Young Lights Out

the reason y 50 took boxing is because a very little known fact.. 50 was quite a good boxer himself he fought in the jr olympics… also he is a southpaw…

Are people seriously bring ethics and morals in judging fifty cent within the world of boxing? Are we really having this discussion where boxing is litter with some of the most scummy people on earth. Get real.

50 cent is mild in comparison to some of the scumbags that make up boxing. Come off your high horse

Weight divisions are very flawed. Pounds is whats relevant. Weight divisions are SO dumb that they say a 141 pounder vs. a 147 pounder is fair but a 147 pounder vs a 150 pounder is unfair. How DUMB is that?

Dirrell Magee is a solid fight.

A really good test of where Dirrell is, at this stage of his career.

Magee is a legitimate fringe contender and has never given anyone an easy fight and has some decent wins on his record.

Lets just hope 50 doesnt stage his fights like his rap beefs. The D-block beef was staged the dipset beef was staged maybe the lil Wayne and Rick Ross beef also. Please dont bring that B.S to boxing bra.

Most people in boxing represent the scum of the Earth. Maybe 50 Cent will be a refreshing change from the pimp promoters out there now. I for one welcome him.

I never cared for rapper 50 cents but I have to look at boxing against other combat sports and you know who I’m talking about …Dana who? If bringing in 50 cents can bring in a newer generation of fans as the rest of us age and phase out then I hope he will succeed. Boxing needs younger fans then ever before and as long as the real players aka the fighters/boxers can continue to perform and get paid good money, we should all be glad a rapper like 50 cents is making an attempt. I’m just surprised he never jumped on the band wagon with MMA, UFC and all that stuff where all the youngins seem to congregate. I’ll like 50 cents as long as he is on our side.

Floyd I wonder about because outside of boxing he hasn’t proven much as a business person. His music label doesn’t seem to be going anywhere and those are generally really bad investments. 50 Cent has shown lots of business savvy in the music business and more so in other areas. Of course color has nothing to do with it. If people think that they need to stop being cavemen.

Have you ever paid for a King card? If you have you gave money to a person who has done far more harm to society than 50 Cent ever will. Hate to break this to you but 50 Cent has plenty of appeal to all races. I am no fan of his music but deny what he has done on the business side of things is just to ignore facts because of personal opinion. This isn’t about rap music anyways. It is about promoting boxing.

I like the concept and idea of Floyd and 50`s new TMT promotions but they need to change the name because the name TMT sounds like and is almost identical to Roy Jones Junior`s TNT promotions.

You aren’t even allowed by boxing commissions to fight that often. It is too brutal of a sport for that. Forget the networks. They aren’t interested and I don’t see even the UFC staying on FOX much longer. You aren’t really comparing the Super Bowl that gets millions for a minute of ad time to a prize fight are you?

Top Rank and Golden Boy are already circus acts. It doesn’t matter if you are wearing bling or a suit to me. I don’t like 50 Cent but I do respect him for some of his business moves. His music has been a small % of his income. Don’t forget the deal he made with Vitamin Water. I have my doubts of this working but I don’t count them out. He isn’t some ghetto thug, those guys get washed out of the business very fast. Been a long time since that stupid song about his B-day was popular and he is still around.

It is a sport with weight divisions. Sure catch weights can happen if they are close but it is still a sport with weight divisions.

God not 50 cent. The last think boxing needs is a ghetto thug reducing the noble sport to bling bling pimping hoes and crack-coke pushing. No more circus acts. Chisora was bad enough

As much as the boxing world needs a shot in the arm, they don’t need another promotion company. Golden Boy, Top Rank and Dibella Entertainment is about all you need these days. The problem is it takes too much time between fights so there is no continiuity. If fighters would/could fight every 2 months boxing would thrive and be more poplular than football. Get it on Network TV.nbc, cbs, abc CAN HOST A SUPERBOWL why not a prize fight ? Another HUGE thing is fighters fear losing !! The public will still watch Amir Kahn, theyd still watch a Margarito fight, even a Mosley fight…..or I would never miss a Mike Katsidis fight, they have all lost alot, lately but are entertaining, action fighters and after all what is Boxing AND/.OR ALL SPORTS, ENTERTAINMENT !!

Posted August 24, 2012 7:27 am

Exiled Yank

Wilder – Exactly! There are fighters in the US that can, or recently could have, sold out 50k seat venues, but they opt for PPV numbers instead. US fighters only care about PPV figures and not butts in seats. I have no doubt FM MP can sell out 50 plus seats if they chose to do so, but instead it will be in the MGM with 18K seats. DLH could have done it with numerous fights. Europeans still like to see events live and in person. Americans are happy sitting their fat asses in front of their 80 inch flat screen with a six pack and 6 large pizzas.

Posted August 24, 2012 6:48 am

Exiled Yank

I wish these guys nothing but the best as they go against the big boys in the sport. The one issue that could hurt them is inexperience. Even DLH got Schaefer to run his company when he started out. Anyhow, hopefully this will end some of the stalemate in the sport. Then again, it may cause more. DLH does not like FM jr, and we all know Arum hates and fears him.

Boxing is a Sport not a division SO I don’t mind the catchweights. I care about the quality of the matchups. I would rather see Ward vs. Martinez at a catchweight rather than see Dirrell vs. Magee with no catchweight.

