If it were all down to population we would have more talented fighters around regardless of weight class, wouldn’t we?

China is well funded so where are the Roy Jones jr like phenom fighters?

And that would also mean that the current WW division is at its best and that the likes of SRR, SRL, Hearns etc. would be…..what exactly?

Quality over Quantity is the simple answer. Everything should get better with time but it doesn’t always. Rome was that case example. Empires can expand but also decline at the same time.

Boxing requires TEACHERS and good competition amongst peers to become better. There is a reason why many still come to the States and its not like the USA is still in her glory years in boxing.

Dazani, don’t heed K2. Like TARK and a few others, if you don’t bow down and lick the feet of the K brothers, then they think you are scum. Yes, the K brothers have dominated their era, but as a boxing fan you have the right to prefer whichever era you wish. I’m fed up of these bullies ganging up on anyone who dares suggest LENNOX defeated Vitali or that TYSON was a shell when he was bashed by Danny Williams, etc.
Their modus operandi is to gang up and shout anyone else down, which is not the civilised way to debate any argument. The worst examples of these filibusters and professional bullies is TARK who tries to pick one sentence or word in a whole comment and twist it into such a way as to try to show the poster in a bad a light as possible.
TARK is someone who is destructive and always out to rubbish the greats of the past because he was overlooked, slighted and missed the train all those years ago. He now uses thus forum to brow beat people who are recognised with several years in the game, but he can’t disguise his bitterness of being overlooked and left in their wake.

Speaking of Wladimir Klitschko, his birthday is tommorow! (2014-03-25), He will turn 38 years old and still going strong.

The heavyweight champion of the world sence 2006 with 15 world title defences and a total world heavyweight title record of 22-2-0 with KO’s 17 from two title reigns so he is strong on the champion throne.

Wladimir Klitschko wanted to fight Corrie Sanders in a rematch after he teamed up with Emmanuel Steward and offered Sanders a fight but Sanders decided to retire.

Wladimir Klitschko was good when he was 1st time champ but he had many flaws and his defence and style that Steward helped him correct to the better and Sanders knew that as well and probebly felt it was better to enjoy that victory for he had and knew he could not repeat the achivment.

Corrie Sanders was a power-house tho and deserves his credit and resperct as a heavyweight fighter.

Tiger got avoided until he was well into his 30′s…Sanders too when it comes down to it. I was there for the Sander’s Wlad fight. Sanders was smooth in the ring that night, and one hell of a fine sidestep to knock Wlad flying.
There is no reason for Wald to fight Thompson again…that second fight sucked big time.

The Bronze bomber is at least in shape….and finally moving into range of the top five contenders. Odd, everyone just talks about his right hand…never seen him, but heard he had a jab too.

So basically what I’m trying to say is it is better to only watch HWs fight from different eras when comparing how talented the field is. And since the HWs today are 200+ pounds, stick with those fighters. I wouldn’t suggest watching the lighter-weight fighters and then watching the HW division because few would stick out as good…like Wlad would.
I think the 90′s had a better talent pool. The 80′s weren’t actually bad but there were a lot of wasted talent, much like today actually. Get in shape would be the first thing I would say to these guys. I think they field would look a lot better.

But I do agree that Wlad’s overall ability and what he brings to the table gives an appearance that the rest of the field is horrible. They are not. Wlad has the technical skills and ability of fighters that fight in lower weight classes. The HWs tend to be average to just above average when compared to other fighters in the past.
However, and I’ve said this before, the HW division has never really been that talented from a technical standpoint so it does depend on how you are rating it. Sometimes sheer size can overcome a talented lighter fighter depending on how naturally big he is. Ex: I don’t think Marciano is hanging with some of the “contenders” that came about later. But someone like Joe Louis has proven that a natural 200 pound HW can deliver wins over a field of Giants that lack in the technical talent that say Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe and Wlad have.

The talented fighters are there but what is messed up is this safe route that they all go. Fighting b level fighters on thier way to a final titlefight. Its must be the best way to earn as much as possible but they dont develop eny hype and the same skill wise.

