If skill beats size why doesn’t Mayweather fight Sergio Martinez Boxtramoron ? Or better yet Wlad Klitschko ?

As a matter of FACT hey LOOK!!!! LOOK!!!! at the “Austin Trout shows his mettle in the Garden…” article where I broke down the difference in Floyd’s Defensive SKILL level and Trouts. The analysis was SO spot ON that it made Hissydalgo RUN like a SISSY.

By the way Trout’s SKILLS and Boxing IQ combined are GREATER than Cotto’s. And that’s why he WON. But Trout’s SKILLS and Boxing IQ are LESSER than Floyd’s.

There goes Haterdalgo again, always Hating but never NOT ONCE Congratulating. Why?? Because he Hates MY GREATNESS….Haterdalgo doesn’t know WHAT I DO or what I DON’T know nor does he know what I HAVE or have NOT done. Also his reading SKILLS are terribly POOR. Not only have I broken down one Fight I’ve broken dow n PLENTY including the one where he was touting Ortiz and I predicted that Ortiz would be in trouble at the end of 4 and I was CORRECT…..Haterdalgo hates ME SO MUCH that he just made two posts about ME but with NO Boxing points. IF you want to write about ME then go to TMZ.com. We talk about Boxing HERE. Hating ME is your personal matter that has nothing to DO with Boxing. Go SEE Dr. Phil about that.

There goes Braggadamus again, always using the word “skills” but he has never–NOT ONCE–technically described how one fighter beat another or how one could beat another. Why? Because Braggadamus doesn’t really know anything about boxing. He’s never boxed in his life. Never had a boxer’s workout, never trained for a boxing match. Never trained or coached a boxer, and doesn’t personally know one single professional boxer. Or amateur for that matter. Not one. Yet he claims he’s “the greatest.” Braggadamus couldn’t analyze a fight if his life depended on it. However, he does like to blow himself.

Trout is good! and he through that jab enough to give Cotto problems he also showed his power of pushing Cotto off him. It was good fight Cotto really didn’t do enough and in the later rounds he almost go knocked out. I love his Rhythm though, Cotto is fine fighter.
Look forward to seeing Trout again.

Trout is ok but cotto lost the fight . cotto seemed a lot slower than when he fought Floyd . maybe because trout moved around a lot unlike Floyd.if he overtrained that’s one thing but if not that he shoud retire. he cannot beat the top fighters in that class and might actually get another paceman type beat down which will force him to retire.

Chavez Jr. had the weight, size, and age advantage and LOST. SKILLS is the most important factor in Boxing. IF you don’t remember anything else remember THAT.

Joe – Thanks for the reply, you are right, time will reveal all. I finally got around to listening to this weekends wrap, another fine show. Ronnie, as always, offers excellent insight as well. Trout may deserve the Canello bout based on the win, but he has yet to earn it based on his draw. I hate to say it, but I think that even now, Cotto vs Canello, while not as challenging a fight, is a more exciting “event”. Yes, its Zahir all over again, but you can’t argue with PPV numbers. Plus now I am starting to get amped for some of the other potential match ups you guys were discussing for Trout. No need to throw these two young guns into the ring together right now; if they are the last two men standing at 154 the fight will make itself (I hope).

Like Floyd Mayweather Tark ? Trout beat Cotto easier than Floyd did . Lets see Floyd fight Trout. ;)

Floyd avoids skilled boxers with a jab like the plague. It’s hard to counterpunch against a good boxer with an a grade jab, that’s why Floyd hasn’t fought any :)

Thanks for the kind words, Webster.

You could be right on your assessment of both Cotto and Trout…but you could also be wrong. Only time can tell us this. Before the Mayweather bout, everyone thought Cotto was washed up and Money was going to kill him.

We found out otherwise. What are my three favorite words on the show?

Judge slowly, brother!!

Thanks for reading and listening, Webster!!

