Anonymous – Yes my friend, that is true. Life is full of people who don’t wish to be a good sport or act humble or accept they mabey are wrong in something. Yes I have had my battles with people like that many times in my life, but the older I get (and I’m not an old man, but young and enough good educated) I feel like itys not worth using positive energy on people who can’t see more then there eyes reach. I turn the other cheek and leave them there with there bad temrament or bad ignorance, not my problem and not my loss.

Thanks again for your kind concern and advice ;-)

Anonymous – Where was Mike McCallum in 96′ and 97′ when Calzaghe hit the top? Eubank and Collins were legit targets, as they were the best Super Middles at the time. Maybe Benn too, as he was still a big name even though faded.

@Anonymous – WRONG there- Hopkins ducked Calzaghe TWICE. Thomas Tate, Frank Liles, Steve Collins and Tarick Salmaci all pulled out with ”injuries”, Sven Ottke serially ducked Calzaghe, William Joppy turned down a fight. Glenn Johnson got himself beat by Omar Shieka who got the shot at Calzaghe instead of him. So, TOTALLY WRONG.

Joe Calzaghe spent years calling out Jones, Toney, Nunn BUT, he did not dare call out Mike McCallum!
Joe also called out Eubank and Collins.
He used all these names to try and float his career.
But when Froch who was number 1 contender called him out Joe turned a DEAF’UN.
This has always been the case in boxing.
Look at Golovkin calling out everyone. Look at Kovalev calling out everyone.
Truth is since day 1 the top boxers in the sport want to protect their position and want those that challenge them to EARN their shots…. This happens in every single form of life.
Once people get to the top, they invariably pull the ladder up after them to protect their lofty positions….
Fact of life mate.

” I also think its a shame Calzaghe never had more big fights earlier in his career, though that was due to his hand injuries and various fighters either ducking him or pulling out injured.”

Sorry Assyrian… Truth is Joe pulled out of numerous scheduled fights. That’s why he only fought so sporadically for many years as champ. Ask his promoter and you will find Joe was known as SICK NOTE in the game.

All 3 fights were close enough to merit a rematch and all 3 men learned more from fighting Joe than he did them and were confident they would win a rematch but Joe left his phone off the hook for all 3 hiding under his duvet until they ran out of credit.

Great comments, my man. I have no issue with people who think Joe won. It was a close fight.
I predicted Joe would win with ease before the fight and was surprised how tentative he was in the first half of the fight. I think it was nip and tuck, it was not a great spectacle, but I think you will agree that Hopkin’s horrible comments made a good, trade fight into a MUST-SEE spectacular and helped to GROW the Calzaghe image.

Now, I will put the record straight. I am NOT a fan of Hopkins in the slightest. I find watching most of his fights, especially his M’W reign as a cure for insomnia, but I cannot stand the hypocrisy of some fans who want to shout down someone else who has a differing viewpoint and I am sorry, but whenever Calzaghe raises it’s head we have people on here who are ready to do anyone who doesn’t worship him in with pick axes, but they feel they can run other fighters down with impunity.

The hypoccrisy stinks!

Hopkins is a salesman, promoter, boxer and he learned a long time ago that to make money in this sport you need to sell yourself. He told Ring Magazine in the good old days that he wanted to make the cover and they told him keep winning and one day you will. But he didn’t want to wait and vowed once he got his foot in the door he would keep it wedged there, no matter what. This is why he took on Don King and won.
He did the worst thing you can do by trampling the PR flag and got the whole of PR fired up against him and probably stirred up Trinidad, who he schooled.
Calzaghe being a Brit, he thought he could stir up Joe and get maximum exposure for this fight and he did with his abhorrent comments. but, this time they backfired and the judges were in no mood to give him any close rounds of which there were many.
racism is disgusting, no matter what excuse, but Hopkins will do anything to sell his fights.
why do you think he now calls himself Alien? the man is 48/49 and knows he needs to stay relevant so he will do anything to sell his fights.
Schumenov is next IMHO this is a very, very tough fight for Hopkins- if Schumenov can land he can make it life and death for him.
I would not be surprised if Hopkins comes out with another crass comment which will peak more interest in this fight. Not surprised at all!