You can tell talent. In “Soccer” there are many talented players. You don’t see that in boxing. You can say the big names like Messi and Ronaldo and so on, and those two are Great, even above the field, however, it doesn’t take away from the amazing talent right behind them that you can tell they are well conditioned and talented. Again, you don’t see this in the HW division in boxing.

Part of it is Talent and other parts of it is teaching.

The Heavyweight Division is far deeper in talent today than ever before… There are many reasons for this:

1. The population of the world has more than doubled since Muhammad Ali turned pro in 1960… Twice the world population means twice the talent pool.

2. A huge slice of the planet is now producing top professional heavyweights—in countries where a Professional Boxing infrastructure was outlawed, and non-existent before 1990.

3. Over 130 countries have well organized government funded or privately sponsored boxing programs today. Fewer than 50 countries had such programs in the 1960’s. Global talent in the heavyweight class is much broader, deeper, and more wide spread today than ever.

4. Discrimination against southpaws has ceased… The Klitschko Bros each faced more southpaw challengers than any other Heavyweight Champion not named Klitschko. For instance, Lennox Lewis never faced a southpaw in his entire pro career.

In fact—the Klitschko Brothers fought more southpaws then ALL Heavyweight Champions from the 20th Century COMBINED.

This was from Fightnews.com article – On the other hand, Solis’ performance left a bitter taste for promoter Ahmet Öner, who signed the former Olympic heavyweight gold medalist out of the amateurs and stood by “La Sombra” his entire pro career.

“I’m very disappointed in Solis,” said Öner. “With such a big opportunity I would have expected that he would really give everything and run through a wall, if need be. But he didn’t even knock on the wall. He was lethargic and didn’t deserve to win this fight. Congratulations to Tony Thompson, who had a good performance.” – Ahmet Öner.

42 year old veteran Tony “The Tiger” Thompson won by clear SD and once again defeated the younger one!

I wonder where Odlianer Solis goes from here. Will there be made a rematch or will Thompson advance to fight Tyson Fury later this year? We will see.

Tyson Fury needs to get past hard hitter and European heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora in there rematch and WBO world title eleminator fight.

Congratulations Tony Thompson for another fine victory and opponent to your record.

“Vitali is not the GOAT. Stop.”

Wlad holds the WBA superchamp, WBO, IBO, IBF, and The Ring Heavyweight championship titles. Vitali held only the WBC heavyweight title. Wlad is the second longest reigning heavyweight champ of all time next to Joe Louis, and third in title defenses with 15. Wlad has fought 16 more fights than Vitali but has only three losses on his record versus two for Vitali.

I find it hard to see how Vitali is the GOAT heavyweight rather than his brother Wladimir.

Wladimir didn’t avenge 2 of his alosses…and that’s OK.

His brother Vitali stopped Corrie Sanders and Ross Purrity. Wlad stopped Brewster and Byrd. They avenged each other—except they couldn’t get Lewis in a ring again.

George Foreman didn’t avenge ANY of his 6 losses. Ali certainly didn’t avenge all his losses and neither did Dempsey or Louis. The only HW Champs to avenge all their defeats are Tunney and Lewis. They got the opportunity to do that and Vitali didn’t.

Wladimir beat Lamon Brewster with ease, with a broken left hand no less—which Wladimir never said a thing about in the interview following the fight … after Brewster quit in his corner after taking a few hard rights.

It’s ridiculous to hold the K Bros to higher standards than other ATG’s have been held to. Vitali was the GOAT Heavyweight Champion … and Wladimir is certainly in the top five all time, along with Holmes, Lewis, and Vitali.

perfect perfection wlad loss to (24-13-1) journey man purity. Wlad loss to (38-2) underdog sanders, and did not revenge his loss. He would not touch sanders again. He did not go after Purity either. Although Wlad loss to Brewster, he did deal with his ghosts by fighting Brewster again. It was definitely a win that wlad could win. Brewster fights with his face at you. Brewster may have serious health problems when he get older. He took lots of shots in his fights.

Wlad-Pulev 2014 is the best HW fight to be made.

