At least there is never a documented instance of a Filipino champion that whined after a loss and one who thrash-talked his way out of a potential fight because of fear. Quality trumps quantity !!

PEEJ – That’s how Toprank operates. They intentionally avoid real competition and keep cherry-picked fights in-house.

I like how Donaire thinks he is better than everybody and people have to prove their worth to HIM to even consider stepping in the ring. @rac you make it sound like filipinos follow a higher standard which we know is BS from all the pactards that invade this board.

Nonito never thrash- talks as Manny does not also and the two do not put emphasis on challenging potential opponents publicly. In the Philippines, where I come from and where the two fighters come from, it is considered rude. If you are not from the Philippines you will not also understand why the level of deference these two fighters have for their promoters and trainers is different from the norm here. Back home if you prosper in any endeavor and there are others beside yourself who made it happen, the debt of honor can be deeply ingrained and be self-imposed for a long time.

The promoters may get in the way of a Donaire vs Mares match up but also Donaire has not shown that he wants to face the best with the current comp that he has recently fought. Yeah he beat Vic way back when and Montiel but that is it. Yeah the last guy he fought was supposed to be good but he went 12 with a way past his prime Marquez, the guy was coming off a 15 month layoff and didn’t throw but maybe 10 punches a round. Every time some serious is comp brought up to Donaire in an interview he comes up with lame excuses on why he doees not want to fight them

@te tumbo Thanks, I would like to see that fight, but from a sensible point, it is just a dream fight, not because of the fighters (both are warriors) but because of the promoters.

RCA, co-sign that analysis of Mares v. Donaire. Nonito does present a nightmare variety of offensive threats that Mares may foolishly test too soon before realizing they’re Real. it’s a mandatory matchup that i’d like to see ASAP.

Mares introduced Moreno to a new level of grit and intensity and made it His Fight. Abner has just enough handspeed and punching-form to reject being ignored as an option. ultimately, he accomplished his goal: take it to Moreno, make him uncomfortable, exploit his reluctance to fight on-command, because Mares simply isn’t the type of fighter who can be swatted away with impunity. instead, he created and exploited openings that Moreno doesn’t expect. a hotly-contested bout but convincing win for Mares.

I picked Mares to beat Moreno and he did. He’ll beat Rigondeaux too if they ever fight. Nonito is a different issue, Mares has never faced someone with Nonito’s , power, chin and speed. Looking at Mares’ fights, I don’t see that he can avoid Donaire’s left in a prolonged fight, much less survive it if hit cleanly – nobody has so far. Now, opponents like Nishioka and Srederenko have found out that Nonito’s right is just as deadly as his left – an ambidextrous nightmare for any fighter to face. Nonito by KO if Mares fights him.

Hey everyone, thanks for the comments. Some thoughts… Mares clearly won this fight – I had him winning eight rounds. Two of the judges were spot on, that third judge must have been smoking crack. I thought the ref did a good job overall, but the point deduction from Moreno was unnecessary. Both fighters had gotten rough at time throughout the match and the ref let them fight for the most part; I just felt he didn’t need to take a point. All in all, I think you have to consider Mares cracking the top ten p4p list now. I believe he’s ready for anyone in the division. Moreno should probably go back down to 118, he fits in better there.

Just watched it over again. If Moreno deserved to be duducted a point for pulling mares’ head down then…. how many points should’ve ref Caiz Jr taken from Mares for leading with his head and for the many low blows he landed on Moreno?? hmmmm… think about it. Yes, I believe that Mares won BUT… I suggest that we all should go back and COUNT the low blows thrown Mares. I don’t believe that Den-Kin and Caiz gave Moreno a fair shake. I picked Mares to win but I have to be objective and fair.

mares is a dirty fighter with no respect for his opponents or the rules of the sport.
a real ref with integrity and a good opponent will be his downfall.

like the fact that Mares called out Donaire. nice

And….. YES, 76 year old Judge Jen-Kin needs to retire from officiating. He’s been a center of making bad calls in the past and.. has been getting progressively worse!!

