ring don’t watch him box. That way you save yourself the time of coming here and whining like a little kid. Alternatively you can go through it all again, and then come back here and complain about Rigondeaux again. If don’t like a certain boxer and his style simply don’t watch him.

Anonymous : What Smoger did was dangerous…But the corner was slow to react too…Thought it was retarde that wasn’t stopped sooner…And in worst case we won’t see Tapia in a ring again..

Killing Moon The Soothsayer

Eugthehuge : Riiiiiight…Rigo’s connect percentage really sucks if you only look at the numbers…What you fail to realize(Perhaps you didn’t watch the fight) is why he threw so many punches most of them were feints, shots to position Agbeko and combos which were meant to confuse him leading him to the moneyshot…And almost every punch had a reason…Actually I challenge you to find 35 punches without a reason, wild swings, out of position etc…Not only did Rigo hurt Agbeko every time he connected …He sucked the fight out of him as early as the 2nd round…By then Agbeko didn’t want any of it and hid in a shell rest of the fight….Every time he threw a punch he had one hand up…He never except for the 9th round were Mayweather was finally able to do something different…Rigo just danced around him making Agbeko look slow…So in the 10th Agbeko stopped
trying again…

Honestly I found this fight entertaining, educational and a true blueprint for the sweet science…There’s something about watching someone who’s the best at something.. doesn’t matter if it’s Federer,Woods,Maradona,Manning,Jordan etc I’m awestruck at anyone who’s that good at something even if the sport doesn’t exactly interest me…And I freakin hope some young up-and-coming boxing star out there is taking notes and starts studying this guy…How are boxers going to get better if they don’t have standards like Rigo to live up to….I’m not saying copy him 100%..But atleast try to apply yourself , so you’re able to set goals and improve yourself…There’s evolution in everything here(Hence boxing is not fought under the Broughton’s rules..You hit me i hit you) Rigo is the next evolutionary step in boxing..And he’s awesome…Sadly some people always want to fight evolution…Because they’re set in their old ways and can’t adapt…We all knows what happens to those species…They die and get extinct..

As Ivan Goldman put is:

“No amount of debating tricks can make you believe a movie that’s boring you is exciting. We know tedium when we feel it. Same goes for fighters like Rigondeaux….

Trouble is, professional sport is a branch of entertainment, and it stops being professional if you don’t entertain. Fans don’t pay to watch a leaky faucet and wait for the next drip to drop.

…Against Agbeko, who was coming up from bantamweight and hadn’t fought for 21 months, Rigo connected on only 144 of 859 shots for a miserable 17 percent connect rate. In what way is this masterful? Agbeko landed just 48 of 349.”

That is Rigo. 12 punches per round. Never take a risk. Always play it safe. Let the other guy take the initiative, counter-punch. And if the other guy is not the aggressor, then let the audience die in boredom.

Posted December 9, 2013 12:41 pm

toosalty

Agbeko landed 48 punches all night! (4 per round)- the second lowest total for a twelve round title fight in CompuBox’s 28 year history (Randall Bailey’s 45 landed punches vs. Devon Alexander is the record). Agbeko landed an avg. of 28 punches per round in his four wars with Abner Mares and Yonnhy Perez. Rigondeaux’s last 6 opponents landed just 16% of their total punches- #1 among all active championship caliber fighters. That takes REAL SKILL. its easy for yall to try and say the guy is not exciting. As a fan I feel sorry for the fans that left early, because they were watching greatness, but fail in love with fighting and not boxing. What kirkland and Tapia did does not even take talent. Margarito,Rios, etc those type of fighter have no talent. For a guy not to throw back that must tell you something. WOW

Lara won’t get a fight with Canelo… They suckered Trout in…but Canelo won’t bite on a Lara fight.. Trout looked like a 4-round fighter with no jab, right hook, or straight left.. The more he tried the harder his 3-year-old cried.. You don’t take a kid that age to a boxing match. He doesn’t understand why that man is beating up his daddy.

Lara opened Trout up with patience, movement, and expert timing. Lara beat Trout every round but the judges were kind … The same game can work with Floyd … Lara can only get better and Floyd can only get older.

Pot Shot Genius…, What you’re suggesting is Agbeko box Rigondeaux.. That won’t work.. Rigo has 400 amateur fights with only about 5 losses.. He’s seen everything.. He mastered every skill.

He doesn’t have to be big, or tall, or strong… He just boxes your ass off and doesn’t try anything that’s outside the scope of his abilities.

Both dominate their opponents to such an extent that people complain about being bored. These cry babies who don’t like it or don’t get it should watch UFC, they haven’t the intelligence to understand pure boxing skill. Not a great fight but it’s hard not to appreciate Rigondeux’ skills, even harder to think of someone dethroning him. Look forward to him and Lomachenko battling it out in a couple of years.
Floyd is a lucky man that Rigo is a couple of weights below him, perhaps Mayweather could fight him at 140 seeing as he he makes 147 so easily. I too think that Rigo has more skills than Mayweather, he wouldn’t be pulled into a messy Floyd fight.

