He wasn’t so big or strong that he could KO Zbik or Rubio. And yet you think he will do that to Maravilla? I think a Chavez KO win is the least likely scenario here. Most likely scenario: Martinez stops Jr, possibly after turning his face to mincemeat. Second most likely: a closely-contested distance fight with Chavez automatically getting the decision because, well, it’s the WBC and he’s a Chavez. Third most likely: Martinez pummels Jr so badly for all 12 rounds that even the Mexican Mafia’s useful idiots scoring the fight have no option but to give it to the Argentine. Least likely: Chavez by KO.

I agree ! people say martinez runs! really?? How does he knockout people if he’s running?? he has defense! something chavez doesn’t, its called being smart n getting hit less…

I’m over here wondering wen sergio was ever wobbled by williams…The fights I saw had williams throwing punches nonstop & sergio matching that volume. I also had sergio wobbling williams & winning the 1st fight. People forget that paul was able to withstand margarito’s onslaught w/ his chin & sergio rocked him in the 1st fight. Martinez is highly motivated. Jr has Sr. to show him how to win. but Martinez’s camp knows this & is also highly intelligent. They will win this fight handily. I’m also wondering when jr went from being overrated to being a monster in so many people’s eyes….bc he beat up Andy Lee??? well so did Brian vera.

Whats Jr. going to do when he realizes he’s actually in over his head? Panic, stool quitting time, or will he collapse like the little PED taking kid that he really is?

The winner of the Chavez vs Martinez should get his props, no excuses..my guess is those who are rooting against Jr or don’t think much of him will have their bag of excuse if Chavez wins, especially if its by KO..

I can’t see a fighter like Chavez jr. Coming straight ahead trying to go to the body against a guy in Martinez who is not only a southpaw, fast hands and elusive. I see Chavez taking too many punches in this fight. Against a volume puncher like Martinez that doesn’t look good for Chavez. Chavez wants to brawl and fight on the inside. He has a punchers chance but in my opinion that’s it.

Sergio has to ko him or force a stoppage he’s seen pac-Marquez/Bradley rios-Abril etc…Like people said Sergio might be the favorite not to the judges though.Knock this paper champ out Sergio & reclaim what’s rightfully yours.Sergio beats the cheating jr by massacre.

i see Martineze out boxing Chavez in the early rounds, but i see Chavez start to come on in the middle rounds applying pressure, plodding forward and wearing Sergio down with body work. i like Chavez by late tko.

Posted August 15, 2012 12:27 pm

te tumbo

Btw, Martinez by UD or Chavez Jr. by late-rounds TKO. in fact, i don’t think Jr. wins this fight any other way. IMO, the scorecards will favor Martinez. after all, i do not envision Jr. outboxing and outscoring Martinez over 12 rounds. Martinez will do just that when he realizes that there’s a price to pay for engaging Jr. inside, which he’ll have to risk to land his own punches. imposing a punishing tax for doing so will win the fight for Jr. over 12 rounds or sooner.

Posted August 15, 2012 12:05 pm

te tumbo

“How much punishment can Junior take to give his body work sufficient time to start taking its toll?” is part of the suspense leading up to this matchup. i think Jr. does score hard and often enough early to flip Martinez into avoidance mode. at which point, the advantage becomes all Jr. that’s the best-case scenario for Jr. and yours is the best-case and anticipated scenario favoring Martinez. i just think that Jr’s. recent improvement gives him the young-lion’s edge; i also believe that Martinez has developed into the kind of crafty veteran who can exploit a young lion’s ambition; but there’s just something about the timing that favors Jr. the stars couldn’t be more favorably aligned to suit his ambition.

Posted August 15, 2012 11:59 am

BeefBurger

te tumbo, you make some valuable points, but still… Martinez is going to hit Junior in the face. A lot. From round 1 onwards. Martinez is not a Zbik or a Rubio – he carves guys up when he hits them. Nobody has an iron chin, anyway. How much punishment can Junior take to give his body work sufficient time to start taking its toll? We’ll see. But I reckon Maravilla knows he has to start fast and pile on the damage to Junior’s head, and he has the ideal opportunity to do so against a straight-forward fighter with mininal head defence who poses no real risk of catching Maravilla with a freak fight-ending punch. Martinez by late-mid rounds TKO.

