First thing Seth needs to learn.. Clinching skills.. That’s the first thing Banks mentioned in the interview, “Seth grabbed me around the waist.. He should have grabbed my arms.”
Mitchell was standing 6 feet away and heard that.. He said, “LIke Banks said—I should have grabbed his arms instead of grabbing him around the waist.” … It’s good to get tips from your opponent..

Archie Moore had more than 50 professional fights when Charley Burley beat the crap out of him, knocking him down 4 tiimes.. Arch went to Burley’s dressing rook and said, “What the Hell were you doing to me? I couldn’t even grab you.” Burley said, “I never let an opponent get under a punch. I’d rather miss a punch short than let a guy duck under and grab me.” … Moore never forgot that, and said he used it to KO Harold Johnson.

Power will off-times win ,as boxing is a game of power and skills. Johnathon Banks beat a decent fighter in Mitchell .I hope he decides to take about 5 more bouts before going head to head with the big boys though……God bless…..kenny weldon

It didn`t look to me like Mitchell was particularly getting outboxed, it isn`t as though Banks was landing at will, in fact Mitchell was pushing him back early, landed a nice body shot, and had banks looking uncomfortable. MItchell pushed him into a scrappy exchange and that is where you`d think his speed and power might work best but it looked quite an innocuous punhc that put him down. He was down in his last fight too so it doesn`t look great for his chin. Two things I`d probably like to see from Mitchell is more variety in the attack, he was getting predictable after round 1, and show a bit more movement on the way in – sometimes I look at him and I am not sure if he is trying to feint or to weave in past a jab and he ends up doing neither. He can get better, but he isn“t world champion material.

“NOT ALWAYS THE BESTT ATHLETS GREAT fighter”-Make sure you mention that to Joseph Herron. HE had the audacity to come on here a few weeks ago and say that ATHLETICISM is the most important factor in Boxing. I TOLD him that athleticism is the most important factor in AMATEURISM not Professional Boxing and I was CORRECT.

@ bolo punch.., If Mitchell-Banks was a repeat of Quarry-Shavers it’s not good for Mitchell.. Shavers lost again a fight later—to a loser—and finished with around 15 losses including several KO losses.. Mitchell is extremely reachable and hittable like Shavers.. When you’re a tremendous puncher you have a tendency to go for the KO. The best trainers preach, “Don’t look for the KO… Win each round… Take your time… Relax… Use more feints… Set him up with your jab… Be patient… Be smart… Use the ring… Use your feet.” .. A fight like this is good.. If you run over everybody you assume strength, firepower, and aggression are the keys to winning—and you need to learn they’re not.. But this fight was more like Quarry vs Mac Foster.. Foster didn’t absorb the lesson either. It’s extremely difficult to change your philosophy … Learning skills isn’t easy, and few do.

I didn’t recommend a drawing board for Williams and Chambers.. I always said Williams had no jab or straight left—and the reason was his stance was messed up..

Chambers is a good boxer. He boxed the Hell out of Peter and Dimitrenko. Wladimir K is a man naturally 40 pounds heavier, 6 inches taller, just as fast and skillful, with 3 X the strength and punching power … That’s not going to work for Chambers.

TARK says “Now it’s back to the drawing board for Seth . . .” hope it’s not the same drawing board that Tark recommended for the likes of previous favorites like Williams and Eddie Chambers. the problem with Tark’s drawing boards is that they are no more potent than the chalk dust that collects at the bottom tray and just as irrelevant. the primary factor that defeated Mitchell was his inexperience with being tagged by a flush powershot, which temporarily rattled and detached him from his carefully prepared chalkboard diagram. take it from a fight-fan who knows Fighters not some “expert” who relies on chalk, a chalkboard, and pompous gas: only experience and additional mileage is gonna get Mitchell past his most recent hump by learning not to panic or overreact to catching solid-shotS. also, the knowledge that being “favored” is a gambling term NOT an actual boxing talent, skill, or ring-advantage. if anything, it serves as extra motivation for his opponent not the favored fighter.

A very nice win for Banks, but I’d pay to see Mitchell anytime. He is still a great puncher and was one shot away from winning that fight even after getting off the floor. It was great to see heavyweights on U.S. television again.

It was a repeat of quarry vs shavers from 70 except that both were far better than those 2.

Sounds like to classy guys. I wish them both success, and really hope Seth can bounce back from this.

It WAS an upset Ernie Enema Schnozzle—and that’s NO crock.. Mitchell was bigger, stronger, a natural athlete, undefeated, and was expected to win.. Banks was suffering from jet lag, training disruptions, and double duty as chief trainer and boxer … Plus he already lost to former light heavyweight Tomasz Adamek.

Banks did his job and exposed Mitchell’s numerous weaknesses… Now it’s back to the drawing board for Seth, and I’m interested in seeing who Banks fights next.

The outcome being considered an upset is a crock. Banks knows how to fight and Seth is just a great athlete. The experience was the difference. Seth seems like a great person, but what a hill to climb with such a late start.

@ puglife, good comment. Banks might be the best U.S HW boxer right now, but I’d like to see him beat Povetkin, because Banks would be a worthy WBA champ. Banks has the world at his feet now, excellent trainer, and excellent boxer. Wlad and Emanuel taught him well.

