Calzaghe beat Hopkins when Hopkins was #5 P4P in the World. That is VERY impressive.

Who disagrees that Calzaghe beat Hopkins? it was simply NOT an impressive win and some thought that Joe lost (I didn’t) problem arises when people try and paint Calzaghe as having beat up Hopkins or something crazy like that when Joe scored with those slapping blows but failed to hurt Bernard and ended up on the canvas himself… If the win is kept in perspective then we can all move on but thes ridiculous assertions that Calzaghe put the whup on Hopkins are debunked by the reality that Hops is still fighting and Joe is an afterthought ONLY dredged up when Hopkins or Andre Ward are mentioned… Had Joe been able to REALLY beat up Bernard I would have seen the victory over the 43 year old Hops in a different light…

So whats the Hopkins fan boys excuse since Hop beat Cloud ??? Let me refresh you Hop fanboys. YOU ALL SAID HOP WAS SHOT AND OLD WHEN CALZAGHE BEAT HIM. Whats your excuse now since Hop beat at 48 CLoud ??? There is no excuse this tells me that Calzaghe is a better fighter than Hop anyday of the week. You guys cant make excuses for hop being old since he beat cloud at 48. Calzaghe beat him because Calzaghe was a better fighter thru and thru

Mma fighter, sometimes I wonder if judges use the same logic, “his faced looked bad after that round”? Also who are most people? JC came off the canvas in round 1 and slapped B-Hop into submission. B-Hop, was visible wilting as that fight went on, then pulled one of his biggest bone head (skill-full) moves to stall for time. B-Hop has has an impressive career showing what true ring generalship is, but in no way did he win the JC fight.

Props to Hopkins, I didnt think Cloud had the boxing IQ or atleticism to adjust to Bhops style, in saying that I would not pay to watch Hopkins fight as he has become too much of a spoiler and defensive techninican since he moved up in weight and has gotten a few years older, and understandibly so, I think people need to realise he doing it to break records and thats it..Winning ugly is still winning, just ask John Ruiz…

ok what does hopkins at his age is amazing and he shows that he is still competitive at highest level – this said cloud is nothign special and hopkins was easlisy beaten by dawson who was destroyed by ward – so only reason why hopkins can be word champion at his age is only because of many world titles with some titles held by people who have nothing special (cloud was clearly beaten by campilo who got destroyed by kovalev) so i really think that we make it a bit too much with hopkins – amazing how stil good he is yes but owise he only beat people who really have nothing special
and sorry but i still am waiting for hopkins fight which will not bore me to death – hard for me to make him one of best ever when i never really enjoyed any of his fights-

Love the sport- time will tell … But I totally disagree with you about Thurman
,Thurman is not even close as being as Miranda , Miranda can’t fight Thurman can,Thurman don’t waist punches he is very accurate
I would never be sold on Thurman if I was considering him as a big puncher only , he will be great if trains because I think he has everything to be great!

Sdot- you are exactly right! Thurman needed someone durable like zavec
I was so impresed with him against Quintana the way he was cuting the ring ..
You could tell that Thurman started boxing very early even though he is still green as a professional you could
Tell when in come to boxing generalship he has great experience and talent , he needs to work more on conditioning
To be ready for everyone , I just hope he stays diciplined and prepares himself 100% for each fight!

Love-the-Sport

Adrien? Adrien Bronner has knocked out everybody on the way to championship level. Adrien Bronner is a champion with the potential to be a great champion. Thurman took a step back in my mind. You are correct to say that you don’t need to knockout everybody to be a great prospect and great champion — but Thurman is a power puncher. That is what he does. Thurman is not Floyd Mayweather. Right now, Thurman to me looks like a bad version of Edison Miranda. Heavy Handed. Strong Body. Strong Legs. Good Natural Power. But not a champion.

Posted March 10, 2013 2:44 am

zaveck is good. Good doesn’t mean almost great. it means good. Yes he is better than average. Do you know how many boxers are out there? and out of that # how many have careers like Zaveck? You aren’t giving thurman his due for this fight. It was a solid step up win. This is the right level of progression for thurman at this point in his career if he wants to have any longevity in the sport.

Posted March 10, 2013 2:42 am

Thurman, if he wants to go to the next level, he should be trained by the David Haye people.