Lara isn’t as great as Rigondeaux… He’s not as accomplished an amateur… However he’s the best opponent for Floyd so fight him.

Floyd now has THREE (3) great opponents he could fight.. 1. Lara… 2 Pacquiao… 3 Garcia… I can’t wait so see who Floyd chooses to fight next.

Hope it’s not like when Michael Nunn, Mike McCallum, and Julian Jackson were Ray Leonard’s top 3 challengers … and he cherry-picked Donny Lolonde.

Well how is that Rigo’s fault? It was up to Agbeko to bring Rigo out of his comfort zone, instead of letting him contently win every round with ease. Rigo’s not dumb he’s been boxing a long time. He knows what’s best for him, and winning without damage is in his best interest, even if it isn’t in his financial interest. He’s got battle scars, take a look at his left eye, something’s wrong with it. Yet he still goes out there and wins nearly every round… Once again, not too shabby.

Yep, Rigo won every round with ease. With ease. He’s a lazy, self-satisfied sh_t.

And complaining about Rigo is kind of dumb when he won every round with ease. Complain about Agbeko not wanting to do what it took to even come close to winning one round. Who’s fault is that, Rigo’s? 120-108 is not too shabby against a former Champion with height and size advantages.

The reason this fool compares Rigo to FMJ is because Mayweathers the Gold Standard for excellence in boxing..Rigondeaux is a guy with 13 pro fights he simply does not have the time in his career to generate the accomplishments of a Floyd Mayweather…. Rigo needs to only fight in Miami where there is a large Cuban following. Plain and simple. Arum knows this but he does not like Rigo and he is trying to make a point with him.

PEEJ

Still not sold on Lara. He just doesn’t do it for me. He did get the win but Trout is just not a come forward fighter and that is gonna cost him every time when he fights another counter puncher. Lara will never be the champ, only hold titles. Dirrell I thought won the fight but it was very close. I figured he was up by a round. He wasn’t active enough. And then when he ran the last 10 seconds of the fight, come on now, that fight was way to close to be doing that. When he did that, I knew it was gonna be a draw.

Posted December 8, 2013 11:10 am

Love-the-Sport

To be fair, Showtime did not do so great last nigh either.

– Dirrell looked tentative and acted like a child against Biko. Dirrell was constantly complaining to the refs and was very inactive in a fight that Biko really won outright.

– Porter upset and exposed Alexander … this is not really good for boxing because Porter is wild with limited skills and has a lot of development left before he is really an elite boxer

– Jadah looked like he did not want to fight anymore and lost a jabbing contest to Malignaggi

The only spark for Showtime was Lara who looked solid against Trout. Lara is a Cuban fighter who is developing his power and beginning to generate some knockouts at the elite level. Rigondauex should take some notes.

Overall it looked like the best fight of the night was in Europe with a crafty and tough Sturm knocking out Barker. Both HBO and Showtime had relatively weak cards.

Posted December 8, 2013 10:55 am

Love-the-Sport

Let’s be honest.

EVERYBODY IN THE ARENA LEFT AFTER THE KIRKLAND KNOCKED OUT THE YOUNG KID FROM JERSEY.

The only people left in the Arena where Bob Arum and the HBO team.

Rigondeaux has tremendous skills.

But NO ONE … NO ONE … NO ONE CARES.

It will take Rigondeaux 10 years of this type of boxing to win a fan base. Rigondeaux needs to generate knockouts if he is going to be relevant in the world of boxing.

His style is to boring.

Rigo is so effective that makes look as mediocre any fighter that he faces … Agbeko did not do a better job in this fight not because he did not want to do it, but because an superior opponent did not allowed him.

Just so you know: I was rooting for Rigo in his battle for exposure. “Bad Bob Arum,” I said. “Disrespecting a champion like that. Give him a go, HBO!”

So, they give him a go, and what does he do? Stinks out the joint – on purpose.

He could have finished the fight early – he’s clearly the best 122 out there – and entertained the crowd, and lifted his stocks with Arum and HBO.

But, no. Guillermo “It’s my way, or the highway” Rigondeaux doesn’t even try. He doesn’t want exposure, fans or money, it seems. He’s his own worst enemy. He’s an arrogant idiot.

Rigo doesn’t DO alot of things BETTER than Floyd. He does a FEW. The last #0 P4P opponent that Floyd faced he DOMINATED him SO BAD that he wanted a way OUT FAST. Agbeko gave UP on WINNING but he decided to stick around for the whole 12. Floyd made Ortiz QUIT and want OUT of the BUTCHERING in 4.