Pulev may not the best for some, but he has done everything asked of him to be the contender for the IBF belt. Thompson, if given the chance to fight for the WBC belt, will probably win it. That is how bad it is in the USA.

Don’t get me wrong, you can still have great fist-fights between two B-level fighters. Putting two “A” level fighters in there tends to favor a more technical fight. Although when two of those fighters put heart in front of it all, that’s when you really get a high performance fight.

Let’s go to another division and another fighter who is being hyped up, GGG. Now, many have argued he has yet fought the best of the best at this point (which isn’t his own doing) but I can tell this Man has true talent and ability. He is the real deal.

Some guys don’t need that technical ability to be awesome. Young George Foreman wasn’t technical supreme but he was an awesome brute of a fighter that had that rare ability of power, strength and ferociousness that made up the difference. That’s when it becomes the exception.

Pulev isn’t that great and you have fans hyping him up like he is. He is not. The current crop in the HW division is not that great. Again, the HW division has always been one of the least stacked divisions in the talent pool as far as the technical side of it goes but I’m also not going to hype someone up just because one Girl looks halfway decent after many shots of vodka by 2PM compared to whatever mutants are left in the tavern.

Solis needs to take a cold hard look at himself, and decide if he’s willing to make the necessary sacrifices required in the last say 3-5 years of his career. He needs to do road work and proper conditioning. I’d suggest he gives boxing work outs a break for about 5 months and concentrate on losing about 40 pounds through hardcore road work and conditioning. His diet needs to change to achieve this goal. Sensible eating, and cutting out solid food after 7.30pm is the way to go. Cut out alcohol, cakes, crips and all junk food. If I had a chance to commit the next 5 years to hard work for the reward of millions and recognition in the sport of boxing, I would do it. If he’s not motivated to do it, he should quit now and then go on to do whatever he’s really interested in. Losing to a 42 year old Tony Thompson should embarrass him. I’m embarrassed for him.

I’m talking about Pulev’s ability to throw punches, balance, etc. is not great where Wlad’s is.

Posted March 23, 2014 11:10 am

@Dazani – “If he were a smaller fighter with his current ability and skill, we would be just another decent fighter.”

Well, yeah, but you could make the exact same argument about Wlad Klitschko. Drop him a couple of inches in height and suddenly his chin is far, far easier to touch because we know his traditional defence is a little sloppy (hence his reliance on range and clinching). A shorter Wlad Klistchko in my opinion would be akin to a HW Amir Khan.

Pulev has good fundamentals. He’s not exciting, but he gets the job done. He has a good chin, very good endurance and his punch placement is awesome (especially the timing of the jab). Similar to Klitschko, he also seems to be able to wear down opponents solely off of the jab.

I think a fight between Wlad and Pulev is very interesting in many ways (though it’d likely be boring as hell to watch). Both are relatively “safety-first” fighters that work off of the jab, so it’d end up being a slow fight decided by positioning and footwork.
I reckon you’d be lucky to see Wlad throw a right hand in the entire fight, and Pulev will be nullified by clinching if he tries to gamble and follow up on his jabs.
The interesting part for me is that if Pulev actually outjabs Wlad, is Wlad willing to gamble to win the fight? How willing is he to put himself in danger in order to land his own shots (i.e. in recent history he’s only really shown an ability to let his hands go when he’s completely out of trouble)?

Posted March 23, 2014 11:03 am

Dazani

Kubrat Pulev, I don’t get the hype from some of the boxing fans. Have we lowered our expectations that far just because the HW division lacks in talent?

I’m not saying the HW division has always been loaded, it hasn’t, talent is rare in that division, but let’s not just take anything that looks decent and call them great just because. If he were a smaller fighter with his current ability and skill, we would be just another decent fighter.

You look at Wlad when he was younger and he was Awesome. You knew right away that this is “Talent.” Perfect precision punching, balance, combination punches, etc.
He did lack some things from a technical stand-point that Emanuel came in adjusted but you just knew he was the real deal. I don’t see that with anyone else today like that. But Wlad is the elite talent of the division like other HOF have been so not every top guy has to be that talented, I know that. But there is a fall off in ability if you compare the competition

For one, I think many need to lose weight and get that lean athletic look. Maybe they wouldn’t look so sloppy fighting if their bodies weren’t so sloppy looking. Train like athletes.