Great discussion. We know all about Minter v Hagler, and anyone who tries to be reasonably fair-minded was shocked by the behaviour of some people at Minter-Hagler. I was rooting for Hagler that night in 1980 and I’m white…As for Calzaghe-Hopkins, I thought Joe won narrowly and I still think that. I had Bernard ahead after the first three rounds , but felt Calzaghe started to turn it around after that. Joe always had great workrate, stamina and an underrated ability to adapt…

SWEDISH BOXING FAN
If you ever mention even a breath on Calzaghe that is not hero worshipping or boot licking the morons on here will try and lynch you. They do not possess an objective brain cell in their heads.
Yet, they will write pages and pages to slate boxers like Mayweather, Froch and Hopkins some of which is libellous but without a care and calling them racist, which is unfounded at best and libellous at worst. Yes, Calzaghe fans are the most objective fans in the world, not.

You, sir are objective, yet they call you all the names under the sun!

Ttust me, this is how bullies and real scumbags act. You see them in the work place, out on the terraces and many other places, ganging together to shout down anyone with a differing viewpoint and even when in your case you rightly detail evidence, such as Joe’s dad not only screaming but swearing at him between rounds for the last several and they call YOU a liar.

A decent poster in TARK has been vilified and threatened by people on here because he dare utter a differing opinion and they call themselves debaters. No, they are shouters and bullies and you sir, should just ignore them, but never let them bully you into keeping your opinions to yourself.

Everyone has one and they are R… soles!

@Swedish Boxing Fan, Sorry my man, but youre delusional. You know damn well Hopkins lost that fight. All he did all fight long was try and fail to break Calzaghes rhythm, cry fake fouls, back off, try to grab and occasionally lunge forward crudely. Calzaghe was having so much fun in there he even simulated butt-f..king Hopkins! lol

Posted March 14, 2014 11:52 am

Lol, Its hilarious reading Hopkins nuthuggers trying to rewrite history. Anyone who could see straight would see Calzaghe outlanding Hopkins consistently. This fight wasnt even close, as others have said Byrd was a paid for judge. Hopkins was beat by a better fighter, one who had the style to beat him, as for slappy punches, well, Calzaghe put Eubank down with those ”slaps” and has a good stoppage ratio. Hey, maybe we shouldnt count punches landed by Ray Leonard, Pernell Whittaker, Willlie Pep and PBF either eh? Morons! Also, using RACISM to sell a fight is stupid! Because Minter did it, its ok for Hopkins to do it?? Wheres the logic there? Duhh.

Just read Swedish Boxing Fans breakdown of Hopkins vs Calzaghe.
Spot on mate.

Ps I cannot stand Hopkins as he is a man who would rather cheat to win than win a clean fight.
I think his only clean fight he has had recently was vs Pascal and before that vs Tarver. He cheated vs Winky Wright, Jermain Taylor, in most of his MW fights and you can google him on YouTube showing up you how you can cheat on the refs blindside and all other manners of how to cheat in a boxing ring.

Can’t stand Hookins, but can’t stand people making up lies with no basis to back it up.

slappy’s punches had zero, absolutely no weight on them and most should not have counted. even slappy’s dad was screaming at him between rounds, swearing at him that he was blowing it. Hopkins corner had Freddie Roach in it and they were ,cool and calm, believing they had the title in the bag. but, what went again Hopkins is the crazy fact that he wants to win all his fights dirty. look at how he busted up WINKY Wright with butts all night long. I believe if he hadn’t shown out in 2 of those rounds the judges may’ve been more favourable to him. It was a waiver decision.

