I love those old school guys, they really were as hard as nails, totally fearless, and more often than not they were really classy they way they conducted themselves outside of the ring too, and Basilio epitomized these qualities as well as anyone. Posted November 7, 2012 5:50 pmBo Bo OlsonThe two Robinson fights were on B&W TV. The First fight I was a Robinson fan…as a child, my hero lost. I really hated Carmine. In the second fight that Carmine lost, I became a fan of his too. Robinson beat him bloody, but didn’t beat him…they just didn’t have enough rounds. There was no give in him…and yes he was much shorter. I saw the Fulmer fight too. Became a Fulmer fan because of it. When it comes to tough, Carmine is right up there with Lamatta. True One and Only World Champion in Two weights….like having 12 belts now. Rest in Peace, his type comes once or twice in a life time. Posted November 7, 2012 5:37 pmGonzo the DragonbornWhat an awful last few months. First Steward, then Sanders, and now Basilio. I’m a huge, huge fan of all three of them. Granted, Basilio had a great innings and he lived a full and plentiful life. However, the guy was an absolute legend in the truest sense of the word and it’s very sad to see another of the old guard leave us. What a truly great fighter he was in his prime too. He was as tough as any man who ever stepped foot in the ring and he had a heart the size of an ocean. The Canastota Clouter quickly walked up to the nattily attired Robinson to meet a fellow boxer and have a few words with him. He said, “Mr. Robinson, I’m a great fan of yours. I don’t know if you’ve seen me fight, I’m Carmen Basilio.” … Robinson shook Basilio’s hand without looking at him, said “Ay man” quickly changed directions and hurried off as if ditching a pesky pan handler. Basilio felt like 2 cents and vowed he would one day beat Robinson if he never accomplished anything else.