Posted August 15, 2012 11:19 am

te tumbo

Btw, the “son of a legend” profile has been a cross to bear not a blessing for Jr. it’s exposed him to chronic cynicism regarding his agenda and performances. not to mention unrealistic expectations aligned with his legendary father’s ATG legacy. nonetheless, this has only motivated Jr. to earn the ring-credibility that his father’s name can’t provide. a great performance v. Martinez will turn the trick and a convincing win will provide Jr. with his own page in boxing annals immediately following his father’s.

As usual you have the prefabricated excuses locked and ready to go in case Martinez get his ass handed to him by Junior..

Posted August 15, 2012 10:55 am

te tumbo

it took a younger Martinez 14 rounds to “expose” Williams’ already predictable style. along the way he was decked and wobbled by volume not true powerpunching. IMO, Jr. will apply Both and between Martinez’s losses to Margarito and Williams, fatigue (if not despair) v. unrelenting pressure is what bothers him most. Btw, besides the questionable decision v. Vanda (which the audience thoroughly rejected and Jr. redeemed), Jr. has earned his “Ws”. i don’t know where all of this favorable scoring suddenly came into play(?). otherwise, i felt that Jr. would have to KO Fredo, Rubio, and Lee to earn those wins and fortunately Jr. has stepped up to the challenge. Martinez is just the latest. i won’t be shocked by another Jr. win.

Chavez is going to be hit from angles that he’s never seen before. Martinez has had the better opposition and has fought some extreme hard punchers. Chavez’s style will be exposed once and for all. Chavez doesn’t use his reach he likes to put his head down and step in with his left foot face forward. Marvelia’s going to hit him with so many Left leads that Chavez is going to beg for a right jab. Marvelia knows how to step to either side and throw combinations. Whereas Chavez’s only move is shoulders in and baby step himself forward. I don’t see an upset nor do I see Chavez winning this fight perhaps if it were in Texas his chances would be greater.

does anyone know why Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s head is so big ??

Posted August 15, 2012 9:23 am

First off I think Lee and Rubio were better fighters than Barker not to sure about Macklin but he was more so tough with a good plan-he wasn’t really that good. Anyway Zbik is better than just about everyone I’ve seen Martinez fight recently. Chavez didn’t stop him but he tore him up in the later rounds and Rubio is just tough but he to was beating up pretty bad. Martinez is big I don’t know why everyone is tryn to call him small. The dude walk around 180 something close to 190 so how is he so small? If he’s so small he should’ve made weight by now but guess what he hasn’t made it yet. He’s getting beat down so go head and prepare ur excuses now

Posted August 15, 2012 8:42 am

Gannicus

I’ve heard everyone say Rubio is going to KO Chavez and then he got his ass whooped. After the fight fans resorted to oh well who’s Rubio lol. I heard a crap load of fans sayn how hard Lee punches and he had more skills. Chavez str8 up beat him down and yes I disagree with the judges scores cause I saw Lee just getting hammered in that fight and when I heard the scores I was like how could anyone possibly have thought Lee was winning the fight lol. Anyway, fans- my bad the haters then dismissed Lee as a nobody to not give Jr props and when he tears Martinez butt up, you’ll say he was old; Chavez was juicing; where are the test results; the ring was to small; Chavez was to big or Martinez wasn’t himself. We might even hear about an injury after his butt whooping. The funny thing about it is you’ll then almost immediatley say he’s ducking the best @ 168. He needs to move up and fight Pav, Froch and Ward now right lol-you guys kill me

Posted August 15, 2012 8:35 am

Could be Top Rank just think Martinez has slipped just enough. I’m not that impressed with anything Martinez done outside of the Williams rematch but Williams was waaay wide open to get stopped. I do give Martinez his props but I just see a guy that is ready to lose. He’s been busted up in 2 of his last fights and looked quite beatable to me. I thought Macklin was going to pull it off for awhile and who the hell exactly is Macklin? Chavez Jr will beat Martinez but it wont be because anyone cheated him. I will say b4 the fight Martinez will stress how well he’s going to do and then afterwards he’ll say how he wasn’t himself and make up a few excuses I’m sure of it and you guys being the haters you are will most likely agree with him

I give Chavez and his team props for taking on the champ. They could have let him go for years calling himself a champ and knocking around low tiered contenders, but they definitely stepped up. As for the KO, of course they predict a win – who walks into a fight saying they only want to survive? I take Martinez in this one, but I look for a decent scrap. Chavez is young, strong, has some power and is huge.

