Yeah – Really.

The funny part is, the Brits have had some great fighters – Lennox was certainly an all-time great and would be the favorite against anyone not name ALI Calzaghe was great too – don’t know if he would have lasted 5 rounds against prime Roy but he certainly beat old Roy and old Bernard. David Haye won world titles at Cruiser and would likely beat any heavy not named Klitschko. When you look at those guys, all had tremendous talent and all showed up in absurdly great shape. Meaning lean, ripped, and ready to go to war.

Now look at guys like Fury, Price, McBride, and similar guys. They are tall and big. That gets them past most guys at the regional level. They talk constantly about what they will do. None really show up to fight in shape. if they don’t have a ridiculous gut or tons of baby fat like Fury and McBride, they just look kinda frail with a spindly neck (Price and Harrison) indicating they don’t do too much at the gym.

Honestly, I look at guys like that and think – do you guys have any concept of the term professional? Normal guys who work in an office 60 hours a week are often in better shape. You guys are professional athletes and yet you can’t skip the bars and all you can eat buffets? Is it really that tough, at 20 something, to at least look in shape?

They are brimming with confidence, having beaten some old local guys half their size, then they step onto the world stage and face guys who have some size, have a punch, and may be old but actually know what the hell they are doing. Am I the only one who thought even an old Tony would beat this frail looking guy? Really? Was anyone really that surprised? You’ll be surprised with Fury too – he definitely looks more solid that Price but he is still an undisciplined fat boy.

K2 Qweer- As long as the Klitschko sisters fight cruisers for the most part and get away with holding their “jab” arm out in front of them fully extended for 90% of the match, then retreat quickly as soon as they feel the opponent advancing towards them, then yes, they will stay undefeared and you will have reason to pull your pud…

Oh for God’s sake…British fans, or rather annoucers are out of their minds. I watched a replay and the commentators mentioned three or four times how the Klitschkos would certainly be tuning in. Yeah, I’m sure Wladimir Klitschko is taking a break from screwing Hayden Pannietier to watch an overated British palooka.

Yeah but the Americans have a dumb national anthem. About a battle in 1814 where the Brits tried to take ft. mchenry but in the morning the flag was still there. So big deal! so your flag was still there…get over it! Besides your capitol and white house got burned down. Sing America the beautiful, God bless America(Oh you might offend someone by using “God” in the anthem) How about America or This land is your land. Get over it about the flag still being there already…who cares!

I don’t think that the Klitchkos have anything to fear regarding Price surpassing them in any way ! Good luck to Price , but so much for all those Klitchko haters who were hoping that Price would take the crown away from the Kings ! They rule supreme and will do
so as long as they wish . It does make me wonder though , after this knock out , what
Price would do , if he got nailed by a real shot ; say like the one Wach hit Wlad with
at the end of round five ?! Ah well , so much for Wlad’s ” glass beard ” !

wouldn’t write off Price yet, but clearly not a career boost at this point. giving Thompson his due, he withstood some withering punches and still had enough to knock out a 6’8″ strong dude. but, Thompson was caught with a very troublesome punch — i.e., around the ear/neck area. if I were Price’s team I’d shoot for Audley Harrison. That might get him a fight with Tyson Fury. he’s got to make a statement on his next fight, and, I think he’s got the potential to do it.

Adrian, people were discussing Thompsons weight BEFORE the fight and his appearance was dreadful the man pretty much had a beer belly… I know you are trying to take some of the sting out of this defeat but Price was knocked out by an OLD man who was in bad condition coming off a TKO loss….End of story

Posted February 25, 2013 1:38 am

Svdc , Thompson looks always sluggish and seems that he don’t hit hard but that’s where a lot of fans make a mistake because Thompson can punch really hard and his record shows that ,he has 25 ko’ s that’s better than avarage puncher plus he is a southpaw a good size with a good experience that makes him very dangerous !

Writing Price off is not smart at this point. If Price was getting smacked around for 5rds and then got k.o. I would say yes.But he was caught with a shot on-behind the ear he recoverd from the shot but had no balance because of the type of hit.We will see how he rebounds he still has good skills..power..and size..yes there will be work but a complete write off at this time may not be so wise just yet.

