Off subject: Sad to hear of the loss of Micky Duff. John H.Stracey, Alan Minter, John Mugabi, Jim Watt, Terry Downes, John Conteh, Charlie Magri, Howard Winston & Joe Calzaghe all benefited from him. 15 bells!!

You know, Thompson is supposedly only about 4 inches taller than Solis but in that photo he looks at least 8 inches taller.

I had the fight a toss up after the weigh-in but was leaning towards Solis to get the nod. I think Solis will have himself to blame but the judges picked the wrong winner.

If Solis lazy, Tony was dreadful. The fight was a bore but the better man lost. Anyway it’s Turkey where corruption is rife.

Actually, scratch that: Pulev could actually pass for a Mexican. Solis couldn’t (very, very, very few black people in Mexico).

Posted March 22, 2014 7:15 pm

Killing Moon The Soothsayer

Punch: I had Solis in front after the 4 first rounds then thought he lost 5 in a row and won the last 3…But Thompson outworked him for the whole fight…Perhaps minus the 3 last rounds…That’s a problem…You might think they didn’t hurt him…But if you looked at Solis face they did some damage…It was a close fight imo…Work ethics against Defining punches…I’m not gonna blame the judges for this one…The only one who can be blamed is Solis for fighting in spurts and snoozing in the ring…He’s a good boxer with alot of wasted talent…Hopefully this is a wake-up call to take his training more seriously..

“burrito boy” looks about as Mexican as Pulev does.

I wonder who Wilder will face next then, since Stiverne, Arreloa, Fury, Chisora and Thompson are all tied up. They surely won’t put him in with Pulev or Povetkin … at least, I’d be very surprised. Solis maybe?

Posted March 22, 2014 7:09 pm

Wlad_God

Glad to see Solis sent to the minor leagues, he doesn’t belong in the HW division, since he so fat he has nowhere to go, could never make weight below HW. GLad to see Tony pick up some checks, schooled the burrito boy tonight in a not even close fight, had it 8 rounds to Tony and I was being nice to Solis.

Posted March 22, 2014 7:08 pm

This is not the amatuers , those judges don’t know how to score a fight. Those shot had no pop no effect. Effective punching is what counts in pro boxing and Tony showed none of that. This was a terrible decision your comments below suggest the say.

Tony is in line to fight the winner of the Fury/Delboy fight.

@killing

Okay, fair enough. I only tuned in at the start of the fifth, and didn’t watch it closely enough to score — would be asleep now if I had.

It almost makes me wish Haye would unretire, as annoying as he is with his constant injuries… Wilder vs Haye is probably the most exciting fight that could be made at HW.

Posted March 22, 2014 7:03 pm

Killing Moon The Soothsayer

Anonymous: I gave the first 4 rounds to Solis too…Thompson had more punches but I felt Solis landed the more defining shots…But they were close rounds..

Wladimir stopped him in six, but he can sure take a punch (unlike Wilder’s recent foes).

Oh well, Thompson vs Wilder?

Posted March 22, 2014 7:00 pm

I meant: the commentators said that the JUDGES gave the first four or five to Solis…

Solis is just looking forward to all those kebabs.

Posted March 22, 2014 6:59 pm

Killing Moon The Soothsayer

Punch: Jabs and straights are scoring shots…And Solis did nothing but stand in the ring from the 5th to the 9th round…

Posted March 22, 2014 6:59 pm

Wlad_God

Punch, you need some glasses, punch stats were off the charts for Tony, Solis sucks face it, no power, lazy, a bum, TOny has better skills, I knew he would win, very underrated fighter, had the reach and height to keep fatso off him.

Posted March 22, 2014 6:58 pm

The commentators said they gave the first four or five to Solis! It doesn’t make sense. Oh well… Solis is too out of condition to deserve any big fights anyway.

@ Anonymous – I have to disagree with you: Stiverne vs Arreola I was very entertaining. Say what you want about Arreola’s weight, but he never gets tired and never stops throwing punches. Both Stiverne and Arreola would beat Solis and Thompson easily in my opinion.

Posted March 22, 2014 6:52 pm

Killing Moon The Soothsayer

Yeah, I think it’s 7-5 Solis because of the last 3 rounds…But wouldn’t be surprised of a draw…

Solis vs Wilder might be interesting inasmuch as Solis is durable, and may be able to land some meaningful shots, so we may get to find out about Wilder’s chin and stamina, but really, Solis needs to get in shape. It’s disgraceful.

Dissapointing, both out of shape. Thompson is 16 lbs over where he should be and Solis is 20 over, look for boring fight, the younger Solis should win with the younger body being fresher. Thompson should take some of the early rounds then fade, as he normally does around the 7th round.

Swedish Boxing Fan

I’m uselly a person who put bets on sports BUT this time I feel just for fun to make a bet.

I bet that the former 2-time world heavyweight title challanger Tony “The Tiger” Thompson will win by UD or late round TKO against Odlianer Solis. Thompson is ranked, 8# by IBF and 15# by WBC while Solis somehow is ranked 5# by IBF and 10# by WBC BUT Fightnews ranks Tont Thompsin as the 16th best heavyweight in the world now while Solis is out of the rank.

Why? Well Tony Thompson is 42 years old and have passed his best days as a heavyweight contender BUT he have still prooven to be a worthy contender and have been better ring active and fought good opponents in the 3 recent years with KO heavyweight prospect David Price twice and fought highly regareded top contender Kubrat Pulev to a decision contest loss and that just in 2013.

Odlainer Solis, 33 however have been in the shadows sence 2011 and his fights haven’t been the best opponents or most interesting fights seen and I feel that Solis is not that hungry to win and become a world heavyweight champion.

Thompson is not the best heavyweight in the world but he don’t duck a challange and have time after time in his career as an underdog given us good fights and he is still hungry for fighting, even aiming to fight the top opponent Tyson Fury if he now can defeat Solis and you can see his hunger to fight, not pay day greed but fight and earn.

I will cheer for Thompson this time and wish for a good fight.

Posted March 22, 2014 8:30 am

Lenin

Even an as usual out of shape Solis should be able to ko Thompson in the later rounds. Solis can bang and he sure as hell can box your ears off, but his physical state is as sad as is has always been. With a different manager and trainer he would be ruling the heavyweight scene. If Thompson wants to win, I hope he has worked a lot on uppercuts. That’s how you can hurt Solis: slip uppercuts through his defense, and you can rock him. Nevertheless, I expect Solis to win this and to shamble on to another payday.

Posted March 22, 2014 7:59 am

Hope the Tiger wins by KO late Rounds
Bookies are paying 51-1 for a Thompson stoppage
That’s gotta be worth a go looking at the sorry state of Solis

Just to remind you how they count you out even if you’re on your feet when you fight Solis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJZO1HTnHNw
Nice knockdown, though. Solis can bang, and he sure as hell can box. If only he would have a manager and trainer who would torture him into some form of physical fitness… One can dream.

Tony regains his gate keeper status of the HW ranks with the win. Tony very well could fight his way to a WBC Title now that a K-Bro is not there to defend it.