just re watched the pavlic martinez fight “maravilla” was on the deck 3 times but the ref called just 1` knockdown the ghost landed all the real hard shots no way did “maravilla” hurt the ghost he did not knock him down he did not wobble him he didn’t even back the ghost up but he did manage to cut pavlic twice that how he got the win but he could not hurt pavlic who looked to be out of the fight mentally but still almost beat “maravilla

Posted August 15, 2012 7:06 am

BeefBurger

Martinez may or may not have the power to KO a much bigger and stronger kid like Chavez. On the other hand, Chavez will definitely not KO Martinez, because if he couldn’t get Zbik or Rubio outta there (and couldn’t even come close to doing it), how the hell is he going to stop Maravilla? We all know that if it goes the distance, Martinez would be in serious danger of losing on points no matter what happened in the ring. But here’s the deciding factor for me: Chavez does not have a great defence and he doesn’t usually need to because he’s huge for a middleweight and has a great chin. Chavez’s face will be there for Martinez to hit through all 12 rounds, and Martinez will oblige. Maravilla has a tendency to cut his opponents up, and that’s what’s going to happen here. A bloodied and disfigured Chavez will be pulled out by his corner, the ref or the ringside doctor in the late middle rounds, saving face by protesting that he wants to continue. Prediction: Martinez by TKO. He will make good on his distasteful smack talk to Chavez Snr about returning his son to him in unrecognizable condition.

The Story of Boxing: Young lion feeds on old lion. That’s how it goes. Young champs are created by beating up on older guys who are starting to slip. Let’s face the facts here, Chavez Jr will be 11 years younger than Martinez, bigger, stronger, with a granite chin. Because he’s a rising star he’ll have the favour of judges and authorities, the ring size and other factors will probably be in his favour too. He’ll basically walk down Martinez through the 12 rounds like a bull and it’ll be called “the upset of the year”, and “a new champion will be made”. People hate it but the truth is that Martinez is the future, Welcome to boxing folks

UJelly?

Chavez can make this very difficult for Martinez, but I’d still be surprised if he actually won.
The thing is, he was losing on the scorecards to Andy Lee (a fairly limited fighter), but won through attrition. I’d be surprised if Martinez succumbed in the same manner… since losing to Margarito, Martinez has proven against the likes of Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik that he can now handle pressure fighters.
Chavez is bigger than those guys to be sure, but there’s nothing in his history that suggests he punches with the force that those guys do.
Also, Chavez interestingly didn’t let his hands go when Lee was moving… he’d only start throwing when Lee planted his feet. I don’t know that Martinez will give him the same opportunities.

Having said that, if Chavez is relentless, never stops moving forward and cuts off the ring well, he may be able to prevent Martinez from firing back with any real power. And if he manages that, he could hustle out a points win… but he’ll need to take risks and learn to throw punches on the way in.

We’ve all been wrong about fighters, in the past. Chavez Jr. is proving a lot of people wrong lately. He has a good shot at winning this fight, even though, he’s not the better fighter. For this reason alone, every fight fan should say, WTF is really going on here. WTF, is Top Rank, really up to? Top Rank is running things folks, and Top Rank is bigger than Sergio’s Martinez’s skill level, and they will find a way to win, by any means necessary.

the world cheering against him has made Chavez Jr. a more determined fighter. he’s embraced the mission of having to make his own mark in the sport. win or lose, a great performance in this fight will define his legacy and a win would be an identity beyond being the “son of a legend”.

Martinez was stretched in official and unofficial wins v. Cintron and Williams but Chavez Jr. is no Cintron or Williams. he’s a bigger and better puncher able to apply his own unrelenting pressure. the closer we get to this fight, the more i like Jr’s. chances. a Jr. win will be an upset. after all, he hasn’t shown that he can handle a wily character like Martinez. however, a Jr. won’t shock me. Jr. is peaking at just the right time to challenge Martinez. in fact, the boldness of the challenge itself has shut the traps of some yappiing haters already. anyway, i’m anticipating a hotly-contested bout with Martinez fading in the final three rounds. at which point, Jr. will rush him for the Big upset win.