“But lets face it, he had a weight advantage, a size advantage, and an age advantage.”-SO WHAT??? Maybe you’re new to Boxing but those advantages are not the MAIN advantage. The MAIN advantage in Boxing is the SKILLS advantage and that’s why Trout WON. His Defensive and Offensive SKILLS were BETTER than Cotto’s….Chavez Jr. had the weight, size, and age advantages vs. Martinez and still LOST because the SKILLS advantage TRUMPS those advantages. IF Cotto had more SKILLS than Trout he would have WON.

Joe – You are always a good read and a blast to listen too. However, let’s not get too excited about the results of this fight. As soon as they flashed the tale of the tape it was pretty clear that we had a blown up welter weight who best days were long gone against what is essentially a solid middleweight in his prime. The thing I give Trout real props for is not wilting in the spotlight. But lets face it, he had a weight advantage, a size advantage, and an age advantage. Plus he has the good fortune of not having been brutally beaten to a pulp. Cotto’s face started to mark up during the ring walk. Miguel is a balls to the walls fighter and I give him much respect, but his team really should have had him cash out his chips in a PPV against Canello.

Hidalgo it was just that Cotto hit him it was the positions he caught him in. Cotto was able to snap Trouts head repeatedly because he would catch Trout blindsighted or flatfooted or both. Guys like Canelo and GGG dont have the timing and skill level that Cotto has but if they catch Trout in similar fashion he wont survive.

MNboxingFAN – Sean

Cotto had some great fights recently above 150lbs … that’s after most people said he should retire too! So I don’t blame him for fighting there, but his fights were against guys moving up themselves from lower weight classes and guys who should be retired in some cases (Mayorga). I can’t say he’s overmatched at 154lbs though when someone like Floyd Mayweather Jr. says that Cotto was his toughest fight and they fought at 151lbs. So what’s three pounds? Yes Trout is naturally bigger and stronger, but I think Cotto could’ve beaten him and should’ve beaten him. Cotto fought a stupid fight. Plain and simple. That and Trout fought a smart fight. Give credit where it’s due. Cotto isn’t finished, but I don’t see him as a Champ again. Time will tell.

Might be time for Cotto to hand them up. Cotto’s resume speaks for itself. The guy has fought everyone & gave career beatings to several top fighters as well as taking some brutal beatings himself. Trout vs. Canelo is now the most logical match up. Hopefully it happens in the next year

Cotto is overmatched at 154 by the top guys plain and simple..now let’s get on with the million dollar beatdown so we can put that charade behind us already and move on to some more meaningful fights for Canelo.

I had picked Cotto by stoppage via round 7 but boy did Trout surprise me. Cotto’s long past his best and he looked like he couldn’t pull the trigger.

All credit to Trout however…the guy can fight and showed he can mix it up when he has to. That said I don’t agree that Austin Trout is the best kept secret in boxing…not even close.

Trout is a very solid boxer no doubt and one that be a problem for anyone who fights him. However I see Trout losing to the top guys in his division as well as those just above and below his weight class. Had Cotto been busier in this fight Trout may have been stopped. Cotto caught him a number of times with some very good shots, he just wasn’t throwing more than one or two at a time.

I hope Trout vs Canelo is made. That will be an interesting fight and show us but both men are really capable of.

I think that the best money fight now for Cotto would be a Cotto vs Canelo Mex vs PR matchup.. and it the younger Canelo beats Cotto so be it.. Cotto has just not been the same Old Cotto and especially once he got the Cuban Trainer who I believe has been all wrong for Cotto, nothing against the Cuban Trainer but his stong area is Boxing Skills.. he doesn’t have that Pro Style that made Cotto a top guy.. Cotto should bring back his Uncle and setup a Canelo fight…

te tumbo

even a cursory review of Cotto’s 154lb ring-resume revealed that he lacked confidence at that weight. being bullied by a bigger and natural middle was inevitable. however, Cotto’s stature will continue to place him in Canelo’s bracket. not interested in watching Mayweather spoil the fun at 154lbs (Again) but i’m sure that “Money” will decide that situation. ultimately, i want to watch Alvarez face them all but why should he do all the heavy-lifting? accordingly, “Dear Santa”, while Canelo is disposing of Trout (Mayweather? Cotto?), Lara should rematch Molina; Vanes should face Thurman; and Kirkland should rematch Angulo. unfortunately, i suspect that too many fight-fans on the “naughty” list will preclude this Christmas miracle.