Wow boxtra way to go out on a limb. Lol who in their right mind didn’t know that haye was the UK’s best heavyweight. His win over valuev is more impressive then anything any of the other UK heavys have ever done. Bold prediction Cunningham will beat fury but get robbed by the judges.

The problem with Price and even guys like Fury are that they are talentless. There someone said it. These giant guys rely on their size and weight to win fights rather than boxing skill. None of them are in great shape physically and are only in boxing because they are huge men. Yes they have basic boxing skills but they’re not good fighters, not in the slightest.

When a mediocre fighter like Thompson comes along of course he’s going win. While he may not be great Tony is far more skilled and experienced than Price, Fury, or guys like Valuev. Only skill and ability win fights once you move past fighting local bums.

Shocking result. When Thompson weighted in around 20 pounds heavier then his prime weight, I thought Price would easily KO him. The fact that Thompson is 41 and no real puncher makes this even more worrying; not sure where Price will go now. Time is not really on his side either.

The punch blasted his ear drum probably. Can’t see how he can be called “chinny”. More “eary” or “necky”. Anyway, Thompson is quality, gave Wlad (1st time) one of his tougher fights.

Posted February 24, 2013 10:09 am

a perforated ear drum whether caused by a blow or a loud noise still gives the same end result, if you are unsure of that result, just take a look at some of the heroes fighing abroad who have been closeto an exploding bomb, see how they react. Please dont anyone take offense and think i am comparing price to those heroes, just the end result of a perforated ear drum.

Perforated ear drum, affected his balance, so I would say it wasn’t really a KO loss.

medlar, you could be right, the punch did look like it landed on the ear and Price didn’t look hurt in the normal way a fighter does,he looked just totally disoriented……it certainly didn’t look like a shot that would hurt a heavyweight of any calibre…

Posted February 24, 2013 9:35 am

Looking at the fight again,it seems weird how such a soft looking punch could have done that to Price,it looked like it landed on or behind the ear.Ive seen him take some reasonable shots to the chin without blinking,i’ve never seen him take a big shot, but that Thompson punch looked like nothing.Price still has a bright future ahead of him,no one thinks he’[s the next Lennox Lewis, but then again, who could be? I almost think the era of great heavies is over.Damn i miss those days!

BTW: The EBU champion @ 112Lb is a 35 year old Spanish based Romanian named Silvio Olteanu. So how about Satch challenging him @ the Benidorm bullring this Spring/Summer? The place is packed with British ex-pats & tourests so there would be plenty of UK support for him. “Our fighters just don’t travel enough”!

Mick the Marmalizer

British & Commonwealth flyweight champion Kevin Satchell deserves a mention here for a good win over tough Luke Wilton. Personally I’d like to see Satch fight another 5 times at least this year both in the UK & abroad. As the UK’s #1 @ 112Lb surely an EBU title fight must be on the cards? I think Satch vs Ashley Sexton could work if Flash Ash could make the weight!

SREDMOND … I Think its a Heavyweight thing. Most Countries get a bit excited when they think they have a ‘prospect’… But to be honest, over here there was no great
furore over David Price. Everyone knew Thompson would be his first “step up”, everyone knew his chin needed testing. Do I think he will go on to be a World Champion?
Nope.. Its early days for him, the KO against Thompson will help, not hinder him, he will learn from it. But he lacks the movement to avoid punches. Neither Klitchkos are
exactly dancers, but they have proven to have very good chins, so are not afraid to take a shot in exchange for getting theirs off. Thats where I think Price will ultimately
fall short. He has devastating power, but thats only an advantage if he lands HIS big punch first!!

Posted February 24, 2013 7:11 am

Neil(pomy)

… as that did not look like a big punch and Thompson is not a KO-artist. At least McCall, Rahman, Brewster and Sanders (who upset Lewis and Wladimir) were legitimate heavy-punchers.

Posted February 24, 2013 7:06 am

I never thought Price was ALL that he never really beat anyone yet, but then again who has Thompson beat over the last 5 years?? NO ONE his last opponent prior to Wlad had 14 losses and Price was supposed to be young enough and good enough to beat an OLD FLABBY HW on the slide… Guess he wasn’t, put on rubber legs by one shot from a grandpa who is not even a big puncher…Woeful!