JCC Jr. is NOT knocking Martinez out. He’s not even going to win. No way. He’s not fighting Andy Lee here folks. Martinez is too slick, too strong for Chavez. Chavez will be aggressive and throw a lot of punches, but too many of them will miss the mark. Martinez will make him miss and make him pay with counterpunches, especially late when Chavez tires. There’s only two ways Chavez can win: 1. A shady BS decision (like Pacquiao vs. Bradley, Molina vs. Kirkland, etc.) or 2. Have Richard Steele as the referee and have him steal the fight from Martinez in the last round like he did in the elder Chavez’s fight vs. Meldrick Taylor.

Posted August 14, 2012 9:18 pm

This is going to be a great fight. I think Chavez will make this a close scrap. I have Martinez winning by 1 or 2 rounds. Chavez does more damage in the middle rounds but Martinez will have the punch volume in the later rounds. Conditioning is the key.

Junior will stop Martinez. Martinez is too small, pushing 40, and gasses late. Plus, just a hunch, but I bet the ring will be the size of a postage stamp to favor Junior.

Sergio needs to worry about Chavez blowing up after the weigh in, Martinez just needs to out box and move, if he tries to KO a much heavier Chavez, he (Sergio) will have to work really hard all night to do it. Just out box the kid and get the W. I am starting to really like the youngster CHAVEZ, he has balls, good luck to both.

How does Maravilla “run” but manages to knock out his last 4 opponents? (2 were undefeated) Yet Chavez “walks” down his opponents, but only managed to stop 2 of his last 4. Martinez doesn’t “run”, he boxes and the ONLY reason why Chavez is telling Martinez “don’t run” is because they know he’s too good of a boxer/puncher.

Posted August 14, 2012 7:20 pm

skinnysteve

‘Maravill” will run he will run like a coyote and try to potshot chavez from the outside and then run some more with his hands down below his waist but chavez will walk him down rake him with debilitating body shot and KO him within the distance “maravilla is too old too week and fights scared allways running he can’t hurt chavez jr

Posted August 14, 2012 6:52 pm

The Best!

This fight i give a slight edge to Martinez for the simple fact that he is a better boxer and has fought the better opposition . You definitely have to take height , strength, hunger and age into consideration and that benefits Chavez jr. If Chavez comes in like a caveman head first as he has done on several fights he will be used as a punching bag, however if he mixes it up with some boxing, head movement and some brawling he can possibly wear Martinez down. And lets be honest here, Martinez is almost 39 years old but gets better and stronger and with a higher K.O% with age, I will put my money both he and Chavez jr. are juicing. Just because Martinez hasnt gotten caught doesnt mean he isnt juicing.

Let’s not forget that Margo-cheato was probably loading his gloves back in 2000 as well.

Jr. has age and size on his side. He’s also a volume, body puncher – kryptonite against thin fighters.

But S-Mart is so smart, skilled, tough and has amazing stamina.

If this fight happened 12 months ago, it would have been a whitewash. Jr has really improved since then and I believe he’ll give S-Mart a tougher fight than some expect.
However, I still think Martinez wins but in victory, Jr will show heart and grit in a close decision loss.

I don’t care what chavez jr. Did to Andy lee. Lee was never a champion or an elite fighter. Martinez is an elite fighter who loves when fighters come straight ahead at him. Marivilla no call him el matador. Chavez jr. Will be a young strong bull who will be slayed. Martinez will be to quick and when that left hand lands on juniors jaw over and over round after round no way Chavez makes it out of this fight not damaged. Martinez will keep this fight in the center of the ring controlling distance and landing the left hand at will. Martinez by tko rd 5

Chavej Jr. is going to STOP Sergio Martinez in late rounds. Martinez is making the biggest mistake by taking this fight. Also, the bull statement by Martinez that Chavez Senior “had better take a photo of his son now, as he will be unable to recognise him after the fight) and he has beaten” will come back and haunt Martinez on September 15th.

Stop following the nonsense excuses by the losers or losing end. With that said, Manny Pacquioa has NEVER been tested positive for any kind of illegal drugs, but Floyd Mayweather is so SCARED of Manny Pacquioa’s speed, power, stamina, nonstop-punching volume and natural killer instinct and he has accused Manny Pacquioa of using PEDS to avoid the fight…and floydiots follow. I hope Martinez’s camp insists that Chavez take appropriate drug tests, in the appropriate manner, at the appropriate time. If he doesn’t, Martinez should refuse to fight him or make all kinds of charge against him after the fight. Win or lose. Besides that, I think Martinez should be demanding random PED testing.