Canelo should man up, grow a pair, stop cherry picking and fight Trout next. Trout is the champion so there’s no need for Canelo as some believe should fight Cotto. While the fight on paper looks good, the right thing to do is fight Trout. Trout is a champion and so is Canelo so it only makes perfect sense. If he beats Trout, then call out Cotto, but not before.
On another note, Trout performed really well, not outstanding or exceptional, just very very good. It did the job and the better man won that night. In other words, nothing to write home about. I think Pacman and hands of cement did a better job tagging Cotto than did Trout. While every fighter is beatable, Trout’s tenure as champion will not be long lived unfortunately.

Rosado is a great guy but he hasn’t fought anyone since Angulo stopped him in 2—yet he says Golovkin has no defense and he’s certain to score a massive KO because he’s bigger and taller. Gabe has to be the most delusional man in Boxing.

Trout fighting Golovkin would obviously be a stupid move that could turn his career south. AT has to hold out for the Canelo matchup and turn up the heat for the fight. He deserves the fight … and boxing writers need to support his bid.

Arrogant fighters who duck the best matchups need to be called out — early and often.

If he hit Trout it wasn’t because of Trout’s poor defense, it was because of Cotto’s vast skill. Cotto may not have beat Mayweather, but he smashed Floyd’s nose. A Canelo win over Cotto will do as much for Alvarez as Trout’s win over Cotto did for him. Alvarez fighting Cotto makes sense to me and I don’t think GBP needs to, or will, make any excuses to make the Alvarez/Cotto fight happen. Besides, now that Cotto didn’t win the title, he will likely be more than will to fight Alvarez as he has no title to lose.

Since when does Miguel have to be a role model? Or any athlete for that matter? Cotto was disgusted in his loss to Mayweather and disgusted in his loss to Trout. Why? Going into the fights he was confident he would beat both men. But he didn’t. Sure, we expect star athletes to be role models because they get so much exposure and are so well known, but the people who are the real role models for their children are their parents–not some demi-god on the screen, or in the ring. Miguel walked over, gave Austin a hug, a pat, and a congratulations–very professional, very sincere. He had nothing to say to the media so he left the arena. Besides, why would Miguel want to answer questions like “Why do you think you lost? You’ve lost to Pacquiao, Mayweather, and now Trout. Will you consider retiring? What are your plans after this fight?” Miguel was smart to walk away silent. He’s never been a complainer, and he never will be. What he did after the fight will be forgotten long before what he did in the fight.

I like the fact that Trout don’t care where he fights & would surely take on Canelo in Mexico if required. Alvarez has been sounding off that he wants legendary status & be the #1 in the World @ 154Lb, but to achieve that he’s gotta fight the best & right now the best fight out there is Trout. (I’m not sure if PBF is in the equation @ light-middleweight or if he’s fighting @ 147). if Canelo/Trout doesn’t come off it would be a travesty, but not the end of the World. Trout could always take a trip to Europe & take on EBU champion Rabchenko the ca$h would be good.

Anyone else see that snorebore cautious performance in his last bout vs Rodriguez? Or was last night everyone’s first look at Trout? Now, Trout, whom I respect just beat a shop worn Cotto. It was not the size. Cotto is a legitimate 154. But he is not at the top of that division. Cotto has never been at the top of his division. If you want a good fight with Cotto in it with someone on his level, let’s have Cotto and Hatton fight each other in a fight that should have taken place 5 years ago. I don’t Trout has any chance against Canelo. Even though Trout is more skilled, it is not a gimme that he’d beat Kirkland, Angulo, or Thurman.

