Fight Aficianado says, “Cotto will stalk and Trout will run.” … My feeling is it’s not going to be a fight where Cotto is attacking, so much as a Boxing match. These guys are both boxers with good jabs. Now, if it’s fairly close Trout will have to be more aggressive, and if Trout takes an obviously lead Cotto will have to be more aggessive. Trout needs to win big. Cotto needs to at least keep it even and he will get the nod.Posted December 1, 2012 1:25 am
Cotto by stoppage.Posted November 30, 2012 9:44 pm
There’s nothing to analyze. Cotto will stalk and Trout will run. Cotto wins regardless the question is simply by KO or UD? I say KO but that would require Trout to actually fight at some point. Dude may just run for his life.Posted November 30, 2012 9:28 pm
Cotto has only lost to Manny, Floyd, and a loaded gloved Margarito which was roundly avenged. He beat (very close) Shane Mosley who hits light a truck, is fast, and tough. He simply destroyed the fast handed, but light punching and undersized Paulie M. He KO’d ChopChop after having to power through some diversity in that fight.
I hope this guy Trout come with the intention to outbox Cotto, Cotto at his best when he is the heat seeking missile, fighters that stand up to him are the ones that give him problems, that said, Cotto will go to the body early and frequently to slow him down, Cotto by dec or late stoppage.Posted November 30, 2012 8:42 pm
Agreed on all counts psy. Cotto only loses to the very, very best and is on his way to a hall-of-fame career. Trout is up and coming, and definitely hungry and seemingly technically talented, but I don’t see any particular strengths (other than natural size) that he has over Cotto at this point.
I am excited about this fight, as I am about most Cotto fights because he is rarely in a bad fight (it has happened, but it is rare), and perhaps that Trout’s strategy. That Devlin Rodriguez fight with Trout was slow and boring and he won (and Delvin is rarely in slow and boring fights). Trout seems to have a way of neutralizing exchanges. But, Delvin was able to land a few solid rights against Austin, and I can’t help but think if those were Cotto shots it would have been different. Perhaps Austin fights “to the level” of his opponent.
OTOH, if Cotto is developing some ring wear, a guy like Trout could start exposing it.
So, to me this is a true test for both guys: Can Trout fight at the elite level? and.. Is Cotto starting to slide?
If this fight was 5 years ago, I can’t help but think people would be saying: “Trout’s manager should be fired for making a fight that will put his fighter on a stretcher.”
No so sure about the handspeed advantage there… I think Cotto has underrated hand speed. After all, he was able to touch Mayweather with some heat, just not enough due to May’s speed and reflexes. He also touched the hell out of Paulie (another fast fighter) and I’m still not sure what kept Pac from wobbling with some of Cotto’s quick counters.
Hard to argue with that logic, actually. Boxing is a business, and I don’t think many fans have this in their minds when analyzing fights and strategy.Posted November 30, 2012 7:45 pm
Cotto’s timing, jab and footwork are superb, this idea that Trout’s best chance is to box on the outside is bizarre. Cotto’s loses came against guys who get the better of him up close and during exchanges.
MMendoza- Agree with the swan song thing. He’s mentioned retirement in several interviews lately. Hopefully he’ll call it a career sooner rather than later.Posted November 30, 2012 2:54 pm
If any fight could be won only on courage alone, Cotto would definitely score a grand slam. Based on skills, Cotto will box and move for a decision win. My only worry about Cotto is that he’s showing more and more a sad type of introspection which in my opinion is no good for a boxing career. It’s almost like he’s already in the “swan song” mentality. Having said that, Cotto just has way too much experience to throw away this fight.Posted November 30, 2012 2:29 pm
Trout has the height, hand speed and jab which will be to his advantage as long as he moves to his right to avoid cotto’s left hook. If trout can stay on the outside and pepper cotto with jabs and cotto gets marked and cut easily which trout could exploit. I will go with trout via decision over cotto because this guy is young, hungerier and wants to introduce himself big in the world of boxing and get great future fights.Posted November 30, 2012 12:30 pm
Huh that’s so weird seeing Paulie interview Cotto.Posted November 30, 2012 12:12 pm
Trout has to be extremely active and box his ass off. He has to pepper Cotto with jabs and straight lefts. Cotto is more a boxer and jabber than a brawler. Trout needs to move to his left away from Cotto’s left hook, but he needs to move at least 30% of the time to his right and be very active with his jab and straight right when he does—because Pacquiao showed a southpaw can score on MC very effectively this way. Pac did get that ear doing that so he ran into Cotto’s left hook, but scored tons of punches. When Trout moves right but he’s going to be attacked, so he really needs to drive that straight left hand quickly and avoid the counter hook. Don’t put too much on the straight left and crack them in with extreme quickness so you avoid the left hook counter. Corley an Judah got Cotto with the right hook and left upprecut … You’re tall, so judicious use of those will help.Posted November 29, 2012 11:58 pm
Sorry for the typos btw…Posted November 29, 2012 11:04 pm
Here’s the Golden Boy plan: Feed Trout to Cotto so they can make Canelo-Cotto in May. Canelo is a bigger, stronger, younger version of Cotto and should really beat him at this point. Have Canelo/Mayweather at the end of next year thinking that by then Canelo will be too much for Mayweather at 154. Move Canelo up to 150 and fight a 40 year old Sergio Martinez… BOOM, cashed in.