Lou Reed, you freakin moron
Bernard Hopkins was drumming up business for this fight with .calzaghe like he did with Trinidad.

with Trinidad he produced a PR flag and stamped all over it! it made headline news and the fight was a sellout.

forward wind to Calzaghe….Now read this very carefully.
in 1980 Alan Minter of UK defending his world MW title vs Marvin Hagler said
“NO BLACK MAN IS GOING TO TAKE MY TITLE!”

Unfortunately for him he was battered into 3rd round cut eye stoppage defeat and all the racist Brits drunk on lager rioted and tried to lynch the victorious Hagler and his entourage.

Hopkins used this as a selling point for the fight and his sound byte went round this world

“NO WHITE GUY IS GOING TO TAKE MY TITLE!”

Why don’t you fat, lazy slobs do your homework and find out the reasons why people say and do certain things.

Hopkins vs Calzaghe became the must-see fight.

In the mid 80s Larry Holmes was sick to death of all the comparisons to Rocky Marciano when he defended his newly acquired IBF belt vs Mike Spinks as he approached his 49-0 record he was angry that no one gave him his props and said that Rocky Marciano wasn’t fit to, “carry my jockstrap!”

Right there HOLMES almost guaranteed he would win no decision on the scorecards and he lost 2 hotly disputed decisions to Spinks and retired for 3 years!

All these plastic so-called boxing fans should go back to watching football, playing darts, drinking beer and playing with yourselves. You know next to shiznit about boxing.

I don’t think Hopkins beat Calzaghe. People refuse to give Calzaghe credit because they don’t like his punching style, but he was landing punches all night.

I think if Hopkins hadn’t continuously broken Calzaghes rhythm by feigning and exaggerating imjury, then it wouldn’t have been half as close as it seemed.

Credit to Hopkins though, he is phenominal for his age.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. LionKing)

Calzaghe would’ve boxed Froch’s ears off and made him look bad. Froch has average defensive skills, throws wide, looping punches and is not an outstanding boxer. Joe C would’ve simply outworked and outboxed him — just like he did to Hopkins and Jones Jr.

TARK

Calzaghe is wasy overrated… Ward would shut him out… Froch would have beaten him in a blockbuster slugfest.

But I had him beating Hopkins… I have Hopkins as the greatest middleweight of all time—depending on what happens with Gennady Golovkin and what he does with his career.

Calzaghe was the aggressor for most of the fight and landed the better punches. Hopkins looked overly muscled and slow.. He didn’t look right to me.. JC was outboxed by Hopkins in a few rounds — but he was too young and fast for B-Hop for the most part. He did better in 7 rounds — that makes him the winner for certain.

Swedish@Trinidad looked two weight classes smaller against Hopkins and the Calzaghe knockdown was a push. It was a good shot, but then he pushed Calzaghe down. I tried to watch the fight the other day, but it is so damn boring i quit watching it after 2 rounds. The Trinidad fight i watched and Hopkins dominated 100% but like i said, Trinidad was too small. Even in his own weight class he was a long-limbed tall fighter.

Swedish Boxing Fan

Clearly there are many people here who can’t have watched the Hopkins vs. Calzaghe fight well enough times to see what happened with an analysing eye.
Many people here have a lot of trash and very negative talk about Bernard Hopkins in general and that corrupts your analysing view of scoring the fight.

I have watched the fight so many times and after so many times of writing down all what happened, its a false result HBO gave us all. It can’t be denied and there are some good boxing knowing people her on eastsideboxing who have made statement like mine or better analysis that proves the fight view round after round as I have done.

ESPN, Associated Press and Yahoo Sports experts all scored the fight 114-113 for Hopkins. That is fact, look it up for your self and see.

1# HBO Compubox failed to show right punch stat as that counter failed to recognise many of Hopkins inside body shots at Calzaghe.

