whiteboysdays I do think mayweather sr is on a elite level as far as traing goes . delahoya who hadmany famous trainers said mayweatherwas the best he had does that mean he the best I dont know but certainly up . esp with floyd jr who not going to change that much at this late stage so I say floyd sr a bit crazy but a elite trainer

do you guys think Sr is an elite trainer, on the same level as guys like Robert Garcia, Nacho, Freddie, Virgil etc. Not sayin for training Floyd cuz obviously he has an advantage there but just in general

HOW LONG BEFORE THERE FIGHTING AGAIN ?.FLOYDS BEEN SAYING ROGER HASN T BEEN FEELING TO WELL IN THE 24/7 . AT THIS LATE STAGE IN MAYWEATHERS CAREER HIS FATHER ISNT GOING TO TEACH HIM ANY THING HE HASNT SEEN

What is the big newa that sr. will train jr. their relationship as family is like happygirl stinking ass. They are together again just to hype jr. next fight. To get public attention that they are peace again. what’s the big deal.

did sr. train delahoya for the majority of his career? or was it for just a few fights? I was just getting into boxing at the tail end of delahoya’s career so I wasnt too sure on that

Floyd has been at this game so long he has done the knowledge and does not need training…..But he does need criticism…If you have trained for a long time you sometime think you have done enough,or if you haven’t you will make up for it next time…You need someone to call you a lazy bast**d and push you till you vomit……..

Who trains Jr is irrelevant at this point in his career. This is one of the many “reality TV” type promotional stunts for a Jr. fight. Mayweather has become less mobile not because of his trainer but more due to age & inactivity(not to mention his recent opponents style). Ideally Jr won’t be facing Alexander. On paper their styles don’t mix well. Alexander has shown he can be a tentative fighter & that is the last thing you want to be vs. a boxer like Jr.

The Mayweather drama continue. First episode Floyd jr. breakup with his Dad as trainer, second episode, Floyd jr. goes to jail because he beat his baby momma and kids, third episode, Floyd jr. suckered punch his opponen, 4th episode father and son togetheagain. It is like soap opera, hahahahaha Next episode Floyd jr. kickout his as his trainer because he is always late.

History favors this being a debacle, the level of resentment that Floyd displayed towards his Dad goes WAYYYYYYYY beyond the usual “you never got me a scooter when I was little”…..Interpersonal dynamics between people RARELY change absent a coordinated and protracted effort… I could honestly care less if Floyd and his Dad ever speak again but the smart money is on them having some sort of epic drama sooner or later… Floyd Sr falls out with fighters who are NOT his son all the time..

Their father and son relationship is on and off. They are on again just for publicity of Floydie jr May4th upcoming fight. Marketing gimmick

How much you want to wager this blows up? These guys are always trying to one up each other and is why it hasn’t worked in the past. Roger didn’t have that with Floyd where he was trying to be the spot light where Floyd Sr does. Also how many fighters have been dropping Floyd Sr recently because he shows up late and doesn’t treat training right? His days as a top trainer are over.

decline in Floyd Jr’s technique and tactics was noticeable….some people are crazy floyd was amazing in his last 2 fights he has been amazing…

Why are they showing that video and saying Floyd was slapped by his dad? That is just the same video they showed on HBO

Poppa Floyds gift is teaching technique, his pupils can’t seem to tolerate his tardiness. They should take whatever they can get….and run with it….

It’ll be interesting to see how KING Floyd handles himself since he’s come out of jail. Is there any residual effects from having to think about “life” from a different perspective while sitting in a cell??. Hagler & Hopkins actually came from jail turning out to be a threats in the ring! Conversely, Tyson went in there during his career…..was in there much longer than Floyd and came out a much more pensive person, devoid of the animal instinct he once had. Senior may have to deal with a guy (his son) that MAY start to rely a little too much on defense at this stage of the game….and IF there is a tendency or fault that Sr focuses on, its the tendency to focus a bit too much on defence. Uncle Rog seems a bit more balanced. Nevertheless Sr has been complaining about certain aspects of Floyds fighting for years….maybe its an honest assessment…who knows??… so lets see if Poppa Floyd can impart some wisdom, in areas where he sees his son has been lacking. Poppa Floyd is the FOUNDATION, a SOLID foundation that seems to have helped his son the most compared to his other fighters. Jr has NEVER lost with EITHER guru in his corner. Nevertheless, Junior definitely NEEDS someone in his corner….Jr knows this like any other exceptional athlete does. Excellence demands input from another RELIABLE source in the heat of battle….even a little (which isnt really “little” in the overall scheme of things) help turns out to be a lot!! Poppa Floyd will certainly contribute….My question is: will Jrs head be in the fight after what he’s put himself through!?

