MARVIN THE GREAT.

Posted April 30, 2014 2:41 pm

TARK

Hagler fought his share of bums… and he didn’t always do that well.

For instance: Marcos Geraldo, who was KO’d 10 times by bums before he fought Hagler… who couldn’t even floor the punching bag.

hagler fought great fighters, ggg fights bums.

Eagle Eyes

Always loved Hagler. Truly one of the greats.

Posted April 28, 2014 2:40 am

TARK

The way Hagler got punched around by crude swinging John Mugabi and completely outboxed by Leonard—who after all was a welterweight coming off a 3-year layoff — I don’t see any possible way Hagler could beat the undefeated Gennady Golovkin, who went 345-5 in the amateurs and beat everyone in the pros by 10,000 miles.

GGG was too good a defender, just punched too hard, and is too strong, too skilled, and too fast, and defends to well for Hagler.

GGG is already moving up in weight to challenge the bigger boys… and that’s something Hagler never did… Hagler couldn’t even beat all the smaller guys who came up from lighter weights … and couldn’t stop or floor Duran … Remember, Duran fought his first 60 plus fights as a featherweight and lightweight… Monzon killed Jose Napoles when he tried to move up — that’s what you’re supposed to do to little guys.

An absolute fantastic night, thanks to one Spencer Brown who fetches these world class Champions over. I thank you and Andy Booker for a great night.
But their are rumours that you are bringing over the great Floyd Mayweather in July.
Now I know you have the connections to bring over the old time greats, but come on Spence, surly this is just promo talk and just too big for you.
I’ve heard Leeds. Lets have it from the horses mouth?
But god bless so far, I’ve met some of my all time yester year greats. I also look forward to Bugner and Shavers night next month. Come on at £40 and a meal it’s a great night out. Lets support this sort of Entrepreneur who brings us this sort of world class night out.
Ps
Still think the Floyd M is is just promo hype:)

Absolute brutality . . .

I’d love to have seen Hagler against Benn (in their primes). I could see Halger winning by later stoppage – but imagine the bombs those 2 would be throwing all fight!

Didn’t take long for TARK, the shark to take huge chunks out if the ATG career of Hagler.

tark.stick to watching plastic legends like david toe haye dyson fury and kelly brook. leave the real legends to the real fight fans.

Ray Ray

Of course SRL is with the legends mentioned.

Posted April 27, 2014 5:07 am

Ray Ray

Wow Hagler would get beat by how many guys? A prime Jones jr, Hopkins, and Robinson are the only mentioned who would b a good fight….the rest would get killed & Robinson beats them all. GGG isn’t in the same breath, let him keep beating B level guys.

Posted April 27, 2014 5:06 am

DMX

Michael Nunn
James Toney
Sergio Martinez
Bernard Hopkins

Are you kidding me?
none of these guys would stand a chance against a peak Hagler
They would be destroyed . . .

Posted April 27, 2014 4:47 am

Happyboy

GGG has not beat a champion nor a top tier boxer.

Posted April 27, 2014 3:34 am

Happyboy

Tark – GGG beating Hagler. You’re a clown infact you should be put to sleep.

Posted April 27, 2014 3:33 am

TARK

Assyrian God says.., “Jones Jr and Calzaghe would have beaten Hagler, too fast, too mobile, too active.”

Add to the list of guys who would beat Marvin: Carlos Monzon… Mike McCallum… James Toney… Bernard Hopkins… Gennady Golovkin… Sergio Martinez… Stanley Ketchell… Mickey Walker… Harry Greb… Tiger Flowers… Ray Leonard… Ray Robinson… and Michael Nunn.

I think Hagler beats Nino Benvenuti… Joey Giardello… Gene Fullmer… Carmen Basilio… Rocky Graziano… Tony Zale… Jermain Taylor… Randy Turpin… and Marcel Cerdan…

The others 160 champs I don’t have a strong opinion about one way or the other… But nobody can point to a natural middleweight challenger who Hagler fought, who was an outstanding boxer like Leonard — who hadn’t fought in 3 years.

Hearns lacked a middleweight’s chin because he came up from WW… and Tommy wasn’t a real good defender.

I’ve heard it’s really easy to pull there
There were about 8 Lads I know who went up there for one night watching a Football Game
They all got they’re nuts in . . . .

Local skirt love it . .
Obviously someone told Marvin the same thing

Posted April 26, 2014 11:00 pm

Assyrian God

Jones Jr and Calzaghe would have beaten Hagler, too fast, too mobile, too active, however I think he would have beaten the likes of Toney, Benn, McLellan etc. However Hagler WAS an ATG Middleweight. I think he was robbed by Leonard, why cynically fought him late in his career when he was fading. No reason Hagler should have ”moved up” though, he was a natural Middleweight.