2# Joe Calzaghe was knocked down in 1st round and was for the first 3 rounds very up beaten, something Calzaghe have not been in many times of his career

3# Calzaghe missed a lot of punches at same time Hopkins landed counter punches at a stunned Calzaghe.

4# Hopkins dominated all inside fight moments landing punches while Calzaghe had to struggle with missing punches because Hopkins right hand found him often.

5# Hopkins landed most power punches in the fight and his single right hand punch almost at will tricked Calzaghe and landed.

6# Calzaghe didn’t look good against Hopkins until the 3 last rounds of the fight when Hopkins started to step down his pace.

7# Calzaghe got away twice with landing 2 clear low blow punches and was not even warned, would you guys like to take a southpaw left punch to your nuts? Now you wouldn’t.

8# In the end of the fight Enzo Calzaghe, Joes father and trainer did not have his own son as the winner after 12 rounds of boxing and had repeatedly told Joe that threw the 3 final rounds. Joe needed to stop Hopkins according to his analysis to secure a victory.

9# After 12th and final round is over and after Joe have jumped up and down, there is no denying that you can see in his eyes and face that he don’t believe he have done that extra to win the fight and Joes father is even more down to believe it.

10# Freddie Roach, Carl Froch and Mike Tyson who watched the fight all had Hopkins as the winner but they still gave Calzaghe credit!
11# In those moments Joe Calzaghe have talked about his fight with Bernard Hopkins, he holds back a lot of his view on the fight because he is a great fighter and he don’t feel inside he won that fight and you can both feel that in his words and his body expression. He won, yes great for him but the inner feeling will not go away that easy.

12# Bernard Hopkins and Golden Boy Promotions where eager to make a re-match happening with Calzaghe vs. Hopkins and a lucrative offer was made for Calzaghe to take the fight but Calzaghe wanted to fight Roy Jones Jr (who was not longer ranked high by the major organisations and years from his best performance).

13# After Calzaghe got his wish to fight and defeated Roy Jones jr, he was again up for discussions and negotiations to fight Hopkins again but Calzaghe went away in silence and then all of a sudden retired, despite being 7 years younger and in his physical prime! Wouldn’t a rematch have settled things better for both men? Most people believe so to settle it all.

14# To say that Hopkins “only” fights smaller men is far from a real statement. Joe Calzaghe, Kelly Pavlik, Jean Pascal, Karo Murat, Winky Wright etc are all fighters from same natural body physical structure and came from same weight divisions. Hopkins spent from 1991-2005 his career as a middleweight fighter! He then jumped 2 weight classes to Light heavyweight because there where lucrative fights there to be made for him at the time and fighting any of these men he did was not picking smaller men who could just as him adapt to a new weight class and speaking of that, Hopkins fought his prime career 1 division lower then Calzaghe and Pascal and Murat! So how can we say he fought smaller men then? Pavlik is even bigger then Hopkins in height and reach and he was even more considered a super middleweight or light heavyweight material then Hopkins ever was.

15# Sure you can say that fighting Oscar De La Hoya was a lower “pick”, but then again, De La Hoya wanted to try and fight at middleweight and even captured the WBO world middleweight title and Hopkins wanted that title belt what-so-ever so fighting De La Hoya was his biggest money offer ever made + the WBO belt and who wouldn’t? NO champ had ever had all 4 world title belts at same time before and would be a CLEAN division.

The Felix Trinidad fight could also be said ALMOST but the fact is that Trinidad was outgrowing his light middleweight class and had the physical tools and power to fight at middleweight and knocking out the bigger and stronger William Joppy for his WBA world title belt proved more then well that he belonged as a middleweight and when Hopkins fought him, Trinidad was a 3-1 favourite to win so again, Hopkins can’t be blamed for anything of that talk.

