GGG isn’t ducking Lara, GGG fights for HBO and Lara is with GB and they fight exclusively with Showtime (same reason he can’t fight Quillin)

Are you talking about the one looks like you on your best day, lil fella? In that case, yeah.

Happy Boy,
I got you talking out of your backside again.
You do know that Martinez is fighting in June, and you do know that Golovkins fighting in April. Martinez could have thrown down the gauntlet before he decided on an easier option, or do you think Cotto is in the same class as GGG?

Happyboy

I got GGG ducking Maravilla for Andy Lee.

Truth Teller

I don’t know how I feel about who I favor in the Cotto/Martinez fight. Martinez clearly lost his last fight IMO. That said, Cotto is the shorter, smaller guy and I’m not sure he’ll carry his punch up to 160. His power seemed diminished to me at 154 from what it was at 147 and 140. Cotto looked good against Rodriquez as he was supposed to….but Martinez has speed, power and good movement. It’s a pick ‘em fight to me….but either way, I don’t see the winner, regardless of if it is Martinez or Cotto, fighting GGG.

This is a 40/60 fight either way. If Cotto lands on Martinez accurate shots and Martinez get old is Over. If Martinez comes out and fights like he did against Williams Cotto is getting STOP probably KO.

“Pirog has been injured. And he actually got injured training for GGG. Apparently it was a bad injury because he hasn’t fought since then. Granted I never seen him fight but I know he did have a title… – PEEJ, it’s a back injury. Could be serious, maybe it required surgery. I saw two of his fights live, when he KTFO Jacobs and his title defense in Russia. Very talented boxer with a confusing and awkward style. He could hit with power from southpaw or orthodox, good skills for a pressure fighter. Wish he was around still.

Martinez is slicker than Cotto and Cotto can’t fight 12 hard rounds, he runs out of steam in the later rounds. I see Martinez winning 9-12 so Cotto better rack up the first 8 rounds and just try to hang in there the rest of the fight to get a MD.

Am a huge Cotto fan but I really think he’s gonna be up against it against Martinez. For me Cotto is the better boxer and has had the better career. Even at this stage of their careers Cotto is the better man. The problem though is Cotto’s size and weight. Cotto is not really effective at light middle weight and I would go as far to say he has struggled at welter weight against bigger fighters such as Margirito. So his chances all the way up at middleweight, against a 5’10 decent fighter like Martinez are pretty bleak. This is just a step too far. Trout was Cotto’s celing in term of how far he could push himself up the weight classes in fighting bigger and bigger fighters.

Hehehe, I really hope this fight comes off. I can see whingers like Woop Woop already squirming in their g-strings at the thought of having to eat their words.
I’ll be happy to say Golovkin wasn’t as good as I thought he was if Martinez beats him, though I can already foresee the feminine screams of “Martinez was old, Golovkin still sucks, Golovkin should fight Ward” coming from these message boards if Golovkin takes him out.

It reminds me very much of the position guys like Mayweather and Pacquiao get put into. Those that didn’t like Floyd were ranting and raving about how he needed to fight Canelo. He finally did, made Canelo look like a rank amateur, then the cry was “Oh, Canelo was just an unproven bum” (and ironically a lot of them then started squealing “Mayweather needs to fight Golovkin”).

I wanna see GGG fight a slick boxer like Martinez, as far as his power I know he does not hit as hard as Chavez Jr. Martinez should not have a problem, the only thing Martinez should worry about is father time.

And as for ggg I wouldn’t jump on the ggg band wagon so quick this kid haven’t fought any top quality opponent’s. yet you think he’s just gonna walk through Martinez y’all are crazy he is made to order for Martinez that’s why Martinez wants to fight him ggg hands are very slow Martinez will pick him apart Martinez will use ggg aggression against him ggg needs to be set to punch and every time he sets Martinez won’t be there don’t believe this hype train

There is no way cotto beats Martinez at 160 pounds cotto stands Wat 5.6 he’s going to look short and fat Martinez is 5.11 and he can crack cotto doesn’t have power at 154 Wat you think he’s going to have at 160.once he feels Martinez power he will be in full retreat cotto couldn’t beat trout Martinez stops cotto in 5

About time we have a new world middleweight title unification match.

We have not have that sence 2004 when Bernard Hopkins conqerd the WBO title from Oscar De la Hoya by KO 9, the 4th and final major world title belt that made Hopkins to the first boxer pound for pound to have in possession the lineal and all 4 major world title belts (WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO) and then later that year first champ to defend them all at same time against Howard Eastman, 12 UD.

Its time to have a new unified and undisputed middleweight world champion.

What a surprise, no response from GGG. All of a sudden Martinez wants to fight GGG. No not really, he always wanted to do that but GGG kept making noise when Martinez was busy, booked and scheduled. This is how GGG bluffs his blind followers. Still waiting for a response.