Posted February 24, 2013 7:05 am

Neil(pomy)

the moral of the story for boxing fans ….. dont get carried away with quick wins. A fighter learns little from having too many quick/easy fights. I always rated Fury more than Price for simply that. Fury’s metal had been tested …. Prices had not. I am gutted as it has robbed us Brits of a great domestic show-down. It is going to be a long rebuilding process for Price. Price needs to prove to us all that he is not a bigger version of Maccarinelli.

No big deal this. Nice to see two well matched fighters. The punch was unfortunate in that it caught Price behind the ear, a blow there can topple anyone for a few minutes so
we’ve not really learned that much about Price’s JAW. What concerned me was Price’s movement (or lack of it) Also his defence. Its how you won the Amateur titles lad, keep
your head protected!!!! Certainly not over for the lad, but he needs a serious rethink. He has the power to knock anyone in the world out but needs to learn that at World level,….
so does his opponent!! Kudos to Thompson. I must say I never heard any British pundits lauding Price as “the next Heavyweight Champion of the World”… we knew he had a
long way to go. So why the snide comments from the odd ignorant yank??? and as for Polish Pummier???… Go write me the History of Polish Champions on the back of a stamp!!

Why is everyone going on about a weak jaw? Lol Price was caught around the side of the head and its since been announced that he has suffer a perferated ear drum. This would have sent his senses all over the shop and this is not a small squat fighter but a gangaly tall fighter. So if I was team Price in would be too over concerned with this result. I think it was more of a technical loss due to the type of injury suffered rather than being totally blasted out. In the same way when we all seen Haye get knocked out by another Thompson, Carl, we knew that it was a stamina issue rather than getting out classed.

To say Price’s career is over is the talk of fools.Wlad lost to Purritty after how many pro fights? Was this result an upset? Yes.Was it a huge upset? No.This disproves the idiotic notion that Thompson was just in it for a payday.Thompson may have beat nobody for the last few years, but the guy is still a skilled operator. All this fight tells us is Price needs a new trainer and from the look of it, a chin implant.Price has all the Attributes to become a champ, but that punch of Thompsons is hard to figure how it hurt Price like that, but it seemed to land in an odd place. This is a test for Price, both Lennox and Wlad rose from bad knockouts/ stoppages to totally rebuild their careers to greatness. Now Manny is gone,I’m wondering who would be a good trainer for a giant like Price. Maybe Fury’s uncle…lol…

Posted February 24, 2013 5:02 am

I was shocked, too. I expected Price stop TT within 6 rds. Boy, was I wrong! Price now needs a clever manager and a new trainer. It’s clear that he needs to find somebody to teach him the way of Vladimir Klitschko: protect your weak jaw while carefully taking your opponent apart. But is Price clever enough to pull this off? And he needs to become a very technically skilled boxer to do this, which he is not at the moment. If Price learns his lessons, he will come back better, but less “spectacular” (most boxing fans these days are actually brawling, but not boxing fans – they rate action higher than boxing skills). David, make the right decisions and take your time!

Not a big shock. I figured this was a 50/50 fight, Thompson only having lost like 2 fights in 10 years, both to Wladimir. But it is a disappointment to see Price go down so early. He was working his way into the top 10 and now he has to regroup. Thompson should try to fight Povetkin to get a “title” shot, since he’s not going to get a fight vs. Wlad again.

This was nothing like Lewis or even Wlad’s KO losses. It took pretty monstrous shots to put away Lewis and Wlad was never taken out with a single shot.
It’s a shame for Price and I really don’t see how he can compete at the top level, even if he took on a jabby-holdy style like Wlad… the shot that took him out was from an off-balance (and stumbling in the ‘wrong’ direction) Thompson who himself isn’t a massive puncher by HW standards (though definitely he can still bang like anyone his size can).
Wlad Klitschko probably jabs nearly as hard as the KO punch in this fight… so unless Price can win fights without getting touched, I’d be surprised to see him go passed the regional level.

I have to say I find this a bit funny too. I was waiting for this fight to start and left because it took forever to get to the main event and I needed to get a run in. I figured Price would get the win but it looks like Tony got the upset. Looks like a no name in America can take care of England prospect anytime.