Hopkins was and always will be very good at nullifying sluggers , boxer-punchers, stand up style boxers and slow to average tempo fighters. What Hopkins (and James Toney) could never do, is deal with the combination of handspeed, ring mobility, lateral movement, super high workrate and punch output and high levels of stamina. Joe Calzaghe and a prime Roy Jones simply had exactly the right styles to beat fighters like Hopkins and Toney, who had excellent ”old school’ skills, but were never very fast, agile or mobile of hand, body and foot. Speed (and punch output) kills when it comes to Hopkins and Toney.

Those people trying to make excuses for Bhop getting tanked by Joe Calzaghe are even more boring than BHOP’s fights, give it up folks. Your hero lost that one fair and square. Look, he had his hometown Ref, his hometown Judges, he was fighting at Home, he was fighting at His best Weight (after ducking Calzaghe twice when a Middle), he still lost it, and lost clear.

@Walrus & Swedish Boxing—, keep dreaming. Hopkins didnt do squat against Calzaghe after the 3rd round. And even the ”knockdown” was Calzaghe getting caught square and then pushed over. He wasnt even close to being hurt, and more than Ali was when he went down against Wepner. Hopkins did not have a ”bad night” he just met a fighter who worked out his ugly, messing, neutralizing style, beat him to the punch, outmanouvered him, landed WAY MORE PUNCHES than him and outsmarted him. Hopkins only got a splid descision loss because one of the judges was in his pocket, that fight was no closer than Lewis-Holyfield 1 or Burns-Beltran. lol

Hopkins won a real title, lost it to Calzaghe (in a fair decision), won it back against Pascal, and lost it big against Dawson (he would’ve lost in the first Dawson fight had it not been for the so-called injury he incurred while fouling Dawson). All wins were major achievements for someone over 40 or any age. His “world” titles since then are at least one tier below actual world titles. Although it is still impressive that he’s winning in his 40s against good opposition, it is not the same as regaining the world title. Shumenov represents the least threat among current belt holders and that is the real reason for this bout. Hopkins is rightfully a legend — but perspective is also useful.

Belt Holder – Okey so you don’t take me seriusly, sorry to hear but please talk for your own sake on that instead of making up more people to be “on” your oppinion. So I respect your oppinion as you have right to that oppinion.

However, I am mostly a neutral boxing fan who loves good fights and great boxers and the fact is proven that Bernard Hopkins is an active All-time-great legend in proffesional boxing and he have earned his legend status in the ring.
And the fact that a 49 year old man is still on top level in PRO boxing and schooling younger fighters is something that have never before happend and that man, Hopkins is also a recognised world champion defender makes it even more astonishing. No other boxer who have accomplished all this (!). And to say that his fight with Beibut Shumenov for the unified IBF/WBA(IBA world championship is today a nice fight.
I mean hi is in the right direction to unify the world titles so if he defeats him, then Hopkins is the only one left for Adonis Stevenson (WBC/Lineal) and Sergey Kovalev (WBO). How can that be bad if Hopkins takes anotyher world title belt in a unification?
I like Adonis Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev as well as they are great fighters now and I hope they will fight each-other to unify BUT as for now, Adonis don’t want that fight (!). SO whats wrong with enjoying Bernard Hopkins fighting 1 of the 4 world light heavyweight champions?

Bernard Hopkins’s legacy is already WELL secured and will be remembered threw the ages. 11 years of record reign as the undisputed middleweight champion of the world with a record of 20 world title defences. The first and only man so far to conquer all 4 major world title belts (WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO) and the Lineal crown and have them all at same time.

Hopkins became world light heavyweight champion at age 41 and then he regained the world heavyweight title at a record age of 46 and is still great. At age 48 Bernard Hopkins again conqers the world light heavyweight title by out-boxing hard hitter Tavoris Cloud.