I don’t personally know Mares but I truelly don’t believe he would fight Arce at this declined stage in his career. I just don’t get how Donaire gets all thee props-the guy isn’t fighting the best-he’s tryn to fight action fights. He had a few very boring fights and made excuses-Mares would have made those boring fights Donaire had all action. He made Moreno fight hard all night long-does anyone really believe Donaire and Moreno would’ve had alot of action-hell no. Mares is fighting everyone while Donaire gets a bunch of old guys to fight. Donaire didn’t want to rematch Darchinyan even though Vic is good enough that Showtime and HBO always air his fights-Vic is always on TV-every fight-he’s been on alot longer than Doanire has so we know there’s more money in a Darchinyan fight than old shop warn Arce-he ran from the 118 tournament-ran from Rig and don’t want no parts of Mares-nothing but all farts for Donaire to fight while Mares fight primed good fighters

Moreno wanted to fight his layed back style of fighting and made it boring-but Mares made him fight hard all night and gave us a really good match. Mares is always in a good fight vs the best-he’s an action fighter with skills that doesn’t have to fight guys like Arce to make an exciting fight-Mares makes everyone fight harder and that why Donaire is running from him like Moreno was in the ring. Donaire ran from a Darchinyan rematch, the 118 tournament-and he clearly wants no parts of Rig or Mares-he’s str8 media hype. Donaire-Top Rank-please fight someone and quit with all these older and smaller fighters. The only guy Mares fought that wasn’t in his prime was Morel but he was still good other than that everyone else was very good and in their prime. Donaire is a fighter that made p4p strickly cause of the media-Donaire hasn’t earn all this hype off of Darchinyan and Montiel

Mares won the fight, it was not close. And you can’t pull a fighters head down. Against the rules. You pull a fighters head down as a defensive tactic and get hit low its your fault. I thought Moreno won some rounds but there is no rematch needed. Mares won that fight easy

Danny what are you talking about? The fight was not exciting. Period. There was like literally a handful of solid punches landed for either fighter on the head. Of course Mares can’t penetrate Moreno’s defense so where is the excitement coming from? Just the fact that Mares was aggressive the entire time doesn’t make it exciting. Like I said the only excitement came from hoping Mares or Moreno would actually do something to each other. And neither of them did really. It was disappointing.

“someone need to slap that judge until he passes out” Actually, Hecdog, that judge should be banned from ever officiating another fight. Pathetic, to say the least. Additionally, I thought the fight was much much closer. I also thought that both fighters did an awful lot of fouling. But I tell you what, Moreno is one slick, tough boxer. A rematch is in order. In Panama. Get rid of Ref Caiz too. I was totally disappointed in his performance.

Big Al – Glad to see some people aren’t afraid to call it like it is. Mares has his marketability working for him and that’s why he can foul up a storm and the other guy gets warned and punished if he even thinks about doing the same. I’ll be laughing when this dirty fighter finally gets stomped in the ring.

Posted November 11, 2012 9:55 am

We’re only upset cause Mares needs to stop bringing his cousins to ref his fights… the right guy probably did win but goddam if’n Mares aint the dirtiest little bastard around. and he always has the ref and one judge in his pocket no matter what happens inside the ring.

ROBERT, I believe that you’re wrong about Moreno. He’s gone on the road to win his title over previously undefeated Nehomar Cermeno, then considered a top three Bantam and repeated the victory in a rematch. He defended on the road against Mayhar Monshipour, which most all knowledgeable fans know and respect. He later went on the road to defeat Darchinyan and Lorenzo Parra in title defenses. Although he did lose Mares he’s still a top tier 122Lb’er, no doubt. Mares fought the perfect fight, did what he had to do. Props to him and all credit to Moreno. Peace to ROBERT

Hecdog you can cry all you want your not convincing no one that Moreno won. Now if you want to say Moreno could win a marathon over Mares ok I agree, I haven’t seen that much running since the olympics. I remember all the post u were writing about Moreno’s defense before the fight how great Moreno was lol Mares controlled the whole fight, its not even worth a rematch with Moreno it was to easy.

Posted November 11, 2012 8:18 am

Robert

Rich, if you want to see where I told you an everyone picking Moreno that Mares was going to win go back an read the comments from the day before the fight. So many experts were picking Moreno saying he couldn’t be hit his defense was so good, yeah of course it looks good when your fighting nobodys in panama. Over an over I was reading so many guys on here saying the samething the experts said lol when they probably never seen Moreno fight more then two times. Mares shows what kind of defense Moreno had once he fought a top dog in the US.

I picked Mares to win, but if the fight can be made, Donaire will ko him. Mares will beat Rigo. There is nobody in the 122 class that can stand up to Nonito.