THERE IS NO SHOCK HERE FOR ME… I was the only one here to say last night( David Price vs Tony Thompson Weigh-in Video; Price Keen To Outdo The Klitschkos
)that Thompson will ko price and I was 100% sure that will happen because Thompson is the most underrated hw and price was to green to take him do early in his carrier !thompson in my opinion still the top hw and even his record shows that he only lost to klitchko .

One thing though, If Manny Steward was still alive he probably would of reached out to Price after this fight. With Wlad moving closer to the end he would have needed another project such as Price with a pretty good fan base behind him. Especially with his size, reach and power.

Some pretty stupid comments on here by the usual retards. There are two ways to look at this; A] Price was too inexperienced, and a loss will actually improve him…as of course it did for Joe Louis, Wlad K, Vitali K and Ken Norton…all who lost fights BEFORE ever becoming champion. B] Price cannot learn anything more and will plateau out as one of those kill or be killed heavies with a punch but poor defence/chin…like Earnie Shavers.

Posted February 23, 2013 9:39 pm

Price’s career is over, he has no credibility left. It was just a matter of time he gets exposed.

FARTYFACE

Thompsons got ability and class. Just because a all time great spanked him twice people were on him and trashing him. Wladimar is a great champion that learned how to utilize every tool he has and neutralizes all his opponets strengths then takes them apart. Thompson should make everyone realize just how good Wlad is.

Shake hands

Yosser Hughes would have nutted Thompson in the 1st round, he wouldn’t of let Thompson lay a punch on him.

Agree with gonzo. Maybe price moved up to soon. shows that Wlad is in his own class.

Gonzo the Dragonborn – ESB Poster of the Millenium

I’ve been very sceptical of Price’s punch resistance since his amateur days when I saw him get bounced up and down of the canvas by an Indian heavyweight in the Commonwealth Games. It’s never a good omen for success in the professional code if you’re having difficulty absorbing punishment in the amateur ranks. That said, I feel really sorry for him losing like that in front of all his home fans. He’s a really nice guy and he’s done nothing whatsoever to warrant any abuse directed at him. You could tell he was absolutely gutted beyond belief in his post-fight interview and it didn’t make for pleasant viewing. It takes a hell of a lot of guts to step into a ring and risk that kind putting yourself up for that kind of humiliation, which I can assure you is something boxers fear much more than sustaining physical damage or harm.

Wow that came as an big suprise!!! I thod it would be David Price by late KO or TKO or Tony Thompson by UD. Well good for the former 2-time world heavyweight title challanger Tony Thompson to get an nice victory but at same time I feel with young David Price but then again this happens in boxing and like Wladimir Klitschko learned from his losses to Ross Puriy and Corrie Sanders, I belive Price will do the same here and Thompson even as old is an quality opponent so no shame here. I still belive Price is a promising one and that this will be a valuable lesson for him.

Tony Thompson deserves a good pay day at the end of his career and has definitely deserved it after knocking out David Price, go Thompson.

Hayelord Nation

I could sense that knockout coming. It’s always very embarrassing when a fighter like Price receives so much pre fight hype, fighting in front of a packed house of singing fans and then is devestatingly knocked out by a 41year old overweight contender who didn’t even seem to land anything big and Price is spasming around like he’s been hit with a sledge hammer. I feel bad for the guy but i had a feeling he had a terrible chin.

Thompson would get paid nothing for a rematch v Klitschko, fight David Haye, get paid, proper payday, $2 million at least.

Gumboot

This isn’t about Fury. Unless I missed something he wasn’t in there punching either of those two. This isn’t about British or US boxers. This is about Price vs Thompson. End result Price, a Brit, untested at this level, got badly KOed by Thompson, a yank. End of story. Price needs to reassess and decide if he is up to this. KOed by 39 year old Tony Thompson ISN’T good at all for Price. Demonstrates the VAST gap between Price and a KBro. I think this shows more about Price than anything else. Probably doesn’t enhance Thompsons appeal for a rematch with Klit though. Or at least, I really hope it doesn’t.