Over the years having in an impressive way defeated over 15 recognised world champions – Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Roy Jones Jr, Antonio Tarver, Glen Johnson, Ronald “Winky” Wright, Jean Pascal, Tavoris Cloud, William Joppy, Kelly Pavlik, Keith Holmes, Lupe Aquino, John David Jackson, Simon Brown & Carl Daniels along with numerous top contenders including Howard Eastman, Enrique Ornelas, Robert Allen x2, Segundo Mercado, Wayne Powell, Antwun Echols x2, Andrew Council, Karo Murat and many more good opponents so Bernard Hopkins have one of the most impressive victory records of all times and will be very remembered for all those fights.

The same can be said with his 6 losses on his record and only 2 of them are real losses (1st Roy Jones Jr fight and 2nd Chad Dawson fight), the rest where fights his opponents (Jermain Taylor x2, Joe Calzaghe among) got away with some gift like decisions. Not at all have any opponent to date mastered him in any way in the ring. Hard to master a fighter who have learned to master the skill of fast fight style and tempo adapting.
Bernard Hopkins is a hard and one of the very most difficult boxer ever to fight in the ring.

badger – Well I inever fought PRo but yes I have boxed and still doo, but that is not the point here. Sure Hopkins mabey leaned some round to Joe Cortez but the fact that Calzaghe hit Hopkins with low blowes twice was unnecessary and Calzaghe himself is not so much better then Hopkins in some fights Im afraid. Joe Calzaghe is a smart boxer and have skills but as well he have done his chare of dirty fighting in his career at some point so even if Hopkins have done some tricks more, Calzaghe have done that himself just less.

Joe Calzaghe had more then a noise cut, his face was more swollen and Hopkins face came clean after the fight. Hopkins dominated as on body shots and power punches.

I didnt even mention the fact that joe got an ugly decision against hopkins I truly believe hopkins had a bad night any other night joe would have been hurt. Joe got dropped and many experts had him losing that fight I might have gave him the nod only because hopkins didn’t fight his best fight but even then the fight was to close to call.

This is what im talking about. You should already know the answer to that question tony.hopkins looked great in his next fight against pavlik joe beat roy that same month hopkins called him out it was the right time for the rematch thats what all great fighters do they give rematches or even trilogies or 4 or5 times whatever it takes but joe wanted know part of hopkins we saw against kelly.

Sad to see all these haters on here. Hopkin is the such a special fighter deserves everything he has because he earned it. I realy believe people hate on Hopkins just because they are calzaghe fan’s and the know how much grsater Hopkins is than joe. Joe’s win was ugly and wanted no part of a rematch .then thres all this talk of what a bad roll model hops is well joes the one with coke habit. I hope Hopkins gets his face smashed in over 12 rounds the racist cheating prick. He’s not a man to look up to, and he’s certainly not a good boxer, and never has been. Boxing will be better off without him when he’s finally gone. Hopkins will NEVER fight Kovalev because he’d get hammered and the whole world knows it.

Posted March 12, 2014 9:34 pm

Swede – No one can take your comments seriously. You continually show absolute idol worship to Hopkins on all threads. Even trying to convince people that a victory against Shumenov is some sort of achievement when Stevenson and Kovalev are sitting at No. 1&2 of the LHW division. Your bias recap of the Hopkins vs Calzaghe fight are laughable and the fact remains that Calzaghe won.

Peej – You can make up fictional fights in history all you like (prime vs prime) but the facts are for all to see, Calzaghe has a ‘W’ over Hopkins and RJJ. Try watching boxers as athletes and not colours it will free your mind.

sure swede. I think we saw a different match. Hop brought his ref cortes who should have deducted points for excessive holding on Hopkins. Then warned or deducted a point from joe for low blows. that match was not even close. You obviously never boxed. Getting a cut on your nose does not mean you lost.

Calzaghe was a solid fighter where as Hopkins would pull little fighters from lesser weights to fight him. Hopkins would resort to dirty fighting when he’s in trouble.

