I beg to differ that past boxers were more sluggers than technical boxers. The reason they received so much physical damage was they fought almost all the time. Their gym workouts were more brutal than the actual fights and if you were like me, I use to go to some of those gyms and watch for free. Boxers today are trying to be more scientific cross training and hiring exercise physiologist thinking those newer methods would make them better. Road work should be done outside in the winter with 12 inches on snow on the ground and not on a thread mill in side a gym. Too bad so many trainers have died and now we have guys with college degrees in exercise physiology and nutrition. The older methods were better and the proof is in the pudding. Look at boxing today.

My first favorite fighter when I was growing up. I was so saddened when he was robbed against Ali seeing him weeping in the ring. In the aftermath one sports writer put it: “Boxing was better served with Ali as it’s champion”. The world will be better served with Ken still with us. Get well K.N. and no robberies this time ok?

God bless Ken Norton. He was a fierce warrior inside the ring and is a class person. He never bad mouthed anyone he fought, but man could he came to fight. He was built like a truck also. Hope the champ gets well soon.

I will always remember the fight Norton had with Cooney. Cooney knocked Norton into submission in about 54 seconds.

I mean no disrespect when I say this…Fighters of the past were more sluggers than technical fighters. I think they took alot of punishment back in them days, which is also why the fans think much more of that era. I doubt very much that we will here about the Klitschkos getting Parkinsons or having strokes due to punishment sustained during their boxing career. Not trying to use Norton’s unfortunate situation as an excuse to praise modern day fighters, but it seems as though there may be a pattern here.

I was in Yankee Stadium on Sept. 28, 1976 for the Norton/Ali title fight, sitting up in the cheap seats. To be honest, it was a rather slow fight with Ken fighting cautiously. Referee Arthur Mercante Sr. scored the fight 8 rounds for Ali, 6 rounds to Norton and 1 round even. Years later, I bumped into Mercante on the train and we talked boxing. Mercante was approachable and a total gentleman. I asked him if he remembered how he scored the Norton/Ali fight. “I really don’t remember”, Arthur replied. I told him that he scored the fight the same way he scored the Ali/Frazier fight; 8-6-1. He smiled and said, “You’ve got a good memory.”

I hope Norton survives this. This man fought guys like Ali, Shavers, Holmes, Cooney… and was Joe Frazier´s sparring partner! So, his heart and toughness are a given.