Posted August 24, 2012 12:44 am

I hope TMT can provide quality matchups without catchweights. Real fights for real titles between real champs. Naturally, young fighters need to develop records, popularity and experience before their thrown in the deep end… Seems like som fans just dont understand that, or understand the idea of stay-busy tuneup fights. I’ll b particularly interested to see how they handle the lil’ monster gamboa and hopefully we see him in som big fights soon!!

Mayweather Promotions was never really a promotion company. They weren’t even licensed to make fights which is why everyone under their banner fought under Golden Boy. I too hope their vision comes through and they help the sport. Have my doubts too.

Posted August 23, 2012 11:19 pm

terror tim

Not a bad first card for them. People are far too critical. I have my doubts of this working out but only because most businesses fail. I wish them the best and that their vision comes to fruition but it is an uphill battle. Their stable is young and the stars both need fights to get themselves ready for bigger opponents. The test will be their match making. Do they get match ups that make for great fights or will these fights be easy two rounders. Match making is an underrated science that can make or break a promotion company. Give the fans a great show and they will come back.

Posted August 23, 2012 9:14 pm

When DLH started Golden Boy he was singing the same song: he was creating a company by the fighters, for the fighters. Wether the politics made him adjust, or it was greed, Golden Boy is anything but the savior of boxing, and DLH sounds more like a car salesman than anything else the way he tries to pump his uneven match-ups.

Mayweather, though more honest than DLH, has plainly stated that he’s in it for the cash and the history with which he has masterfully matched and marketed himself do not suggest he’s going to match his fighters tough. In fact, the first card doesn’t promise any close fights so far. He’d be smart to work closely with guys like Gary Shaw, DiBella and Don King to get the ball rolling, but its not like any of them are exactly trustworthy boy scouts.

It’s too bad that GPB, trumped TMT, and stole their showtime broadcast. Now we’ll have to see a couple of GBP fighters get gift decisions as normal.

TMT is a merely a makeover of Mayweather Promotions. Mayweather Promotions didn’t seem to be doing that well prior to Money’s jail stint. Mayweather needed help in the way of ingenuity and capital. 50 seems to fit the bill perfectly. FM & 50 Cent may just be able to build a solid promotional outfit like De la Hoya and Schaefer have w/ Golden Boy Promotions. Gamboa vs. Salgado and Dirrell vs. Magee is far from scintillating, but it’s solid. It’ll be interesting to see how this promotional venture plays out over time.

I think Golden Boy and Top Rank had unspoken agreement to tag-teamed the TMT to its downfall before it even began.

To me, Calling their company The Money Team. Just refers to Floyd’s nickname, Like Golden Boy Promotions does Oscars. Not a big deal naming it that.. The card isnt bad for their first fight, plus both coming off of long lay offs. Showtime will want it since they invested in the Super Six and 168 lbrs

Caliba Floyd and 50 aint changing nothing they’ll bleed the sport dry to make money. I have a huge problem with the name because MONEY (bad decisions and fixed fights due to gambling the protecting of marketable fighters etc.) has been the source of corruption in the sport i love forever.

What exactly do you mean “retain” of Mayweather by Haymon and Golden Boy? Mayweather is not under a promotional or managerial contract with Golden Boy…it’s actually the other way around. Mayweather is a free agent boxer and he contracts Golden Boy to promote each of his fights under a fixed fee contract. If Mayweather decides to have TMT promote him, the Golden Boy doesn’t have anything to say about it.

Posted August 23, 2012 3:59 pm

Apparently, the writer Mr. Pearson hasn’t been keeping up with the latest news. Just yesterday, the sports director of Showtime (can’t remember his name at the moment) said in the news that the November 17th date is still open and still up for grabs. Golden Boy does NOT have a lock on the November 17th date with Showtime yet.

The sport loses so many of the few integrity points it has left with a promotional company named “The money team”. Sounds like the name of a rapping WWE tag team lol. Hint boys yes its all about money but u dont broadcast it it hurts the sports integrity and turns people off.

Puglife

Word on the street is that Al Haymon and GBP are pushing back in an effort to retain Mayweather. Haymon can’t be counted out and if TMT can get Floyd in spite of him it would be a serious coup. I hope they do because a new promotional player would shake things up and hopefully bring an end to the idiotic cold war between Top Rank and GBP. Now if TMT could get Haymon, too, then they’d really be a match for GBP and Top Rank…

Doubt that TMT can compete with K2 and Sauerland in Europe. Every K2 event is sold to more than 125 countries and almost sells out big stadiums everytime. When is the last time a fight has sold 45-50.000 at the gates in the US?

It’s not going to be super smooth for the first few years for Floyd and Fifty. It’s a business with a steep learning curve—a matter of earning people’s trust and confidence. In 10 years they could be the top promoters in Boxing; they talk about eventually promoting boxing events in Hong Kong, New York, Boston, Budapest, Paris, Abu Dhabi, Prague, Cape Town, Vienna, Dubai, Tokyo, Marrakesh, Singapore, Berlin, Galway, etc. Boxing is a massive global sport but there’re so many venues that haven’t been tapped. There’s nothing to promote a city like a major fight. One thing top musicians learn when they tour is who are the best event promoters in the best cities. Dealing with Floyd and Fifty can be cool. Dealing with Oscar, Arum, or King can be not as cool at times.