Posted April 26, 2014 7:31 pm

The Pinoy Pikey

What is it about this particular UK town that attracts the greats to visit–anyone??

Posted April 26, 2014 7:09 pm

The Pinoy Pikey

I’m babbling now, but, imo, Marvin was the last pure stay at home champion. He was that world class junk yard dog that knew where the fences were was right there when you came in. Folks can say what they want about his controversial fight with SRL and his difficult time with Duran, and the alleged notion that he avoided the “Body Snatcher” and didn’t want to move up for a fight with Michael Spinks (he didn’t move up ever–he stayed at home), however, no matter how you cut it, Marvin is in the top three greatest middle conversation.

Posted April 26, 2014 6:57 pm

The Pinoy Pikey

Funny, I didn’t mention SRR. You know, I don’t generally consider SRR in the greatest middle conversation, albeit, I do in the greatest of all time conversation (him and Homicide).

Posted April 26, 2014 6:51 pm

The Pinoy Pikey

“The Marvelous One” is in the greatest middleweight of all time conversation: Monzon, Hagler, Greb, ketchel, Walker, Burley etc. IMO, he is a the greatest middleweight of all time (but, that may be bias considering that I am from Boston). The Petronelli’s just passed away recently–still hard to believe. The Petronelli’s gym/building is still there on Petronelli Way in Brockton–it is vacant. “The Celtic Warrior” Steve Collins also used to train at that gym in the late 1980′s, amongst many other fantastic warriors.

Posted April 26, 2014 6:47 pm

TARK

This pudit says.., “Arguably the finest middleweight ruler in boxing history.”

You couldn’t successfully argue that with me.. How many middleweight champions got beaten by a welterweight coming off a 3-year-layoff—besides Marvin Hagler? Hagler was only 32 when he lost to Leonard. Marv was also taken the distance by chubby Roberto Duran—a guy who fought his first 60 plus fights as a lightweight. Hag took a lot of slow swings to the head from blooper throwing 154-pounder John Mugabi, who was hard to miss with a punch.

In contrast Carlos Monzon went undefeated in his last 80 professional fights… fought more successful title defenses against tougher middleweight challengers… was older when he finally retired… and probably would have beaten Hagler into the canvas if they arrived in the same era.

Marvin started at 154 and never had a problem making 160, usually 157-159

Marvelous Marvin Hagler is without a doubt one of the best ever. Forget Hopkins, Mayweather or even GGG. Hagler in his prime was a menacing monster that came to fight. Monzon would not have beaten him as great as he was. Roy Jones, Calzaghe, Toney all would have taken a beating. If fights were 15 rounds as true fighters fought, Hagler would have stopped all those guys I mentioned. He had power, speed and eventually walked you down with pressure. The Hagler vs Hearns and Leonard was past his prime. A true warrior was Marvelous Marvin Hagler. The Mugabi fight was a great one to watch. Sugar Ray Robinson would have had his hands full with Hagler.

“The catch weight fight from hell for FMJ would have been MMH”. You actually mention them in the same sentence? Get a grip sir, Floyd was a junior-lightweight out of the gate, while the Marvelous One joined the pro ranks as a (lean, mean) middleweight & stayed there throughout his career. It kinda makes Duran’s accomplishments even more incredible, doesn’t it? Damn, those guys were the bees knees!

durable, resilient, ambidextrous, sublime footwork, two-fisted punching power, and sheer ferocity was the promise of Hagler’s menacing glare. “WAR” was his business and he always packed enough to last 15 rounds, if necessary. avoided NObody while avoided by many. Hagler’s unbeatable prime was between 1980 and 1985 and he was easy to find. Boxing wasn’t the cluster-fu ck it is now. it was difficult to avoid (unless you didN’T want to make money) and difficult to be avoided. you NEEDED the best competition to be successful in the business end of the fight-game. there were few if any Pacquiaos* or Golovkins back then. Hagler’s exiting run v. Duran, Roldan, Hamsho, Hearns, Mugabi, and leonard (who he defeated) was fearless and evidence of the best and/or worthiest finding their way to Hagler’s undisputed turf. with the exception of Hamsho, each one carried the risk of defeat but only one produced a shameful but “official” loss. still simmering over that one. anyway, top-three middle of all-time. can not name four better, i.e., able to defeat the “Marvelous” one in a best of three.

Lots of American boxers have gotten well paid to do speaking engagements here. Any info on why? There’s plenty of boxing hotbeds but this city is somehow a draw for retired boxers. Is it just due to a lot of hardcore fans or is there some group whose purpose is to invite them to formal events?
