Chavez Jr, Murray, Macklin, Barker, Dzinziruk, Pavlik, Williams ”

Now go look up GGG’s resume….

SREDMOND

Martinez was hardly “a cherry picking ducker” facing BIG WW’s like Murray and Chavez Jr in succession…The man was trying to make some coin at an advanced age all this “ducking” talk centers around ONE fighter who people have a hard on for (GGG) truth is that Martinez had 2 shots at PPV and he took them, he defended MORE times than a lot of Champs get to in this ERA of shifting weight classes and flashes in the pan.. The odds makers did not believe in Cotto yet he defied so turning around now and acting like his victory was a forgone conclusion is bogus..

Posted June 12, 2014 4:35 pm

Fight Aficionado

We shouldn’t revise history here even if some of us are mad at Martinez for turning into a cherry picking ducker. He was an excellent fighter in his prime but that was years ago. Smacking down P Williams and Pavlik were big accomplishments. Those guys were beats at 160 at the time, it’s just after they lost that guys dogged on them. Martinez was indeed marvelous at that time.

I agree Martinez was no elite fighter. He was overrated. No he was no bum but he was no elite fighter either. He was more like a high B level fighter. Some nights he could look like an A fighter fighting against other B lever fighters and most other nights he looked like a high B fighter.

Posted June 11, 2014 11:26 pm

Tachyon

SREDMOND Martinez was a decent lower shelf fighter not a bum but not an elite either he was in the middle another Gatti. 54 fights against 50 lower tier fighters and 4 fights against fighters on a down hill slide. Cotto was the first elite Martinez ever battled and we saw what happened.

Martinez was FAR from a bum and he was indeed an elite fighter, he got rolling late in life and accomplished a lot once he got his opportunities, (Williams and Pavlik) pissing on the guy at 39 because a HOF fighter BUM rushed and flattened him is WEAK… Maravilla was the real deal, but his time was up ALL of our heroes and elites will lose if they hang around too long… Hops, Mayweather, and Marquez will all end up like Sergio or Pacquiao did if they keep going too far past their sell date… Boxing is cruel like that!

One other factor worth mentioning. Is i believe Martinez was not used to getting hit and that is why he took the punches so bad. It was rumored which i now believe to be true. That he was so worried about his knee’s and other injuries that he did not spar at all. Had sparred very little over 15 months. He basically worked the mitts a little, and decided he would just go for it on fight night. Sparring lets you know if you have it or not and prepares you for battle. Antonio Margarito was having his a$$ kicked in sparring before the Mosely fight. Oscar De la Hoya has to have Edwin Valero thrown out of his camp for the Manny Pacquiao fight because Valero was destroying him. Martinez was so bad he could not even get his ass kicked in sparing because hard sparing probably would have injured him.

I think people are putting way to much into Sergio’s bad knee, and not giving Cotto credit for what he did. He obliterated a champion who hadn’t lost a fight in four years. Sergio is use to fighting big, slow, weight drained fighters that he could dance around. Cotto put on a boxing clinic against a great fighter…simple.

Jonn E. JaGozza

Martinez showed too much pride in the 24/7 series building up to the fight. HIs pride and ego were too much and he showed no respect to Cotto. What Cotto did to this guy was to break his ego ( pride ) and devastate his greatness Although he would never admit it, he was emotionally broken down in this defeat… Should he retire ? I don’t know and only he knows for sure but it wouldn’t surprise me if he fought again and demanded a rematch… Remember he is an athlete ( Soccer and Bicycling ) and all athletes want to retire winning and not in defeat and the defeat he suffered was unlike anything he suffered before… I see him continuing on until he loses to a much less caliber opponent … Boxingdictionary.com “The Language of the Ring “

“when he was in his prime people avoided him, except paul Williams.” – True. DiBella used to rant about 154 lb guys avoiding him, then Williams finally gave him a shot at 160. And because of that history you’d think he’d have fought GGG instead of avoiding him. Never happened because once he was in a position of power he decided to play it safe and duck him. Now it’s too late for the hypocrites. Maybe GGG will hire him as a sparring partner.

Posted June 10, 2014 8:48 pm

KOrnerman

I think Martinez was used to fighting taller guys, Cotto’s smaller height seemed to trouble him and Cotto was ducking even lower and had good body movement and defence, classic Cotto, Martinez knees looked disjointed and his usual sneaky backhand left was being predicted and blocked every time, Cotto took the cyclist to school.

Posted June 10, 2014 6:53 pm

TARK

Martinez is washed up… Nothing is more obvious

In his two previous fights it looked like his knees needed surgery. The right orthopedic surgeon can fix your knees… there aren’t many who can. The wrong surgeon can wreck your knees… there are many of those.

From watching 24/7 before the fight, I saw that Martinez’s knee problems were caused by his strength trainer. I’m convinced Mike Tyson’s knee problems were caused by his strength trainer as well. They televised some of Tyson’s regimen. Tyson was stopped by two guys who weren’t fit to carry his workout bags. Mike’s knees were shot. At one point Vitali Klitschko took 4 years off to rehab his knees—right in the middle of his championship run.