EXCELLENT article….Every fighter needs that voice of reason in their corner…..no fighter is an island!!

I think bringin in his father can only help. If for some reason they clash and Sr is gone from what weve seen before I dont think it will distract or set Floyd back in his training. They have their routine, been doin it forever, if senior can help a little as far as a gameplan and makin adjustments then why not. I agree with Rjack about Berto. I thought he was gonna do big things and he still could but his corner is a joke. Watch his fight with Guerrero, I have never seen a worse job between rounds, absolutely pathetic.Guarantee any one of us could of jumped in and done better

Watching Jr. and his dad is like watching a train wreck… You want to turn away but you can’t.

the big question is will Floyd Sr be kicked out before the HBO 24/7 series or during it.

Posted February 14, 2013 5:39 pm

SREDMOND

Robert, I would venture to say the motivations lie primarily with Roger becoming too ill to keep up with the rigors of training, I often wondered how the late Manny Steward was able to manage the mitts with Wlad Klits when he was in his 60’s…Its interesting because Floyd Sr has Sarcodosis which can affect the lungs, to me this indicates that Roger may be worse than previously thought… Whatever the rationale for the change I am sure that this is a VERY conditional alliance given Floyds history with his Dad… I am sure that SR will have to tread lightly lest he be barred from camp quick fast and in a hurry.

Posted February 14, 2013 5:34 pm

SREDMOND

Robert, your thesis on Floyd is thin at best like like all boxers he has relative performances he has set the bar so high that a normal deviation looks like slippage..Mayweather is also fighting in a more stationary manner which will likely continue now that he is getting older and that affords some opportunities that never existed when he was constantly hitting and moving…He is also punishing his foes with harder shots and has become more fan friendly… Sr’s rep is primarily based off of him being Jr’s father, the bulk of Jr’s success has come ABSENT Floyd Sr’s direct input… Truth is that Floyds BEST days as a pugilist are behind him from and athletic standpoint (he is 36) but 85% or 90% of Floyd Mayweather still leaves him as the BEST in the worlds…. Sr is not going to change ANYTHING at this point…

Robert, If Roach and Nacho are not around i agree Floyd Sr. is the best trainer out there

Floyd jr. is already 36 and inactive and will not fight dangerous opponent. His remaining fight is just for the money and as usual just for the money.

Hatton was doing drugs….

Posted February 14, 2013 4:30 pm

Hatton was a shyster, he was training behind Floyd Sr’s back with Lee Beard, ignoring Floyd Sr’s training methods. Hatton put more fatih in Beard then he did in Mayweather Sr…even though he got a good win over Malignaggi!! When he got in the ring with Pacquiao he didn’t fight the way that Mayweather was teaching him to fight he fought the way that Lee Beard was teaching him to fight – hands low, chin untucked and got plastered!!

“This gives Floyd Sr. a chance to teach, fine tune and correct a fighters technique or tactics between intervals and then start the next interval of mitts work” …. Really? How did that work out for Mr. Hatton?

I’m not writing just to write, Floyd Jr was MUCH sharper against Marquez and Mosley when his father was in his camp helping out. Floyd Sr is a stickler for perfection and executing tactics and gameplan correctly. That’s what Floyd Jr needs right NOW. Floyd was getting hit MUCH, MUCH, more during the Ortiz and Cotto fights and he knows he needs a tuneup in the gym to go forwards…

Posted February 14, 2013 4:15 pm

Chicago guy

Father and son unity is just for boxing business purpose to buy Floyd fight. That’s another Floyd jr. marketing strategy because no one is buying his fight anymore. He cherrypiuk his all he fights that he can possibly the winner also a braggart and disrespectful son. The idea is to get paying public symphaty that they are together but in reality it is a fake relationship. They are smart of fooling people.