Posted March 10, 2013 2:40 am

Love the sport — lol I know zavec is not an elite but is “good” so being “good”
And losing 120 -108 I all three score cards is considered a good win for Thurman , who btw is not a champion yet
But is a best prospect in boxing today by far , Thurman dosent have to ko everyone e to be considered the best
,he is not a haveyweight he is welterweight for god sake!!!

Posted March 10, 2013 2:37 am

Love-the-Sport

In my opinion, Thurman has big heavy hands, strong body, strong legs, and above average natural power. This does not mean Thurman is an elite fighter or a championship fighter. Thurman showed holes in a 12 round decision against Zaveck. He got caught with right hands. He showed bad balance. He bounces with nervous energy like an amateur fighter. On the other hand, Thurman went to the body effectively and showed skill with both hands. But his ring generalship was inconsistent. His footwork moving in and out and left and right was good. I think a fighter like Zaveck can’t fight backwards. But Thurman did not push Zaveck backwards, he circled. Fight is over in 5-6 rounds if Thurman pushes Zaveck backwards and punishes him on the ropes. Unclear whether Thurman can adapt, can change, can be strong mentally.

Posted March 10, 2013 2:31 am

Love-the-Sport

Adrian? Do you know what the word “good” means? I don’t think it means what you think it means. The word “good” should mean BETTER THAN AVERAGE … NEAR THE TOP … ALMOST GREAT. I don’t think anybody, anybody, anybody would say that Jan Zaveck is Better than Average, Near the Top, Almost Great. Jan Zaveck is not good. Jan Zaveck is a mid-level veteran. He has never been considered an elite fighter. And Thurman does not, does not, does not have great boxing IQ. If Thurman had great boxing IQ he would knocked out a mid-level veteran.

Love-the-Sport

Thurman did not look like the best prospect of 2012. We can all give credit to Zavek for showing toughness — but the fact is that Zavek is not a hall of fame fighter, Zavek is not a championship fighter, and Zavek is not even really a top 10 fighter. Zavek is a middle of the road veteran and Thurman won — but he did not hurt a middle of the road veteran, he did not wobble the guy, and he for sure did not look like he would knock out Zavek. Fortunately for Thurman, there is no real competition at 147 — other than Mayweather and Mayweather is many years removed from ever fighting Thurman. I don’t think much of Timothy Bradley or Devon Alexander and Pacquiao is really a small fighter who hangs around 147 for big money fights. Thurman will be a champion — just not a very good champion.

Love-the-Sport, how is it bad for the sport? Any time something historical happens the sport gets shed in a good light. The fight tonight was a good fight too, not a foul fest or too much holding. Good technical boxing. Also boxing isn’t loosing anything to MMA. Look at the PPV numbers and you will see MMA doesn’t do any better and they don’t have many stars even as big as Hopkins.

Hopkins makes boxing boring. No wonder boxing is losing to MMA. Rhonda Roussey provides more excitement than Bernard Hopkins. I appreciate the skill — but there is nothing good about Hopkins still winning at 48.

Calzaghe’s only credible win was against Kessler. Even a lot of Europeans fans rate Calzaghe lower than Lewis, Eubank, even Hamed (Which I don’t agree with). Hamed was entertaining, but Calzaghe’s record is better, since he did beat more fighters and some great fighters, even if they were past it. Hamed retired after losing to one great fighter in Barrera.

Steward said, when he was commentating the Hopkins v Calzaghe, this fighter is making Hopkins work, Hopkins is not used it, then Hopkins tried that rubbish in the 10th round, he knew he was going to get stopped.

Hopkins did more but not enough for calzaghe… Period!

Posted March 10, 2013 1:54 am

Calzaghe is nothing compared to true greats. It’s about who you beat and WHEN you beat them. What’s Calzaghe’s greatest wins? A past prime Eubank, Jones, and yes even Hopkins, who he barely got by. Hopkins? the man has list of victories over champions and HOFs and he’s still doing it at 48. He’s known for mentally destroying fighters and ending their careers. Just ask Kelly Pavlik. There is no comparison. A prime Roy Jones would have KO’d Calzaghe, and a prime Hopkins would’ve done the same. Calzaghe himself, even admitted that he was facing a past prime Jones and Hopkins. So if you disagree with me, you’re also disagreeing with Calzaghe himself. Now what?

Calzaghe, beat Hopkins in a close fight, where Hopkins was moving up for the first time. That was good for Calzaghe, but it was not an overwhelming win, in fact the fight could have been a draw. Hopkins wanted the rematch, Calsaghe didn’t, end of story, leaving not a whole lot for the Brit fans to brag about, as much as they try.