I#ve just watched the fight. Tony Thompson has won this bout fair and square. He was the more active boxer, while Solis in most round just fought for the last minute. But Thompson got caught pretty often by Solis, while Thompson mostly hit Solis’ gloves. Nevertheless, Thompson was the one marching forward and throwing more punches, so in the end it’s the right decision that he has won this. Solis is 33 years old, so I doubt that he can save his career by picking up hard training. This ship has sailed years ago. It’s a shame to see the biggest hw talent in this shape, wasting his great abilities. I guess he’s happy with what he’s achieved and thinks he can live off the money he has made for the next 4 decades or so. I was convinced that he would win vs. Thompson, but Solis is just too fat, too lazy, and too smug.

Hopefully Thompson gets a good payday fight out of this… I figure a fight against Fury or Wilder would be well deserved (or Chisora if Dereck takes out Fury, though I’d be surprised if that happened).
I think Thompson would be a really good yardstick for both of those guys, though I wouldn’t expect him to come out with his hand raised in either scenario.

Have to agree and say that Fury is a solid fighter with a very solid chin. He was put down both times after clowning around; dropping after being hit flush by a heavyweight doesn’t indicate a weak chin. Nothing wrong with taking the occasional knockdown in a fight just not if it renders you dazed and confused ala McCall – Lewis I or Rahman-Lewis I. More recently Pricey comes to mind…

IМ0. Pulеv is fаr morе supеrior thеn Furу. Мorе skillеd, dirtу, hаs fаntаstik jаb, iron chin, аnd furу аlrеаdу running for him lаst уеаr.

Assyrian God, Fury does have a weak chin. How many times has he been down now? 5? All against weak punching opposition.

It is hard to understand, how somebody has thought that Solis can someday rule HW division. Yes, he is skilled but not anything special, enough fast but only if we think hand speed. You can’t compare his movement to Haye or body movement to other small man -Mike Tyson. Solis is too weak to heavy and much too short. He has lack of relentless that can compensate his weakness. I don’t see any future to him in HW .

When you think future of HW you must pick names like Fury, Pulev, Wilder, Joshua and don’t count out Helenius too, he is likely coming back on may and looks today really good on his training.

true. Wilder has one punch, an amazing punch but is at this point a one handed fighter. Thompson or pulev would really test him and he would need more than just one punch. Tony vs wilder would be a great fight and test how good wilder is. Pulev should fight wlad after the leapai joke fight.

Pulеv is swol stаrtеr. Вut аftеr 5round hе is а monstеr. Put him with Dеontау аnd will bе intrеsting fun fight. Pulеv hаs iron chin аnd grеаt cаrdio, slick -skillеd purе Вoxеr!

Wildеr hаs onlу thе punch

Good job Thompson! Finally someone has put this Solis guy out of his misery… always said he had no business in the HW division. Fury, Chisora, Wilder, Pulev and even Price would KO him. Will be great to see Thompson – Fury, Thompson – Wilder. But in all honestly I cant see Wilder getting past Stiverne or Arreola.

“D

Anonymous you’re an idiot. Wilder would knock Thompson out before the sound of the opening bell faded away. TT is old, fat, slow, thick, scared, and he can’t fight. He can’t box or punch either.”

Lol typical … Yeah Thompson is everything you said he is but when he wins than I will see you whine is how ” wilder came in out if shape ” lol

Posted March 23, 2014 2:20 am

wilder vs thompson is the test wilder needs. He fought a skills but zero power heavyweight. Thompson is tall, skilled and has power. He smashed price twice, won the first 3 rounds against pulev and just beat solis. Thomspon is still america’s best heavyweight. Wilder step it up!!!

I’m going to copy a topic and say it simply, this is the difference between an Amateur Medalist and a Pro Elite.

Solis is a waste of nothing. Never had the chops as a pro. Never could see his chops to begin with. Retire fatty, retire. You Suck and so do Cubans at boxing. Wooof…there go Cuban hopes for any presence at the HW division. Solis is a fraud. ive been saying it for years.