Srminimo, Loeffler may not always say what fans want to hear but he is a straight up guy, he’s a little boring but I’d take that over some of the colourful but completely unscrupulous promoters out there. If Tom had said something that placed blame on HBO but was untrue then HBO would be the first to come out and set the record straight, they have a reputation too and would not want it slighted by someone who is supposed to be working with them. The simple truth is that HBO does not like to approve fighters that work for Showtime, not if they can help it. This is not a secret, HBO and Showtime are not friendly, they are in direct competition and sometimes there is quite a bit of animosity between the two organizations. Is it childish and unnecessary? Yes, but it is what it is.

Martinez would run the hole fight if he face GGG! I wouldn’t want to waist my money now Cotto and GGG would be a great fight! It would be a war! These two men a great fighters GGG would win because he is younger!

Golovkin would be smart to go down to 154 to fight Lara this spring, then, if he’s successful, try to set up either a Mayweather fight or move back up to fight Martinez at 160. People are starting to call him out and he’s going to be in a good position to make some big fights in the near future if he plays his cards right.

The guy to beat GGG is not a boxer he mow a boxer down. Too busy
It’s will have to be A slugger who can take a punch and can out punch GGG.
Maybe cotto too small maybe, Shawn porter could he used to fight a a l.h weight and lost weight, or has to be some who come from above and fight at a catch weight like bruce similar.

Better to go out brave, sorry Sergio your not getting pass cotto.
It there anyone how might drop it’s will be you not cotto.

He trying to get cotto angry, cotto not buying and will see that low left. So you can’t even get your jab set up or you right hand on target,
Sergio ripe and does poorly with boxer, cotto one of the best boxer and body shot there is that will help Slow down a hurt prone fighter at the middle of the fight.
All cotto night, a good convincing win …..

It’s good to hear that if Martinez beats Cotto that he’ll want to face GGG. We need all of the divisions to get past personal politics and promoters political b/s and make the fights the way they’re supposed to be made. Martinez and Cotto are awesome. I’ll be happy with either man winning. I just hope whoever wins faces GGG next.

How long we going to call these fighters great before they prove themselves against quality opponent’s we. Maid that mistake with broner. Zuda. Pavlic. Khan. Prince naseem. And the list goes on I’m never going to pick a unproven fighter over a proven fighter it’s a lot more to boxing than hitting hard what about mental fortitude and being able to adapt and make chances during the fight we know Martine can are you sure triple g can

Titopia, Pirog has been injured. And he actually got injured training for GGG. Apparently it was a bad injury because he hasn’t fought since then. Granted I never seen him fight but I know he did have a title and was calling out Martinez and Martinez response was he brings no money to the table. When in fact Martinez brings no money either unless he is fighting in Argentina. But then you have to beware of the home cooking that he will get

Posted February 11, 2014 4:28 pm

Actually Chavez was the weakest out of all the titlest in that division. I am not disclaiming the fact the he is not the champ. But his resume at middleweight is weak. Pavlik was taking him on in a come back fight. But ended up losing. Martinez resume is very weak at Middleweight.

Fight Aficionado

I suspect Martinez is starting to feel the public pressure for his ducking of the last couple years. What if Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik had ducked him years ago? He’d never have been considered the man at 160. Now he’s gotta fight GGG to save face. According to oddsmakers he’s actually the odds on fave in that fight I’ll bet. If it happens it’s the biggest fight of 2014 IMO. That’s still a big “if” though.

Agree with Fight Aficionado. Hopefully Sergio Martinez and Gennady Golovkin meet in a big, big match later this year. Kudos to Sergio if he means it. I hope GGG is really up for the challenge too. Probably be best fight meeting of the year!

Whoa. This is surprising. DiBella even said on the record he would not put Martinez in with GGG. Maybe now that Martinez has banked several good HBO paydays he’s starting to think about his legacy. If so he gets props.

A unification fight between the two best middleweights makes sense, but it it too soon to get excited about it. What are the chances of Martinez staying injury free for the next six months? Once this thing is signed, I will be interested, but in this day and age, anyone can say anything and call anyone out. The hard part is getting the managers, promoters, and sanctioning bodies on board and the fighters into the ring. How long have we been discussing Mayweather and Pac on this site?

Posted February 11, 2014 2:52 pm

Titopa

PEEJ – You can dissect ANYONE’S resume, taking Chavez over Pirog or any of these other “ducked fighters” was a smart move…Chavez had the “name”, people also felt he was “the best at 160″ and he was a big strong guy, that was a challenge…you’d be a fool to think it wasn’t.

Posted February 11, 2014 2:50 pm

PEEJ

Lara should rematch Molina and Vanes considering he got draws against them and should of actually took an L in the Molina fight.

Posted February 11, 2014 2:47 pm

Titopa

I’m also a GGG fan, but he really hasn’t proven he can tangle (and beat) the TOP DOGS at 154 and 160, he has that “ora of invincibility”, but you must remember who he’s been beating…people fall in love with KO’s, they see this guy wrecking dudes and they think he can do it to ANYONE. Matthysse had that “ora”, look what happened? Pacquiao also had that, look what happened. Not saying he CAN’T beat the top guys, but you’d be foolish to think he’s guaranteed just cause of his power.