Posted December 8, 2013 6:30 am

Mick the Marmalizer

A win over Santa Cruz/Seda gives him the WBC belt & thus more bargaining power. A fight with PBF is out of the question. Rigo fights @ 122Lb, while Floyd can hit 154. Maybe a visit to featherweight could be on the cards, but not until super-bantamweight is cleaned out. Frampton, Martinez & Quigg are all there for the taking, if they have the thirst for it. If those fights happened in Europe the ca$h would be fantastic for him. As I see it though, Frampton fights Kiko & the winner gets Quigg, in a mini contender tournament.

Oh, yeah Tark. Tell me to go have my own fights. But totally ignore the point I’m making, which, if you really are that thick and have missed it, is that he doesn’t even try.

He’s completely dominant, for sure. I love his footwork, his superb balance, the way he adjusts distance minutely to make his opponent miss, etc – but he doesn’t have a go. He just stands there, waiting for his opponent.

If he met himself in a fight, nothing would happen.

Posted December 8, 2013 5:15 am

Boxtradamus

Let ME give Agbeko some advice. Stop raising and lowering your guard SO much because that’s what Rigo was using to TIME you. He used that to get into a rhythm and then it was OVER. The NICE thing about lots of AMATEUR experience is that it teaches you to figure your opponent out QUICK because its only 3 rounds. Rigo figured out Agbeko in the 1st round. By the 2nd round it was already over. You going to have to be a Highly SKILLED CHAMELEON to beat Rigo. And Agbeko is not that.

no clue

I appreciate the science of boxing just as much as any aficionado and this Cuban is a master of it… but I will never watch his fight in it’s entirety… he puts me to sleep by round 3-4 … I’ll settle for watching 2 minute highlight reel post fight, that’s it … can’t stomach a boxer who just coasts around looking to counter an opponent all night long and never presses the action with any degree of aggression

Posted December 8, 2013 4:17 am

It’s so painful to watch!!! Boring 12 rounds of sweet science!

Havoc

You can’t put sweet science vs. sweet science that will be a snoozer.

Posted December 8, 2013 4:05 am

TARK

Rigondeaux is exactly what boxing is all about.. Boxing isn’t fighting.. Boxing is the sweet science — the art of hitting without getting hit..

Rigo hit Agbeko with only 17% of his punches because most of his punches were decoy shots.. He won every round by a wide margin.. He’s on the cutting edge of Boxing science where you throw 5 or 6 punches to land one good scoring shot.. and your opponent doesn’t throw because he doesn’t have the opportunity to throw … and when he does throw his connect ratio is extremely low.

Rigondeaux represents another chapter in boxing science… He is where Boxing will be in another generation … He got hit solidly maybe 7 or 8 times but nothing with enough force to hurt him in the slightest..

Rigo could fight another 12-round fight next week if he wanted to — because sparring sessions are tougher on most guys than this fight was on Rigo.

i believe that Anne Wolfe just became the first trainer to ever provide her fighter with a new and improved chin and jaw(?!). how in the f’k is this the same Kirkland that was poked to unconsciousness by (???) Ishida!? when it comes to Kirkland, Wolfe knows eXactly which buttons to push. “you took his nuts. now you gotta take his heart” was precisely what Kirkland needed to hear at just the right moment. Kirkland has just planted himself in the Canelo, Cotto, and Lara bracket. he needs to confirm one of those bouts before he finds himself back in the ring v. Molina.

WINNING is more entertaining to your bank statement than LOSING. Pacquiao agrees with ME on that. HE took a 50% hit to his PPV buys after LOSING which is why he didn’t face Floyd 5 YEARS ago. The 50% hit would have come 5 YEARS ago instead of right NOW. Smart business move. I must COMMEND him on his business acumen.

If you can “hit and not be hit”, you can “KO and not be hit”. At least try to be entertaining.

He’s just a smug, self-satisfied boxer. And smug, self-satisfied people are inevitably boring.

Hidalgo you are so right,

NJ Comm must be insane to still use Smoger after what he did in Hopkins v Murat, letting a boxer get hit on the deck twice, no points taken, hit when their back is turned, shoving the boxer, pushing him in the face, then kissing Hopkins on camera. Smoger is 70 cannot walk, stand or move out of the way. He cannot break them and only uses one hand on one boxer, then the other boxer rushes in. Then he kisses Tapia tonight too?

WTF is this ref a closet homo, he lets the guy get blasted while the ref loses control again and turns his back on Kirkland. Lucky Tapia isn’t dead.

Worst ref now, what the hell is wrong with the NJ Comm using him after the Hopkins fiasco?

Smoger tells Tapia that if he keeps getting hit in the head he’s going to stop the fight. Then when Kirkland is pummeling Tapia, instead of jumping in abrubtly and forcing himself between them, he enables Kirkland to land a really devastating left hook. I really thought Tapia wasn’t gonna wake up for a while.

