Old Coot

I meant to say- Given the very unlikely chance that he was going to KO Alvarez, Weeks did right.

Old Coot

I know Angulo could have continued but I think given the damage he was taking and and how he was losing on points, and the very unlikelyhood that he was NOT going to KO Canelo, Weeks was right to stop it… I remember looking at Angulo’s mug and thinking about how that sort of damage nearly killed Mago, who will likely be an invalid now!

Waddya expect from a parasite?

Gray’s got the beat. Boxtradamus, as usual, just wants attention. In addition, he has no respect for human life. But I can’t say I’m surprised.

GOOD thing Weeks wasn’t reffing the Mickey Bey Fight where the guy was getting SPANKED every round and then stopped Bey at the end. We need MEN reffing Fights not SISSIES.

its kind of weird everyone is saying the fight was fixed because when i watched it i was saying to my bro that angulo was just arm punching – so i totally get why people are saying it was fixed – the author should remember that really it should be the corner that pulls the fighter who has lost every round took a complete beating and with no chance of winning out – the ref is there to make sure no one gets really hurt because lets face it fighters are the last ones to know when they have had enough!!!!!!

the stoppage was a good one, no doubt. angulo has a family and needs to retire now. that was a brutal beating. To those who think the article title is “illiterate” ….hahahhahaha. morons, it’s perfect english

Punching bag is only allowed in the gym, not in the ring.

Fight Aficionado

Alot of gripes about a premature stoppage but there’s a cumulative effect of shots that aren’t always apparent. Angulo wasn’t going to win and he got blasted many times. Remember what happened to Mago guys. He was never dropped and even did his post-fight interview.

Posted March 14, 2014 12:54 pm

Livershot

Weeks saw a man that had taken too many hard shots. It’s one thing to watch on tv or even be ring side. Only he knows what he sees and hears in the ring. Angulo sad to say may have lost this fight before he climbed into the ring. The shots he took from Kirkland where massive. The accurate shots he took from Lara fractured his eye socket. Sometimes fighters as brave as they are get the fight beaten out of them. Meldrick Taylor comes to mind. After that Chavez fight he was never the same. Angulo should have to be cleared before being allowed to fight again. Weeks made good call.

I would like to see Canelo/Lara at 154. I would probably lean towards Lara via SD, if no weight deals are made in the day of the fight.

Angulo was the same “slug” v. Lara who he was on track to TKO before that hematoma blew-up on his face. IMO, a rematch between Lara and Angulo would unfold in almost the same fashion. conversely, while Angulo has demonstrated that he is on Lara’s level, Canelo made defeating Angulo look relatively easy. providing a glaring contrast between his own elite fighting ability and Angulo’s inferior plodding style. something that Lara didn’t come near doing v. the same headfirst, plodding, “slug”.

I understand Joseph’s point of when a fight gets stopped like that, we miss the opportunity to see the drama unfold. For instance, what if Coralles/Costillo got stopped? Well we would have lost the chance at seeing Coralles turn the fight around for the win. This is true, but we may have also got to see both fighters continue to fight at the top of their game, instead of seeing them as shells of their former selves in the remainder of their fights… I love watching the drama unfold in a fight as much as anyone, but I don’t care to see the results when a fighter takes one punch too many…

Posted March 14, 2014 10:57 am

Tomato Can

To me it all comes down to how much punishment you’re willing to see a fighter take in order to give then a chance to see him land a fight changing punch of his own. In Angulo’s case, he wasn’t landing enough punches, and what he did land did have much on them…. So even though the fight was approaching the territory where Alvarez’s stamina questions where going to be answered, The more important question to me was how many more punches would it take to put Angulo in a coma. At that point it’s time to stop the fight, IMO.

Posted March 14, 2014 10:46 am

Matador

I agree the fight should have been stopped, and haters are making a deal of nothing. Angulo’s trainer said he’d stop it if Canelo landed another combination. Since he was landing them all night, I can’t imagine the fight lasting more than a few seconds after Weeks did stop it.