Ah again the Bernard Hopkins vs. Joe Calzaghe fight from 2008. It is a very close call and both fighters had to adopt to fight an opponent who as well had smart ring adaption skills but if we look at the fight again and again like I and probably lot of people have done you can in a “closer and deeper look” perspective see many inside fighting hits that Hopkins so clear dominated almost all times threw 12 rounds.

HBO Compubox have failed in many fights over the years and this fight was very wrong calculated in punch hits to notice in first aspect of the fight rersult.
And there are also another fact that I believe the scoring judges took a lot effect on the crowd audience as many had come all the way from Wales to support Joe Calzaghe and simply did not see the inside hits Hopkins delivered because they followed the strong Calzaghe Crowd who reacted to evrey move he made in the fight!.

Hopkins knocked Calzaghe down in 1st round to start with Also is that Calzaghe was more busted up in his face then Hopkins was in the end of the fight.
Joe Calzaghe took lots of good right hand punches from Hopkins while Calzaghe more landed soft-fast punches and in near end rounds landed fast flurries in hope to steal the round, more like slap punches.

I don’t say Calzaghe fought bad because he is a talented fighter and that night he proved to be one of the most difficult opponents Hopkins fought.

But that night, Bernard Hopkins was a man he did not defeat in the end and even Joe Calzaghe’s father and trainer told, even scremed to Joe several times in the late fight that he felt Joe was loosing the fight, HIS OWN FATHER and TRAINER did not see him win in the end and even when Joe have stopped jumping you can clearly see in his eyes and face that he don’t believe himself that he have won the fight.
While in Hopkins corner there is no misstaken that they are well secured that Hopkins have won with out doubts.

Well in the end Hopkins got a bit dissapointed only 114-113 by one judge.
I have after watched the entire fight many times now, I have the 12 rounds scores 115-112 for Bernard Hopkins.

More quality observations like from Associated Press, ESPN and Yahoo Sports all scored the bout 114-113 for Bernard Hopkins.
The famous boxing trainer Freddie Roach had same scores in favour for Hopkins.
Super middleweight world champion Carl Froch commented “Believe it or not Bernard Hopkins isn’t that well liked in America, he didn’t seem to get the nod with the hometown decision, and Calzaghe he won by split decision and one of the judges had Hopkins win it and I think Hopkins won”.

Legend and former 2-time world heavyweight champion “Iron” Mike Tyson was there and watched the fight and he commented ” It was a good fight, I thought Bernard won”.

Calzaghe’s was very unrated, he had so many way of fighting, that threw his fighter off, the timing switch with jr jones was amazing he gave jr the same low left hand back keeping it low and popping it’s back in Roy face off and on threw jones off, and got the scoring jab back. Then he switch back to ruffle man style a slugger, Roy’s lost that fight clearly. He also upset Hopkins too. But calzaghe retired on top, and the media never game him credit.

But no doubt Bhop will fight on until he does get a hiding. Stevenson/Kov winner against Hops/Shum winner for all 4 belts wud b good 4 the division. Kov will emerge the top dog.

Hopkins may get hurt if he fights Kovalev. Hope he retires after outpointing Shumenov.

Posted March 12, 2014 5:58 pm

Popkins

A lot of Americans think Calzaghe’s career began when he annihilated Jeff Lacy. In actual fact Joe had already beaten a string of solid super middleweights: Eubank, Reid, Woodhall, Brewer, Mitchell, Sheika. At the point Calzaghe beat them these opponents were good enough to have created their own “super 6″. I’d hav given them a good chance of beating middleweight Abraham, novice Dirrell, faded Kessler, old Johnson (Sheika beat a prime Johnson). Froch wud hav struggled with them. A 97 Eubank would hav given Ward a tougher fight than Carl did. Show time created a lot of hype with the super 6 which greatly enhanced Ward and Froch’s reputations. Calzaghe wasn’t given that sort of golden ticket. He is very underrated In my opinion.