Posted February 14, 2013 4:06 pm

SREDMOND

The author is writing just to wrtie, Kobe does NOT score 30 every game neither does Lebron James, Mayweather was tearing into Ortiz nicely and Cotto is a World Class 3 division Champion who has made everyone who ever got in the ring with him earn thier money win or lose… Having Floyd Sr around for those bouts would not have made much difference in the outcomes he won and he was dominant as per usual.

Floyd gets most of his preparation, time and reflexes in order by working ‘mitts’ with Roger, but Floyd is slipping a little…and Floyd Sr is a good trainer to get a fighter back on the right track. Floyd Sr will work more strategy and tactics with Lil Floyd then Roger does. but I could definitely see Lil floyd working mitts with both guys.

For anyone to say that Floyd DOESN’T train himself means that they don’t pay attention. Listen to Roger in the corner.. he pretty says that same ol’ same ol’. Floyd doesn’t have Roger in his corner telling him to, “Use more jabs, shoot the uppercut.. etc” Roger litterally just holds the mitts and, during the fight, gives outside perspective. He’s to Floyd what Roach was to James Toney. Just an outside pair of eyes that Floyd trusts.. great fighters get to that level. Roy was at that level up until he fell off. It’s not as uncommon as people think.

It’ll be interesting to see Floyd Sr/ Floyd Jr reunion because of this too because Sr is known to be very vocal and very hands on. I know Floyd Jr is his own boss in every aspect and likes to be in control of his camp and likes his space and room to do what he wants.. these two could end up butting heads again in the middle of camp if they haven’t come to terms on WHO is in control. We’ll see..

although i don’t agree with the author that his technique wasn’t there with ortiz and cotto because his father wasn’t there…all fighters have bad days and sometimes it may seem like they’re no longer as good, but it’s usually a little bit of complacency because the competition isn’t there to push the fighter

roger and company’s role and knowledge was established a long time ago…you don’t change what’s been working all these years…fighters change trainers when they feel they’ve hit a wall and most of the time it doesn’t work because the fighter is limited in one way or another……you don’t fix what isn’t broken

Anonymous, I TOTALLY believe that tell me the most INCISIVE comment Roger Mayweather has made in the past 5 years while Floyd is in the ring? “box that b@#$%th” “keep doing what you are doing”….. Floyd pretty much knows what he is doing, he is legendary for running in the middle of the night on the spur of the moment or training at odd hours… Of course Roger and Co play a role but its limited relative to other trainers.. Floyd Mayweather has been able to handle every manner of adversity imaginable and still he has NOT lost

he had to learn somewhere from someone and he had two good trainers his uncle an offensive fighter and his dad a defensive fighter he should be grateful for that and he shows it by sticking to family…..

With the comment of SREDMOND to be exact. Maybe necessarily that Floyds trains himself. He needs guidance like every boxer. But he damn sure is old school.

SREDMOND???? You can’t be serious with that buddy….or maybe you can. In that case you know nothing about boxing and should stick to figure skating or ballet. Train himself….wwwhhhhaaaaattttt!?!?!?!?!? Such an epic fail….

Posted February 14, 2013 12:00 pm

Lets be real for the most part Floyd Mayweather Jr trains himself and executes on the fly in the ring.. He is unlike ANY boxer in the business today, you could put Roach, Shields, Hunter, Jack Lowe, John McCain, Mitt Romney or Li’ Wayne in his corner and the guy is going to prevail…It seems use of his family has more to do with comfort, working within his inner circle and keeping the money in house than it does any real technical or tactical changes… Mayweather is OLD school you never see him with a strength coach or any special diets the guy is simply an ULTRA hard working, running, sparring, mitt work, medicine ball etc… Like all fighters in their mid 30’s FMJ’s biggest enemy is father time who robs all men of their best assetts.