REM…. If 100 people score a fight they’re not all going to have the same score. It is not your score that counts but the score of the judges, who are supposed to have expertise. If the judges come up with a score that is fairly close to the consensus of writers and fans it’s received well by the public—and that’s what happened in this fight. Trout being a bigger 154 pounds is not an issue. They both chose to fight at 154. Cotto having more wear and tear from ring wars is not a factor. He’s not the only 32-year-old fighter with around 40 fights … Not every fight is going to be your peak career best fight ever. You can keep fighting as Cotto wants to do, or you can retire if you think you’re slipping. MC has 3 legitimate losses and he was going for another world title. He’s an ATG so Canelo’s people can’t say Trout never beat anyone and there’s no reason to fight him … although they’ll probably say that anyway or come up with another excuse to avoid Trout.

Canelo has a lot to worry about… He was there at the fight, but didn’t stick around to answer questions about Trout or confront Trout. I’d be amazed if he did the right thing and fought Trout. Everyone at Goldenboy was hoping for a Cotto win, and will still look for an excuse to fight Cotto. They would also love to get a Mayweather fight.

Or why wouldn’t they fight Lara, Angulo, Kirkland, Bundrage, or some other opponent? They’ll ask that famous old question that dodgers ask—who did Trout ever beat?

Posted December 2, 2012 8:54 pm

REM

Tark in a fight like this with a significant size difference its expected that the bigger mans punch will do more damage punch for punch that doesnt necessarily mean that hes landing the cleaner punches. Its no secret that at this point in his career Cottos face swells easily the score difference in this fight was 115-113 and no bigger.

Posted December 2, 2012 8:51 pm

TARK

The 10-point must system doesn’t give a true measurement of punches landed and damage done. If you outscore your opponent 21 to 13 and land the harder cleaner shots you take a round by one point. After the fight Trout was unmarked. He looked like a white collar worker on lunch break. Cotto was well beaten up because he absorbed far more punishment.

The 119-109 score was inattentive I’d say. Trout wasn’t that dominant. But Steve Farhood, Brian Kenny, and the 2 judges who scored the fight 117-111 all hit the mark.

I was a little surprised by the judging because it often seems like they’re watching a different fight or they’re all 3 watching different fights. This time they did a good job.

Posted December 2, 2012 8:29 pm

Trouts defense simply isnt that good he got hit with shots from Cotto he didnt see and even though Canelo isnt as crafty and skilled as Cotto hes good enough to penetrate Trouts defense also. If Canelo catches him blindsighted like that Trout can find himself in serious trouble.

I’m glad you had a good time, REM…that’s what it’s al about!!

Joseph lol yeah but he gave me many moments to cheer. 1 things for sure i was very pleased with his performance he was very cagey and crafty against the big young champ.

geez…i sonder who you were cheering for last night, REM…lol

Cotto is a warrior and would be offended by all the boneheads on here making excuses for him. He lost a close fight and that’s that. You can’t fix stupid, but have a look at the consensus of sports writers ringside scorecards and the punch stats, since your own eyes and powers of reasoning seem to be failing you.

what impress me by trout is his conditions he wasn tired at all he was still fresh in the last round he was poise didn panic when cotto attack

Posted December 2, 2012 7:10 pm

p.s. Trout must have outweighted cotto by at least 15 pounds and still didnt win it

Posted December 2, 2012 7:09 pm

im not going to reply to any replys but cotto won that fight and this article is utter BS

Lol Joseph i was at the fight last night pretty close to the ring and Cotto had us going crazy consistently knocking sweat off of Trouts head into the crowd. Trout had good moments but didnt land eye popping punches like that. Then this morning i watched it on tv had Cotto winning rd 1 due to ring generalship and well timed punches snapping Trouts head. Trout landed 1 powershot and some straight bodyshots but Cotto looked better. Rd 2 to Trout he outworked Cotto. Rd 3 to Cotto it was close but again Cottos well timed shots got him the round but it couldve went either way. Rds 4,5 and 6 Cotto put on a clinic stopping Trout in his tracks with perfectly timed shots blasting Trouts sweat into the crowd Trout workrate didnt overcome that. Rd 7 more of the same only Cottos slowing down and Trouts size difference and workrate starts coming into play. 8,9 and 10 Trout now starts putting on his own clinic just overwhelming Cotto no question. Rd 11 Cotto musters up all he has left and hits Trout with a couple more welltimed headsnappers that imo outscored Trouts workrate. Round 12 all Trout Cottos running on empty and the younger bigger man has much more left. It should be taken into consideration that the swelling on Cottos face was the result of facing a bigger stronger man but Cotto landed far more telling punches.

