“Why are all these fans so interested in watching Floyd fight???”

I can think of a number of reasons:

A large portion of them hope to see him lose–see, they’re not really his fans. Many of those same people and still more go to his fights just so they can say they went to a Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight. Many of these “fans” are from Southern California. It’s important to be able to bragg about just about everything if you’re from Southern California. Seeing a Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight live automatically bestows bragging rights. OMG! Many other fans are actually there to watch and support Floyd’s opponent–not Floyd himself. How many you think went to the fight for Canelo instead of Floyd. Many thousands, I’m guessing.

Havoc you are 100% wrong. Basically you are saying that in Pacs last PPV 35 thousand were hardcore boxing fans and the rest were casual. Seriously doubt that

Obviously this writer is not a very studious when it comes to knowing the legendary Manny Pacquiao. People have to stop dwelling on the age (35) stuff. This is one super naturally gifted athlete. Manny Pacquiao hasn’t lost a step, he’s actually gained 2 or 3. Has anyone watched his sparring? I have seen the man, and he’s coming out with both guns blazing. Tiring? Stop drinking before making these statements, Manny Pacquiao has never tired in his life. He’s cutting off the ring, using the right uppercuts and setting things up with his jab. Manny is on fire right now, and he will be in peak condition come April 12, and I for one will be there. The man is sky high on emotions, and he’s more than just confident. Bradley will realize that Manny Pacquiao is not the same fighter he stepped into the ring the first time. He’s not getting older, he’s getting, faster, stronger and he loves the attention of this fight. Bradley is under the impression that Manny isn’t the same fighter he once was, and that’s true because he’s better. Freddie likes to stir things up, but when you see Manny fight next Saturday, you will be shocked. Bradley isn’t going to out box, out fight, out counter, out run Manny Pacquiao. He will take a savage beating and won’t know what hit him. Manny will win in stunning fashion before round 4 or no later than round 9 unless Bradley runs all night, but that’s not going to happen. He will eventually come to fight, and you will see him drop. Manny Pacquiao wil do what Duran did after his ko loss to Hearns. He will do the unthinklable because he’s a special type of person that can rise to the occasion, and he will come April 12. trust me on this. Manny will shock the boxing world, but not me. I know what he’s capable of. Manny is the best

Don’t matter what or who are fighting on the undercards. Most fight fans are casual fans and not to worry about the hardcore fans who knows all about boxing they are just 10% of the paying fans and 90% are casual fans.

Posted April 7, 2014 12:42 pm

PEEJ

This is why Arums PPV numbers have taken so many hits. He thinks the consumer which is us boxing fans don’t care about the under cards. He has obviously lost touch with the boxing fans if he actually thinks this is the case. No the casual fans may not care but he is catering to us boxing fans and trying to bring in the casual fans. Putting on good under cards only makes sense. But since he is basically matching all his fighters against each other and his stable isn’t the largest anymore, these are the types of fights he puts on. But lets not forget he used to put Butterbean and Mia StJohn on the under cards.

“What does it mean that under-card “does not” matter. Trust me it matters when I am the one paying $70, for one fight. HBO Should be ashamed of themselves for not putting on a better show.” – Arum recognizes that it’s not the hardcore boxing fans who buoy PPV card buys. It’s the mainstream morons who do. These people don’t even watch the undercards, they just lay down $70 to watch “the big fight.” So I’m not considering this PPV or Mayweathers. Top Rank and GBP can GTFO.

I actually agree with Havoc somewhat here…

I hate the way matchups are made these days…

Instead of the best fighting the best — often the three top boxers in a division own championships and are each fighting a slew of 2nd raters instead of each other.

“AND STILL” …. Of course and still… because, by design, you’re fighting guys who have zero chance to take your title.

I personally don’t find Floyd boring.. He’s a master… and he draws so many fans that it seems MOST people appreciate masterful defensive skills … Maybe there’s more boxing fans than brawling fans nowadays. The message seems to be: if you want to make tons of money in Boxing … learn how to box.