Posted February 23, 2013 8:16 pm

Ned

This is what makes the heavyweight division so exciting. Any of the big guys can go down at any time in an instant. Price was over-hyped and had to be tested. He failed the test and has now lost his momentum. But like Seth Mitchell, he could be back. On the other hand, I’d be very careful predicting the same thing will happen to Fury. That’s a whole different can of worms.

State of the Heavyweight division, it’s the two Klitsckos, Haye, then some others after that, that’s the way I see it.

Neil… Yeah agree. The way fury has recovered from the knockdowns or heavy pressure is something he can be proud of and he knows he has that in his locker now. His path with regard to the guys he has been in with seems much better two. I think price would win a rematch but that loss will hurt, and as you say from blasting mcdermot sexton and skelton is very different to a massive jump uo to thompson who as only lost three or four(I think)

OK!!… This was no shock result. Which means the majority of British fight fans were also a tiny bit nervous
about Price’s chin!!. Why oh why did a top amateur not stay tight and high for the first few rounds though?
Box behind his jab, get a feel for what was coming back at him. Naive, and I blame his trainers. As for Haye?
he’s avoiding everybody except the Klitchko’s because he knows he would likely get beaten again by another
‘contender’.. arrogance beyond belief. If your going to retire Haye, then retire… stop trying to come across
as some kind of ‘Heavyweight superstar”.. cos your NOT!!

knowall – It was worrying me about Price. To many easy wins always has me concerned. Fury has been in wars, he even seems to like them … thats why i have always given him the edge over Price. We might have seen more of Furys flaws before tonight but we at least had seen him hit, hurt and recover to beat the opponent. For Price it was all new to him as we havnt seen him hit flush until Thompson got him with that great move.

I missed it but the English announcers are saying the punch landed to the neck and not the chin, hopefully they will show highlights of it. I’m just going by what the Brits are saying before anybody gets on me for it!

Posted February 23, 2013 7:02 pm

The1

I don’t honestly have anything against the Brits but they boo’d Thompson, The US Anthem and the poor gal that was dawning the American Flag looked horrified. Having said that, one American brought several thousand booing Brits to complete silence. So quiet that you could possibly hear a rat piss on cotton. I feel bad for Price (as he seems like a really good guy) the same as I felt bad for Thompson as everyone made sure to boo him before the fight. This sets up a nice finish to Thompson’s career financially and as for Price, he’s young and has pop.. he’ll be back.

BUTTERMANCAN

Come on Brandon lets be real. He hasn’t had that many fights. I’d still pick him to win against Wilder or Fury. Even the word Flattery would be redundant in describing Wilder’s record. He has fought nobody… I think he does have a dodgy chin. I was always worried when we saw him get blitzed by Cammarele in the olympics. But I thought perhaps he had ironed out defenses and maybe he wasn’t as chinny as we thought.
Perhaps he will turn out like Wladimir and get turn into a defensive masterclass that doesn’t take risks and uses height and reach to there fullest

Posted February 23, 2013 7:01 pm

BlueCardiff

brandon. its nothing to do with “Brits”… nobody hypes a fighter like you Americans. Dont forget Russians
have been kicking American arses all over the place for years. Price was a great Amateur but even against
Audrey Harrison you could see he was wide open, just that Harrison was afraid to throw a punch. Kudos to Thompson, great warrior!!… I’m £80 better off :)

BUTTERMANCAN

Brandon……are you from America? What a silly thing to say. I’d say that Price can learn from this and come back with a lot more to give. Who does America have? Wilder looks to have potential but he hasn’t been matched with anyone approaching the level that Price or Fury have met. Even the word flattery is redundant in use when trying to describe the level of opposition he has faced.
I think a fight between Price and Fury is even better now.

“On chins” (not shins), obviously

Posted February 23, 2013 6:51 pm

Price hadn’t had his whiskers checked as a pro up until tonight. As in the amateurs, the baby-giraffe-on-ice impression was the result when he did. You can’t put muscles on shins so his title aspirations could be up in smoke for good.

This was not a upset, it was/is plain to see that Price and Fury are over-rated and should have taken time to grow as fighters and not try and rush to the top. I still think Price is better than Fury both in and out of the ring.