Closer than those idiot judges had it, it wasn’t dominant but Trout did more than Cotto to win. Trout was definitely the bigger man but was surprise that he doesn’t have that much power. I feel Cotto took him lightly and well,he lost.

Anyone who actually thinks Cotto won should get their eyes checked. The dude had his moments and it was a close fight (8-4, 7-5 if you’re really generous to Cotto), but he’s clearly on the decline. Might as well cash out vs. Canelo next if they can actually sell it to the public, though it would make Canelo look weak for ducking Trout.

Happy for Trout, he deserved the decision, though I didn’t think it was as wide as the judges did. Canelo will avoid him, which is too bad. Best thing for Trout is to stay busy against the best comp he can get matched with. He’s got Haymon on his side, so that should help. Realistically, wouldn’t mind seeing him matched up next with Bundrage (doesn’t he still have some kind of belt?). Maybe if Trout and Bundrage unify their titles on HBO or Showtime they might get traction toward a mega-matchup with Canelo (who’s all about reward over risk these days and is carefully matched).

Leon and REM, you guys are smoking some serious crack!!

Posted December 2, 2012 6:31 pm

Joseph Herron

You sure about that, Deven? Floyd has never really been a runner. What makes you think Floyd has lost a step?

Posted December 2, 2012 6:29 pm

REM

Imo Cottos performance against Trout was way better than against Floyd. Through the first 7 rds Cotto landed tons off well timed powershots upstairs and against Floyd mostly just well timed hard jabs with a handful of right crosses and 1or 2 left hooks. Ima have to walk this road alone but the best i can give Trout was a draw last night.

Posted December 2, 2012 6:24 pm

Nicholas, put the crack pipe down. Powder punching trout poses zero threat to Floyd. The fool can’t punch to save his ass, plus Mayweather is too good and fast for him. How is a joker w 14 ko’s going to give Mayweather a challenge?

Posted December 2, 2012 6:18 pm

Joseph, so Floyd let cotto beat on him by design. how dum. Floyd does not move like he use to if you h
ave not noticed by his recent fights.

Posted December 2, 2012 6:14 pm

Leon B. Little

Trout is not that great beating wahed up Cotto. Salmon boy gets ko’d by ggg, Martinez, pac man, Marquez, and Canelli. Even hatton beats him

If they put the Canelo/cotto fight together, cotto will be destroyed unfortunately. I hope for cottos sake they do not.

I like Austin, and I hope he does unify the jr. middleweight division title.

Posted December 2, 2012 6:09 pm

This is a good win for trout, more fans will recognise his name and hes got options of moving up in weight if he cant immediately get the fights he wants. Unfortunately cotto wasnt undefeated hed already lost three times before trout, and will likely lose one more time vs alvarez before he retires. But still a positive breakthrough

Posted December 2, 2012 6:09 pm

Joseph Herron

Deven, really? He did better against Floyd because PBF let him, huh?

Posted December 2, 2012 6:04 pm

deven

Come on guy. trout is not that good. cotto has beaten beater fighters than trout in his prime. he is just not the same fighter which is why trout won. cotto is so slow and cannot throw punches when needed. he did better against Floyd because Floyd did not run around.

Posted December 2, 2012 6:03 pm

REM

Ouch people wanna c Floyd vs Trout who is bigger and stronger than Cotto. Cotto is bigger, stronger and hits harder than Floyd and he blasted Trout with lead hooks all night yet didn’t leave a mark. Not fair to Floyd and im no Floyd fan. The way Cotto was able to hit Trout with well timed lead hooks Trout might struggle with other top fighters at 154 he wont be able to absorb those shots so well from an Alvarez and definitely not from GGG.