Holmes was Ali’s sparring partner, but Holmes could out-jab and out-box Ali from the get-go… If you happen to be the world champion and there’s somebody who can beat you, it’s smart to keep him in your employ for as long as possible.. When Holmes went on his own it didn’t mean a shot at Ali … Ali even fought Leon Spinks, pretending Larry didn’t exist.

Choosing the right fights is a tremendous part of success in Boxing.. Good technical boxers and skillful counterpuncher—i.e. someone who can counter smartly with either hand—are not the guys to pit Seth against right now.. I hope MItchell doubles his resolve and really gets super angry about this loss.. He needs to shake things up with his team like Wladimir Klitschko did.. WK called Steward and others to check their availability.

I’m surprised anyone was surprised by the outcome of this fight. Not to take anything away from Seth, he’s pretty darn good for turning pro so late (at age 25) in life, but he was struggling to win in a few previous fights, nearly got beat in his prior fight, and his level of competition kept going up — you could sense he was fighting on the ragged edge of his skill set. Plus, his mindset is still that of the football linebacker — search and destroy. Seth is too eager to mix it up. In boxing you have to have patience — fight like it’s a chess match. You start throwing bombs too early and a good boxer/counter puncher will make you pay, dearly. And that’s just what Banks did, and he should have. When you’re sparring with THE champ (Klitschko), you learn these skills. Just ask Larry Holmes (who was Ali’s sparring partner).

A rematch with Adamek makes perfect sense. The winner can fight Povetkin. Consider it the jr. heavyweight division belt for blown-up cruisers. Let the K bros fight the Furies and Prices and Heleniuses of the world, guys their own size.

prideofvirginiabeach — While the Klitschko’s are still boxing, nobody is going to be a world champion. Unless its extra WBA belt or something and I think Banks could win that against Povetkin off his showing last night.

There is nothing wrong with Mitchell’s physical talent—except he obviously doesn’t have a steel chin—and 99.99% of boxers lack a Vitali Klitschko or Mariusz Wach type chin, which means you have to avoid smashing punches or you’ll get knocked out.. If you’re hit hard, and hurt, you can’t fire back in desperation—you clinch, box defensively, and get your equilibrium back before attacking again.. Mitchell-Banks was a replay of Khan-Garcia.. Amir Khan has been KO’s twice and is desperately working on clinching skills—something Mitchell also needs—but Mitchell also needs dozens of refinements to his stance, footwork, jabbing, feinting, defense, weapons—and his body needs to be leaner, harder, and more responsive … A lot to work on because “mistakes” didn’t beat him.

I wanna see Banks expose and shatter the other China Chinned American Hype Job named Deonatay Wilder sounds like a girls name!! Time for him to go Sleepy Time on HBO!!!

Disappointed because Mitchell is a local boy, but I can’t fault Banks for really giving in all in honor of Manny. Banks probably will never hold a world belt, but he put on one hell of an upset.

Gonzo the Dragonborn

Very pleased for Banks, especially after what happened with Manny the other week. Banks is a nice guy and a decent fighter. I really can’t see him beating any of the top guys in the division though. Hopefully he gets a crack at one of the champions and earns himself a nice little pay day out of it though. Mitchell seems like a good guy too and he has nothing to be ashamed of.. coming that late into the sport never works out well for anyone. The imbeciles who were hyping him up as a legitimate threat to the Klitschkos, or even worse, a Klitschko conquror, should be ashamed of themselves for displaying such hitherto levels of stoopid though. lol

Classy comments by both guys, nice to see professional fighters behaving like professionals. As for Mitchell, he is not necessarily finished, though I’m pretty positive he win never be a world champion. He is just to chinny and doesn’t have natural fighter instincts due to taking up the sport so late in life. Banks now has a chance to make himself some decent money, though he too will never be champ, as he is a tad small and doesn’t seem to have the natural strength required to reach the top. Best wishes to both fighters.

Mo-Box

I had no doubt about it. Banks brought in a fresh & massive school background in the ring intesively sparring with Wlad, sparring with best HW of this era. No wonder he mowed Mitchell. I’d say if he is chosen as a main sparring partner for Wlad he’d give technical trouble to most of top 10-20 HWs not named Klitschko, maybe not beat them all, but give them hands-full even if losing. Big respect to Banks who like Wlad dedicated this fight for Steward, they really were one team. I’m sure mr. Steward is smiling and feels honored right now. God bless!

I have never thought much of Banks. Very shocking that he took out Seth. Guess I need to change my assessment of Banks.

Posted November 18, 2012 2:20 pm

Seth is not out of the mix. He has fought possibly one of the best HW “boxers” in USA, but not a real heavy handed fighter. Banks-Adamek was a close fight until Adamek closed it out. Seth does not have to worry about that zero anymore and concentrate on boxing. USA Heavyweight tournament would be in order before they send anyone else over to fight a european. If Banks is the best, there is no real hope in the USA HW’s against any european Top HW. Wilder is one punch from being exposed.

kosciuszko

How fecked up could this victory prove to be? Banks, Wladimir Klitscko’s trainer, is fast making a half decent name for himself in the HW division, especially after this tidy victory, and could be not far off being in line to face his student. Whether Banks and Klitschko would get it on is another matter though…