Posted April 6, 2014 7:30 pm

Hatersbeware

@Hidalg0– MMA has a couple of fatal flaws, that will keep MMA was being pushed as the angry white sport. College frat boys with drink to much, call each other bro, and drive 4×4 up and down the street to compensate for the fact that they little “wee wees”. The first heroes were guys like chuck lidell, Tito Ortiz, Josh Franklin. It was billed as a contrast to boxing where there were never any white champions. This was Dana whites initial strategy. These guys are now growing older, and will eventually loss interest. MMA has two flaws- 1) On any given night anyone can beat anyone, so you can never build a name and market that name cause though he won last time he may loss on his very next fight. 2) Fighter Longevity- An MMA fighter can only last 1-5 years at best due to injury and the grind it puts on your body. Soon people are going to get tired of paying 50-60 dollars to two dudes they dont know fight each other. In boxing it is the fighters who make the fight- Pac, Manny, GGG, Sergio- u want to see a the names fight- not just random guys.

I am supposed to be able to get my money’s worth yet this is a huge waste of my money. Though the main is even is about Manny and Bradley- I am paying for a night of fighting and entertainment. Since Paq fans don’t pay for the fight anyway they do not care, but does anyone see why Top Rank is such a weak organization.

Hit and not get hit is the name of the game. “THE SWEET SCIENCE” it is called. Throughout history pure boxers have risen to the top by outsmarting their opponents, applauded by the intellectuals but appalled by the grinders of the world. That’s why Dempsey was more popular than Tunney even in a loss than Tunney was after.

I do agree however that the best fighter is one that is both a Boxer and a Fighter like a Joe Louis, Sonny Liston, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, Mike Tyson (at his peak), etc.

MMA critics just don’t understand the art is about being the most well rounded fighter its not about a mastery of 1 techinque. Who puts it all together the best. Another thing is its brand new it will be innovated over and over like boxing was 20 years from 20 years after its birth until now. Dudes in old boxing footage look funny lol.

Yep. MMA sucks. i was all-in during UFC’s emergence during the 90s but what i appreciated about it the most (e.g., Royce Gracie) was determined to be unmarketable and unprofitable. nonetheless, it was Gracie’s demonstrations of technique over ferocity that i considered to be the very promise of MMA competition. masters of a variety of martial arts competing to prove which technique is actually the best in combat. the locks, choke, and submission holds proved to be the best. or at least Royce was the best at it. now MMA has become 3-fight contenders, single-digit “undisputed champions”(?), and 30-second main events, between opportunistic strikers and grapplers who rely on ferocity and strength rather than mastery of any formal discipline or technique. it’s not an art or science at all, unless it’s the art of brawling.

Only morons and casual fans can turn from boxing to MMA, I have more tan 20 years watching boxing and I never get tired of watching it, so I bet many of the guys who write here agree with me

Manny has been a great part of the sport, but at 35 with his style his reflexes are going to be the first thing to go, and once they go he’s going t be on a lot of trouble. Will this fight be the fight that shows this unavoidable decline? Maybe, we’ll see next week.

Floyd v Miadana is a good example of what an undercard can do for the #s no way was I gonna buy it until Kahn v my boy Collazo was added to the undercard. what makes Smith believe that the Bradley v. Pacquiao* headliner is a mainstream attraction? IMO, it’s a matchup that primarily hardcore fight-fans are interested in watching. otherwise, Pacquiao’s* brutal KO loss to Marquez ended his time in the spotlight and shoved him into boxing’s rear-view. in fact, a showdown between Beltran and Crawford would actually threaten to eclipse the appeal of a Bradley v. Pacquiao* correction-bout. true fight-fans consider this matchup a case of unfinished business to a previous boxing era NOT the emergence of a new era in boxing.