The title is stupid. That’s all.

“Canelo LOOKS MORE fatigued from punching him than Angulo IS from taking the punches.”

Yeah, right. Canelo just finished almost taking Angulo’s head off with one punch and he looks fatigued. LOL! For ten rounds Canelo was giving Angulo a beatdown. And all of a sudden Angulo was going to come back? With what?

“Give the guy a chance until it looks as IF he can’t handle it at least.”

Weeks did. For almost 10 full rounds. Angulo hadn’t been “handling it” since the opening bell. Suffering it, yes. Handling it, no. Big difference. Canelo wasn’t going to gas out. He was in total control of the fight, hurting Angulo with almost every punch he threw.

Angulo: “That was my plan. I was going to let him beat the crap out of me for 10 rounds, then knock him out. Somehow…”

LMAO! Oh Sissydamus, you are one tall pile of kudu dung. Angulo will probably be pissing blood for the next two weeks.

CORRECTION. ..Canelo LOOKS MORE fatigued from punching him than Angulo IS from taking the punches. .

Posted March 14, 2014 2:48 am

Boxtradamus

Just LOOK at the pic. Canelo looks fatigued from punching him than Angulo IS from taking the punches. He’s looking right into Canelo’s eyes and sees him tiring. Angulo is charging back at him and is energized by Canelo’s fatigue.

Posted March 14, 2014 2:47 am

Boxtradamus

I feel that it was a SISSYFIED stoppage. IF the guy was SO hurt then
why was he complaining about the stoppage?? He was never even WOBBLED let alone knocked down. His plan was to let Canelo punch himself out and then feast on his NON energetic carcass. Weeks is TOO SOFT in the heart. He needs to go Ref a tennis match….Angulo wasn’t on the ropes. He wasn’t wobbled. He wasn’t dropped. He wasn’t WINCING from the punches. He was taking a licking and kept on ticking. Its Boxing. Punishment gets handed out sometimes. Just because YOU feel in your SISSYFIED heart that YOU can’t handle it doesn’t mean that the next man can’t. Give the guy a chance until it looks as IF he can’t handle it at least.

Very good stoppage, I thought after 6 angulo knew Canelo wasn’t slowing down as usual. Canelo might have turned the fitness corner

I thought Weeks made a good stoppage. Even Virgil Hunter, Angulo’s trainer, warned him that he wasn’t going to continue to let Canelo bang on him. And like someone else already said, I also thought the fight should have been stopped sooner.

BruceLee Still Lives

Largo, I totally agree with you. If you listen to Virgil Hill a round or two before the stoppage, he tells Angulo that he is not going to let him take anymore punishment. He tells him that he needs to show him something in order to continue. From the first round on Canelo looked to be putting in heavy bag work. Poor Angulo, Virgil should have called it sooner.

It’s always a shame to see a fighter lose the fight before they even step in the ring. Weeks could have stopped the fight in the 6th or 7th round and I wouldn’t have complained. Angulo looked like a slug. However, that’s not Alvarez’s fault. He did exactly what he was suppose to. He lit up Angulo right from the start. I’m not sure where Angulo goes from here. He takes way too much punishment for a guy who has a family that depends on him. I wish him the best.

You know what’s worth noticing? Angulo was able to connect with his powder-punches every time he wanted…but he was just doomed from the get go, no energy whatsoever. The poor guy was DOA-dead on arrival…Weeks did the right thing, of course he did; That wasn’t a fight, it was a guy punching a half-dead fighter…

Posted March 13, 2014 10:30 pm

Weeks is probably the best ref. in boxing & he did the right thing; Anybody who knows even a little bit about boxing knows that. Angulo was done at the weigh-in & he was totally SPENT & incapable of throwing ANYTHING with power from the first second of the first round…Canelo beat a corpse. That’s all there’s to it…

Sometimes a fighter must be saved from himself props to weeks for saving angulo. He had no shot at winning that fight! No need to take unnecessary punishment. Angulo has the rest of his life to live! Canelo is a beast!