Posted November 11, 2012 7:52 am

It was a bit closer than the scores indicaded but the right fighter got the decision. I didn’t think that Moreno successfully would handle the Mares’ pressure, he didn’t. I enjoyed it. Mares did stray low from time to time, as body punchers usually do.

Posted November 11, 2012 6:14 am

The Mad Scientist

I Knew Mares would win this fight and that naysayer would nitpick at his victory when he did..truth is alot of these fools picked against Mares to get clowned in this fight and now they’re all pissed off because Chemito was hardly competive an it burns them to give Abner his props cause they were so sure Mares didn’t have what it takes to beat Moreno the way he did..can you haters say, new entry in the top 10 P4P list..Lol!, war Mares!

maybe won i was at the fight we were all hoping they didnt steal the fight from the better stalker and boxer mares!! All the white writers wanted to place moreno as a top five pound for pound sorry we savages ruined that again!!!! ha ha al bernstein did you ever say anything about hopkins? get a grip the fight wasnt even close…. who was stunned and moved back during the fight not mares buddy!!! = winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Danny,Robert, were on here exactly was it you told us fool’s how Mares was going to beat Moreno…..

Posted November 11, 2012 5:03 am

Wow Mares made Moreno look like a fighter from panama that has only fought in American twice lol, whats that I see Moreno riding his bike right out of the pound 4 pound rankings, that spot is reserved for Abner Mares.

90% percent of you guys an the so called experts were picking Moreno lol, I told you foo’s Mares is proven he ain’t losing to a guy who only fought in America twice an bring a loss an draw from guys we never heard of. If you didn’t know by now Mares is the real deal if he wins or beats Nonito he a top guy in boxing for years to come, you foo’s bought into the hype of Running man Moreno lol.

Posted November 11, 2012 2:53 am

No doubt this was a exciting fight, the only way you could not think it was exciting is if you were going for Moreno. Mares was chasing Moreno all around the ring landing big shots after big shots, there is a reason everyone had Mares winning this fight it wasn’t even close, tuff fight yes for sure but Mares was the clear winner.

Posted November 11, 2012 2:43 am

Danny

Are you kidding the only way you could not think that was an exciting fight is if you were going for Moreno. This was a damn good fight with Mares pressing the action trying to catch Moreno on his bicycle.

Posted November 11, 2012 2:41 am

exciting? lol. that’s a stretch. the only thing exciting about it was that knockdown and then the rest we were just hoping something would happen. to be fair mares never took pressure off moreno. moreno deserved to lose because he didn’t do enough.

Posted November 11, 2012 2:33 am

You ppl keep crying eveytime a punch even looks low from Mares, you can cry all you want it won’t change anything just shows your a cry baby lol. The thing is Mares is a fighter, he didn’t throw Moreno down Moreno alot of times turns his back quick to Mares trying to run away an by the way Moreno runs alot. Simply put Mares was to good for Moreno so cry all you want Mares actually made Moreno look like the panama fighter trying to come to America an fight top fighters, Mares is the real deal only Nonito can beat him.

You know, I really used to like mares up to the agbeko fight. Thought the kid had a really great fighting spirit….was good for boxing. After that fight I was disgusted beyond belief…especially considering the darchynian fight & some of the dirty stuff I gave him the benefit of doubt for. But its like every fight w/ him is controversy. Dirty sh#t every time out. How does he throw a man down…grab & punch…punch in the back….push etc. Come in low….punch wen told to break & the other guy get a point taken?? Wtf?

Having said that….mares did his job…fought an ugly…wild…dirty fight w/ intensity & let Oscar do the rest. He out hustled chemito in this fight. He fought very sloppy but effectively by way of activity. The kd was legit. But that’s not hard to overcome in a fight…..jmm overcame 3 in one bout.

I think chemito didn’t adjust properly to meet mares` energy and output. He didn’t even realize wut was hurting mares in that rt hand to the body. He fights too methodically all the time. Guys have to learn wen to be tactically efficient & wen to get in the mud w/ a guy. Meet force w/ force. Moreno was up against it tonite w/ mares being at home & the champ & having a mega-fight looming. I thought he did some things well but he didn’t act as if he was at a disadvantage. I fault him as well for letting this fight get away from him. Abner wore him down some too.