Smoger’s an idiot.

You may be right my friend. Johnny and Manny at 122 were both fantastic. Rigondeaux is certainly in their class and we can only guess at what may have happened if they had ever fought but my goodness Rigondeuax is a special talent. You can’t help but admire his brilliant skills. Talking of special fighters I was just watch an old video of Salvador Sanchez. I’m not sure how many people around here remember him because he passed away in 1982 at only 23 years old but he was also an incredible talent who may have gone on to be one of the greatest of all time.

“Boxtradamus

Rigo will WIN 12 out of 12 rounds clearly IF it makes it that far. Agbeko is claiming that he is going to bring the “WAR” to Rigo which will get you knocked OUT vs. a SUPERB counter puncher. Pacquiao agrees with ME on that.
Posted December 6, 2013 6:18 pm ”

Agbeko smartened UP and didn’t bring the “WAR” all night because he was getting SLICED, DICED, CHOPPED, and MINCED SO he put his guns in the holsters and hid behind his gloves like a SISSY. That’s why he didn’t get stopped. Its hard to stop a NON trying to WIN SISSY. SO Rigo took all 12 rds clearly as I predicted.

You know i think Vic Darchinayan should not have been forced to go up to 126 to fight Donaire. They should have let Vic fight Rigo. I think Rigo would have won. But Vic would have come to fight, and at 122 i think Vic would have had a veterans guile and a punchers chance to make it interesting. Agbeko to me was a recycled fighter with no name value. I would not say Rigo should not yet be proclaimed the best you have seen in 40 years JIM. Did you ever catch a prime Johnny Tapia at 118-122, you know what he would have done to this version of Agbeko. Or more recently how about the 122lb version of Manny pacquiao, how do you think the pressure and power punching of the Manny Pacquiao who knocked out Lebwada would have matched up to Rigo. I am not hating on Rigo i think he’s outstanding. But i think he’s 33 and they are wasting time on fights like this one. He needs better fights.

Big ham, right on BRO !!!!..GOOD AND REAL PROMOTION IS WHAT RIGO NEEDS
AT the very begining ,Arum put Rigo under contract, not to promote him,but to try to control him and ultimately to derail his aura, with one of his cashcows, that’s why he hopes lomachenko could derail the ,non media protegee and cuban ex-pat.Its so clear that even before lacing gloves in his 2dn professional bout and in spite be 2 divisions higher,Arum, mentionned Lomachenko and not kiko martinez, terrazas, mijares and others 122 and around.Nonito have nightmares with Rigo,so is Arum.

It looks like they are building towards a Lomachenako fight for Rigo. Great Idea. You never know though, they are building an Adonis Stevenson vs Kovalev fight during commentary and then they interview Adonis and he says he wants Carl Froch and Bernard Hopkins and he will fight Kovalev only if the money is right. I also remember anothered failed cuban promotion named Gamboa. Gamboa himself, with the help of his promotor did everything wrong possibly to ruin his commercial viability. It’s really not rocket science. Match the right fighters, and make Offers $$$ . HBO has the money, apply pressure on the promotors and fighters and get the good fights made.

Big ham: I don’t know…I think the other boxers know how good Rigo really is…Still thought Agbeko came to win, but after the 2nd round he got even more awestruck.. Watching Video on Rigo can’t really show how good he is when you enter his domain…So on a mental stage he’s already up prefight, during they can’t belive what’s happening…Afterwards you saw Agbeko just throwing his arms around Rigo…Almost thanking him not for humiliating him any more…Rigo must be the best…

Posted December 8, 2013 2:17 am

As was noted i did not care for Kirklands sucker punch at the end. That fight had been stopped and Smoger clearly was seperating it. HBO commentators gave him a pass. Good win by Kirkland though. Great excitement. I would favor Erislandy over him by decision, and perhaps Canelo by KO in a war, where Canelo shows the better defense and the better chin.

i thought the matchup was no good for Rigo and did him no favors in terms of raising his stock. Agbeko was a good fighter on paper but he was old and past it and did not have the hunger or aggression to press Rigo. Rigo is very skilled guy but i am ready to see him in with someone aggressive. Even donaire was extremely passive against Vic darchinyan in his next fight. He showed passiveness. A passive fighter is gonna make for a stinker with Rigo. I enjoyed the Donaire fight against Rigo. This one not so much. The threat was not there.

“A master piece by the master boxer.:

Almost a master piece. Rigo wasn’t able to close the show with a stoppage against a barely swinging Agbeko.

Clearly he had Agbeko flustered and mentally defeated, but all he could do for 12 rounds was pot shot and end the fight with a decision.

A Unanimous Decision, Boxtra$$wipe. Just as I said.