A boxer needs great knees.. Boxing puts pressure on all your joints.. Strength building exercises must be designed to not stress the joints. The knees and shoulders are particularly vulnerable. Barbells should never be used because they lock the wrists. Dumbbells with the right lifting and pressing techniques can work. Sometimes you don’t even think there’s any problem—but a joint specialist can show you some on an MRI.

Gentlemen, Sergio Martinez was always a pompous overconfident fighter. At his best, he was good but never great. He was a good athlete, had good timing and excellent reflexes, but he was never a well rounded fighter. Look at his record and you see no one that stands out. Pavlik, Chavez Jr. Cintron, Williams, Macklin all were C-level fighters. He loved to dress well and look good for the cameras, but he was lucky to be in a weight division and boxing era that didn’t have many good or great fighters. Yes he was a champion, but never a great one and one that will be forgotten a month from now.

The results say it ALL. Cotto couldn’t drop Mayweather IF he fought him 4 times. But he dropped Martinez 4 times in ONE Fight. Martinez is FAR from ELITE at this point and he is not going to get it back. Even guys in their 20′s struggle to recover from knee injuries and this guy is 39…….NA NA NA NA….NA NA NA NA…HEY HEY HEY!!!! GOODBYE!!!!

Posted June 10, 2014 3:12 pm

SREDMOND

No need to kick Martinez while he’s down, likely for good he was a SOLID Champion and he was not a one hit wonder after having toiled so long in the shadows… He did a number on Pavlik, Williams and Chavez all boxers who bring issues for other fighters to the table, Cotto ushered him into retirement but that does not mean Martinez was not an elite fighter at one point nor a fraud… He is 39, and Cotto had ALOT more left than many gave him credit for…

Posted June 10, 2014 3:09 pm

Agree Martinez should pack it in. His body can’t handle the rigors of a 6-8 week training camp let alone an actual fight. He’s been brittle for years already and gets injured every fight. PS: First post since Friday and I’m posting to fast? LOL ESB.

Lets cool the jets on Cotto’s resurgence thanks to Roach. Cotto has beaten a tomato can and a finished Sergio Martinez. Although Cotto has looked good lets see him against Trout again or Canelo, GGG would demolish him so he won’t go there.

Martinez was a gutty fighter with a solid chin, unorthodox skills and serious athletic talent… This past Saturday he was shown that he is no longer an Elite fighter by Cotto coming up in weight to face him… More than anything Sergios reactions to Cotto’s blows showed me that he needs to hang it up at the age of 39… He was wobbling everytime Cotto caught him solid, jabs included… He was a very legit Champ and should be proud of his run, that said he’s finished..

Martinez was a great champion, similar skills as Roy jones jr. I agree, time to hang’em up although it is very difficult to do for a past champion for his caliber. The problem was not that he couldn’t take a punch/recover, but he could not move and had no punching power. I think he would just embarrass himself. He lost to Cotto, no shame. Maravilla, we will never forget you. In your prime, you would have destroyed Cotto, Gayweather and Pac in one night.

Posted June 10, 2014 7:48 am

Mike

This article goes as if it was an obvious outcome from the start. No one knew what state Martinez would be in. I honestly thought Cotto was gonna get hurt. Cotto was in the right place at the right time, let’s see how long he holds on to the strap when fighting mw guys much bigger than him and with less mileage on the clock.

Posted June 10, 2014 5:55 am

CurlyQ.Howard

Looking at how his knees limited Sergio’s movement and power (in punching), he most certainly should retire. Plus, over his last four fights he’s been knocked down at least once in ever single one of them. Sergio is no longer the fighter he once was, and it isn’t even close. Retire, Sergio, and do it now.

I think Roach was the master behind the curtain! He study Martinez and found the flaws. Martinez got caught and it was no luck!! Roach knew the strategy that would work against Martinez and Cotto executed to perfection! Like Roach said, Martinez had too many flaws which he overcame with athleticism and mastery reflexes but after a long layoff and all the injuries. He was vulnerable to defeat by the Cotto before Margarito the cheater!! Cotto confidence is at a new level and he is a scary guy NOW!! Boxing 80% mental 20 % skills!!!!

I think only Martinez knows if he can come back. He certainly was not able to take Cotto’s left hooks and rights. I thought Cotto was in trouble on this one but perhaps having Roach in his corner is what he needed. I’d like to see Cotto fight Alvarez at 160. Perhaps even Golovkin although Golovkin doesn’t have a large enough fan base and he hasn’t beaten anybody of note yet.

Posted June 10, 2014 12:09 am

Of course he should: he’s done. And I don’t understand the sudden pro-Cotto raves…he beat a man who shouldn’t have been allowed to fight. Such utter nonsense. Let’s see Cotto fight Chavez or GGG–they’ll both decapitate him!