So you are accusing Golden Boy of fixing the judges.Posted November 29, 2012 9:41 pm
I like Malinaggi, he’s very knowledgable as a commentator.Posted November 29, 2012 9:05 pm
Anytime someone says that someone is too strong I throw his comment out the window. Being too strong doesn’t WIN Fights. Being too SKILLED or too SMART does. If being too strong WON Fights then Foreman would have defeated Ali. Ruiz would have demolished Jones Jr.Posted November 29, 2012 8:00 pm
Cotto by Knockout .. Cotto is to strong he’ll rip through TroutPosted November 29, 2012 7:45 pm
Trout is going to surprise a lot of people. The great Miguel Cotto will retire after this one. Trout is going to out box and bruise up Cotto for a unanimous 12 round decision, and maybe even a late round stoppage. You can only go to the well so many times, and fighting a bigger, younger guy that has good speed and a southpaw is a recipe for disaster for Cotto. Cotto’s last hurrah was against Floyd, but not this time. He’s going to lose this. At least I’ll get the chance to see the Puerto Rican legend one more time, and I hope he does well because he’s always been a class guy inside and outside the ring. One of my favorite all time fighters that always gives 100%. Unfortunately, the punches add up and once you reach your mid thirties and beyond, you’re never the same, and it’s always against a guy that isn’t very impressive, and no one gives him much of a chance. That guy is Austin Trout.Posted November 29, 2012 7:01 pm
Last week Hatton lost and cried like a baby. Miguel Cotto got beaten to a pulp twice, and he came back and regained Championships and gave Mayweather a lot of trouble. Everybody thought Cotto was done after the Pacquiao fight. What a Champion.Posted November 29, 2012 6:12 pm
Trout is a talented fighter, but even if M/C is a bit past his prime, I believe the sad faced Purto Rican has enough left in his tank to convincingly beat this young man.Posted November 29, 2012 6:01 pm
Actually I’m not. Cotto is undefeated at MSG. Trout is the champ and a Golden Boy guy. Golden Boy also has Saul Alvarez in their stable. Cotto loses, the Alvarez fight is off. He wins and it’s on. trout loses and he loses his belt and the ) in the loss column. A draw works for all involved. Everyone’s happy.Posted November 29, 2012 5:45 pm
Cotto has been hit to much. He can barely talkPosted November 29, 2012 5:38 pm
cotto will win this. trout is nothing special.Posted November 29, 2012 4:31 pm
Cotto should win this. Trout is very much an unknown quantity but he hasn’t faced an elite fighter yet. His elusive style will most likely not serve him well as Cotto is very much a boxer-puncher who has a fantastic jab that allows him to get into his range. Should be interesting as I think Trout is a pretty smart fighter but I think the difference in class will eventually show in Cotto’s favor.Posted November 29, 2012 3:55 pm
There’s only so much abuse a brain can take…Posted November 29, 2012 3:19 pm
Absolutely no need for Cotto to keep fighting, no need whatsoever; win or lose this fight, he should retire & enjoy his family & his millions…Posted November 29, 2012 3:12 pm
C’mon, let’s be serious. Who has this kid Trout ever faced? His record is a long list of bums. I am not saying he is bad, I am just saying he has never faced anyone even slightly relevant. Cotto is in a different category and found it convenient that a nobody with a very questionable record is currently holding a world title belt in his same weight division.Posted November 29, 2012 2:43 pm
In order for Cotto to win he has to get this kid out of there early. If it goes deep lets say in the championship rounds; I see Trout winning.Posted November 29, 2012 2:07 pm
Cotto made a statement. To me he renew himself with that Mayweather fight.Posted November 29, 2012 2:01 pm
while cotto has worlds of experience at what point does trout receive some recognition? trout has been largely under the radar due to the fact that no one has wanted to fight him… as far as cotto going to the body and breaking him down? crazy!! cotto is not gonna be able to get near him.. keep the fight in the center of the ring and trout picks cotto apart all nite..Posted November 29, 2012 1:46 pm
Trout takes it by decisionPosted November 29, 2012 1:23 pm