Posted February 11, 2014 2:46 pm

PEEJ

Titopia, yes he ducked all the top middles. His career is overrated. If you look at who he is fought, a loss to Margacheato, and then middle, yeah he beat Pavlik, I give him props for that. Other than that what has he done. All this garbage if getting a big pay day. That should stop. He declined to fight certain top fighters calling him out saying there was no money in it. News Flash, Martinez brings no money to the table either. He clearly lost against Murray. Yes his career is overrated. You have to earn a payday, not just come out saying that is all I am looking for is big paydays.

Posted February 11, 2014 2:46 pm

All of you must be fan-atic people to become so excited about the battles of these losers. Trout dominated Cotto. Lara dominated Trout and forced Angulo to quit, yet Cotto, who ducked Lara, get a shot at the title. All of them ducked Lara: Cotto, Martinez, Golovkins, and Canelo. You mean that makes Canelo vs Angulo a ppv? Nothing like beating up an old man to make you fell like you’re somebody, right!

Posted February 11, 2014 2:44 pm

Titopa

PEEJ – He “ducked” NO ONE! Remember, first off, Martinez is THEE MIDDLEWEIGHT champ, he beat the man who beat the man. Secondly, he’s not a young pup, at this point of his career (before the Chavez fight) he was looking to get a nice check for a tough fight, is there anything wrong with that? He wanted the reward to be worth the risk, that’s nothing new. Chavez (due to his popularity) was a smart fight, it was going to be tough (at it was), he had the opportunity to take down the son of a legend who many felt was a pampered brat, who would pass that up?

Posted February 11, 2014 2:41 pm

SUPER HUGE Martinez fan, but this is a dangerous fight…he’s gonna have this look (picture) after the first round LOL

Posted February 11, 2014 2:33 pm

Pirog wasn’t injured when he was calling out Martinez. He actually got injured when he was training for GGG. And Martinez wasn’t 154. He was the Middleweight Champ when Ward said he would meet him at a catch weight.

Posted February 11, 2014 2:30 pm

blackbert

Golovkin said “We’ll fight anyone from 154-175,” except Ward and now Lara. He turned both fights down; he can’t use the excuse of no one wants to fight him anymore. Lara isn’t good enough for GGG, but Nishoda is? Andy Lee is? GGG is a first class ducking hype job continually fighting tomato cans. GGG = 3X the ducking ability. And after seeing him against Ouma, who was well over the hill and landied continuous shots on him, there’s no way he beats Lara. And where did all this sudden power come from. If you wonder why I ask that question just go look at the Ouma fight. According to Rosado his gloves are loaded via padding removal, and he warned Stevenson about it. How you gonna call out Floyd who is two division below you and fights for a different network, but claim that you can’t fight Lara because he with a different network, he’s in a division below yours, nobody knows who Lara is, etc. He’s using every excuse in the book to duck Lara. Everybody is ducking Lara, Cotto, Floyd, Canelo, and now Golovkin.

Posted February 11, 2014 2:27 pm

A Martinez-GGG fight would be great for the division and be PPV-worthy. Both are top level guys who don’t avoid hard fights but they are at different periods in their respective careers. I expect GGG will pull out the KO victory but it won’t be an easy match.

Posted February 11, 2014 2:03 pm

He ducked Pilrog (I think that is his name), ducked Quillen, heck he ducked anybody with a title except for Chavez Jr who isn’t that good. Was actually just was given his belt by the crooks at WBC. Martinez is very overrated and has mainly only called out Floyd and Pac and has ignored a challenge by Ward with meeting at a catch weight. Saying he was too small yet wants to call out welters.

Martinez, if fit beats Cotto easily imo. Against Golovin he would have to be in imperious form, he has the skills to upset Golovin , but having said that my pick is Golovin by a wide UD or late stoppage.

Yes of course it it ! How is it not? Name a fighter Martinez has ducked? Unlike quillien and I agree with you about him being over rated but he has been the best middleweight for the past 5-6 years before he injured his knee in the Chavez fight he was a force to be reckoned with. He is past his best and golovkin is a step to far for him now. But I be the fights him unlike every other top fighter in the division . Oh and Martinez destroys quillien in my opinion

Posted February 11, 2014 1:40 pm

So mentioning someones name is showing interest? Quillen has already said he would be willing to fight GGG. Only problem is the networks they fight for.

Good to see Martinez is a man of his word and looks like he’ll follow through with the late 2014 Golovkin fight.

That being said, I think Cotto is going to give this fight a good go. Martinez has been looking somewhat faded lately and he’s had a relatively long layoff. Cotto is good at cutting off fleet-footed fighters, so Martinez will have to trade a little.
That being said, Martinez has incredible cardio, so if he forces Cotto to work hard right from the opening bell, Cotto may struggle to keep up and fade by the middle to late rounds, allowing Martinez to pursue for a stoppage win.