Posted December 2, 2012 6:00 pm

Cutman

Cotto was always a small jr middleweight which is why some fans/critics were shocked when he chose a much BIGGER guy in trout. Especially in the last stage of his career. Trouts not just tall but hes really broad, i remember thinking ‘holy cow’ when comparing him with cotto at the weigh in. And trouts extremely good at fighting tall and utilising a bigger man advantages, i was pretty darn surprised when cotto took this fight. Theres ‘no doubt’ that trout is a good fighter and hes got props now that he has that big name on his resume. He’ll make a comfortable middleweight so why bother sticking around at jr if everyone keeps avoiding him?

Posted December 2, 2012 5:57 pm

PEEJ

Floyd is not a 154lb fighter. Notice the only 2 fighters he fought at that weight class both had moved up to that weight class. Floyd is a 147lb fighter

I’m referring to a fight with Triple G!!

if canelo still fight cotto after he lost i lose some respecr for canelo i mean cotto is pretty much done what the point of canelo fighting him now besides of being a money fight trout deserve his shot he earn it canelo should fight trout two young fighters in there prime to unifie for the belts

Posted December 2, 2012 5:07 pm

Joseph Herron

What makes me even more upset is a fighter like K9 Bundrage who really isn’t a big ticket seller outside of Detroit, yet he’s also holding the division hostage and turning down everyone within the top 15. He should step up and unify the division with Austin Trout…the winner fights the winner of Canelo vs. Floyd Jr.

yeah trout got a chance against gennady golovkin cause of his skills and slickness but gennady aint no cotto tho i mean he bigger then cotto punch much harder and much stronger but it be a great fight to watch tho a boxer vs a puncher fight

I meant “Left”. Southpaws can be confusing.

hookoffthejab

i really hope that cotto retires canelo will make a mess of cotto would be horrible to watch his family crying at ring side not to mention that austin trout career reminds me of bhops fought mainly in obscurity going in to other fighters backyards and battling against good boxers for average money and little fanfare
trout and the fans deserve to see canelo fight a legit 154 fighter (even if its just once) so fingers crossed trout canelo happens ..nO doubt …

Posted December 2, 2012 5:02 pm

hookoffthejab

the numbers cotto canelo will do would be huge even more so if cotto had got the nod last night
this is whats so wrong with boxing cotto has always been to small and lacking offensively to be a real threat at 154 when he won the title from yuri foremen i wasnt impressed at all as yuri was the weak link at 154 and cotto failed to enforce himself in that fight

Posted December 2, 2012 5:02 pm

huckster

Underestimated his speed and his very busy jab. There is “no doubt” in Trout now. If he could get more power out of his right, he would be a nice package of a fighter.

Posted December 2, 2012 4:53 pm

I think your right about that, Hookoffthejab. I talked Austin about that this morning and he said he got the same vibe from Richard Schaeffer also.

He thinks Golden Boy is still going to try and put together the Cotto/Canelo fight on May 4th as planned.

Bummer…they’re going to give him the Zahir Raheem treatment.

Thanks for pointing it outm Gwite…but don’t be such an elitist about it. I have spell check but not boxing check. It’s one of the only one on one interviews with Austin on the net…post fight. Check it out and don’t be such a jerk!

hookoffthejab

canelo will run from trout …nO doubt ……

Posted December 2, 2012 4:39 pm

Joseph Herron

Thanks, Marc…I think Austin will give every top fighter a very tough time in the ring. He’s only one more big fight away from being recognized as a top pound for pound fighter. I can see him being the only other fighter at 154 with the guts to step in the ring with the winner of Triple G and Gabe Rosado.

Call me crazy, but I think he has the tools to pull off the victory over Gennady Golovkin. Would love to see it…it would also be a very big payday for Austin on HBO in 2013.