No need to watch this fight, I already know how it’s gonna go. B-Hop will circle right or left, throw a left right left, followed by his head or shoulder and hold until the ref breaks them up. B-Hop will hit the others hip or leg on the other side of the ref until the break. This will go on for 12 rounds, B-Hop 12 UD. There you have it, save your money.

Joe did not whip Hopkins, the only man on the canvas was Joe. He missed every punch he threw, except for the low blows. The clean effective punches were landed by Bhop. Joe got a gift decision. Joe did beat the sheet out of Roy Jones though.

JC is underrated in the US. The man was a great boxer.

Posted March 12, 2014 4:48 pm

Exiled Yank

Most Americans though Lacy would blast through Joe C because they had not idea who JC was. All anyone needed to do was watch a couple of his fights and they would know JC would win. Lacy had overrated power, he was slow, and walked straight forward. He got the Tyson tag for all the wrong reasons and the press and public bought into it. Put a plodding slugger in front of a smart, adaptable boxer, and the boxer wins 9 times out of ten. It was a no brainer. Now JC v BH was much harder to pick because they have high boxing IQ’s, tons of championship experience, and very similar styles, not to mention they both can adapt. That fight was going to be close from the beginning and the score cards proved it.

“Calzaghe also needed help from the ref to stop Mitchell.”

That’s the same Byron Mitchell who was falling around like a drunk man in the second round, fell into the ropes in the corner, just as Joe was stepping into to finish him off.

The same Roy Jones who said “I’m in the best shape in five years” who then got utterly destroyed by Joe. In fact the fight should of been stopped at round 7 because after that the fight was a painful massacre for Roy. Who then after the fight said “Joe slaps VERY HARD!”

Another fact, Joe went to the USA years before that fight, went to Roy’s house (while he was still in his prime) and asked him to fight him, and Roy ducked him!

Joe tried everything to get Hopkins the racist in the ring years before they fought and Hopkins ducked him too! So get your facts right PEEJ you worm!!

FACTS not hypothetical guesses are what counts in boxing nothing else.

FACT – Joe kicked Roy’s ass big time and credit to Roy he’s always been man enough to admit it and credits Joe as a truly great fighter. They are friends to this very day. Unlike his pathetic fans, the very opposite of Roy, who refuse to give Joe ANY credit for his terrific career. Unbeaten in 46 fights against many world champions and top class fighters!

Go count them up on BoxRec.

Roy is an all time great, I’m a huge fan of his, he respects his kind, his fellow fighters, but his fans are the very opposite of him, cowardly gutless worms who sit behind a computer slagging fighters off, particularly if they aren’t from the USA. Pathetic!

As for Hopkins ‘I ain’t gonna lose to no white boy” well he did, fair and square, he tried every pathetic cheating trick in the book as usual and still lost. And he did the same to Dawson in their first fight, crying foul to try and win by any means possible. Hopkins is a joke, an embarrassment to boxing, a spoiler, not a great fighter at all, his so called fights are terrible to watch, and now as a deluded old man he needs Steve Smoger to help him win. Pathetic. By try telling that to an American, they won’t listen because they don’t want to hear it. Pathetic!

This is US fighters and it’s fans … “If it’s cheating, and we can get away with it, great go for it!” Pathetic.

Next it will be, feather-fisted headbutt Ward would of beaten Joe, if we can’t win with facts, we’ll try to win with guess work. That’s US fight fans for ya.

Billy@ so did several other boxers, but Robison’s style wasn’t based on an overprotective defense, like it was the style in those days to fight more openly. No Mayweather style had yet born. So many fighters had losses and then rematches.

I’m pulling for Shumenov. Hopkins has been a great one, but he has become more of a publicist/promoter, which I guess works for him some how, but he should have just concentrated on being a fighter. Reminds me of the phony wrestling organizations when he comes out as an alien. Dilutes the sport of boxing. I could never see Sugar Ray Robinson, Hagler, Duran and other greats doing that kind of stuff.