Posted March 23, 2014 1:19 am

solis should be beating all these guys.just goes to show how important hard training and staying in decent shape is to a persons athletic abilitys.solis slow and doing nothing but catching punches to survive is such a dis appointment for his fans.

Vitali knocked Solis out with a right hook to the temple, Solis went down, was dizzy, hurt his knee only after he went down because Vitali landed the right hook………..if Vitali had not stopped Solis in the first round, he would have knocked him out in the second or third.

No wonder Wilder refused to fight Thompson………..Vladimir Klitschko knocked Thompson out two times……………Thompson would stop Wilder, but Wilder knows it and refuses to fight him…………..Wilder is a fraud……….

So frustrating. Solis has so much ability. He was giving Vitali a boxing lesson before the injury.

Hahahahaha …. Truly amazing ” boxing lesson “??? Hahahahahaha. Gtfo!!!!

I was right when I said tony will bear solis …. He was always very underrated , and somehow fans never give any credit to tony when he wins but always claim his opponents came in ” out of shape ” out of shape my arrrrszssssssss!!!!

Solis lost his hunger for Boxing when he defected.

The fight is in the stages: Tony vs Wilder…….it has got to happen. And you know what, Tony just might take Wilders azz and goose egg. So,..maybe Wilder avoids Tony, let us see.

@ Anonymous: Just because he’s Cuban doesn’t mean he shuns burritos, and you’re a racist for your evil post about Cubans not eating burritos. For all you know, Cubans have their own burritos, but just call them something else. JUST KIDN- I couldn’t resist!! Have a great week and God bless.- the BLUESMAN

P.S. You’re probably right- I’ll bet he doesn’t eat burritos. :-)

wilder should fight thompson and “if” he succeeds should fight the winner of stiverne vs arreola for the title. Wlad must face pulev after he fights the bum leapai and then hopefully the winner of fury vs chisora. 2014 could be interesting. Good win for thompson.

Rob Smiff’s ARSE

Trying to watch this now.. worst heavyweight fight for a while. Fury would piss on Thompson, amazed the Tigger beat Price- he (Price) must be bloody rubbish. FURY KO 3 PULEV whilst we’re here.

Really. This is pitiful. Are we all saying that once again TT is the best challenger out there and deserves the mandatory slot? This current era of HWs is enough to drive a man to suicide.

its a shame because he was a beautiful amateur boxer who despite being under sized by way of height could have done great things as a pro heavy weight such was his skill level – but he never looked in good shape. not once

@Wlad_God

Can you please stop talking about Solis and burritos? He’s Cuban, and doesn’t look even a little bit Mexican, you ignorant swine. (I hate hotdog boys who can’t get people’s national cuisine right when they’re insulting them.)

Prof Konje

Due to the open scoring, I turned off the fight when I heard that the three judges had Solis ahead. My eyes told me differently and I said well here comes another robbery. The latest robbery was Herrara beating Garcia and getting the screws. I’m very happy that Thompson won.

If Solis lazy, Tony was dreadful. The fight was a bore but the better man lost. Anyway it’s Turkey where corruption is rife.

The decision was sketchy giving the time it took to announce it. Solis controlled the fight built an early lead but somehow lost? Tony did absolutely nothing in that fight and should’ve lost.

Swedish Boxing Fan

Well, I have right and wrong at same time. My two full bets was Tony Thompson winning with a UD contest or a late round TKO against Odlianer Solis but hey, 42 year old veteran Thompson won by clear SD and once again defeated the younger one!

Lazy, yes. Fat, yes. Lack of power, yes.

Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have skill. Try again.

Does this mean that Thompson has to box Wlad again? I did like their first match.

Posted March 22, 2014 7:04 pm

Solis wasn’t schooling anyone but a burrito, let alone Vitali, I don’t understand how you people think the CueBall has skill, speed ain’t enough in the HW division, esp with no power, lazy and fat.

For all his talent Solis needs to quit boxing and pick up darts – that sport will suit his energy levels much better