Maybe HBO should hire smarter commentators besides Max & Jim, because not only did B-Hop take Cloud out his game he also took thise two fool out of theirs. B-Hop might not be as powerful puncher these commentators drool over, but to go in the ring and beat a guy wih more brain power than punching takes a unique individuals. Hopkins is on Cloud 9 now, it’s the peds.

How can you call that a bad fight? It had pretty good action and Hopkins put on a pretty good performance. Not a foul fest at all, just Hopkins putting on a clinic of the sweat science.

Should be pretty wide UD for Hopkins. Hopkins can always fight guys like Cloud. Hope they don’t make a fight with Ward though. That one would be ugly as all hell. I would love to see him fight Sergey Kovalev but that ain’t happening.

The Prince

Well done, Hopkins

What, Hopkins hasn’t showed his butt yet, like the Calzaghe fight.

Posted March 10, 2013 12:46 am

The Prince

So far, Hopkins is winning, but can he keep it up, or will his age betray him.

Posted March 10, 2013 12:39 am

The Prince

Hopkins is winning the fight, so far.

hookoffthejab

the fight that should have happened is dawson VS cloud ..

Posted March 10, 2013 12:19 am

The Prince

A younger Hopkins would have destroyed Cloud. Cloud is wasting time and hardly doing anything.

Thurman needs to practice his punching out of a wet paper bag, against the top fighters.

Posted March 10, 2013 12:06 am

Tomato Can

wow, Cloud is already giving Hopkins room to breath.

Posted March 10, 2013 12:03 am

Tomato Can

HAck, I could be wrong, but Hopkins truely looks his age this fight.

Here we go

Tomato Can

Prince yeah you’re right. unfortunately. someones going to have to give him a beat down in order for him to retire. To his credit, he’s los fights, but has never been beat down, not too shabby for a 25 year veteran.

hookoffthejab

last post was dedicated to boxtra ..”lesser”

Posted March 9, 2013 11:43 pm

Tomato Can

Prince, Cloud doesn’t seem to be the sharpest fighter out there, but I think even he knows, he can let Hopkins get comfortable in this fight. If he does that he’s going to lose. I think Hopkin’s age, will given in to Cloud’s youth. But really, Cloud is no Hopkins.

hookoffthejab

keith thurman looking “lesser” than when he stepped between the ropes he even threw in some running not looking as big a puncher as some had hoped …

Posted March 9, 2013 11:41 pm

The Prince

Tomato Can – Cloud should win it and finally retire Hopkins. But if Cloud let’s Hopkins get comfortable, Hopkins might pull off another victory. For Hopkins, someone is going to have to stop him to retire him.

Well Prince, Thurman had a good showing. What are your thoughts on the Hopkins/Cloud fight?

Posted March 9, 2013 11:36 pm

The Prince

Zaveck should have loaded up his shots before the final eleven seconds of the twelve round.

Agreed

Roxanne, Roxanne…

The Prince

Tomato Can – I’m doing good. Looks like Thurman has finally got to his man. Great performance so far.

Roxanne Shante, do an old school rap for me… Hit it!!!

Posted March 9, 2013 11:27 pm

Roxanne Shante

Bernard Hopkins, live on stage.

Posted March 9, 2013 11:24 pm

Tomato CAn

Hey Prince, how you doing? I think Thurman’s power is his calling. He’s difinately made Zaveck think about rushing in on him.

Posted March 9, 2013 11:22 pm

The Prince

Keith Thurman has a very good boxing IQ. But he’s getting tested tonight. Will he survive the twelve rounds.

Posted March 9, 2013 11:15 pm

Tomato Can

I hope Hopkins makes a great showing. Fighting for titles at 48 is no small feat.

Posted March 9, 2013 11:14 pm

Tomato Can

Hopkins is a 25 year vetrin of the sport. But it’s time to let the young bucks take over. It’s time for Cloud to prove his worth.

Terminator, Calzaghe, beat you up, ols skool.

Bing Crosby, David Bowie, Andre Ward.

Hopkins is getting odds so if I was in Vegas I would put a little money on him. Unless he has grown completely old he will easily school Cloud. Cloud has shown to be pretty average vs Campillo. Hopkins can still hit a target that doesn’t move and comes in straight lines. Hopkins knew what he was doing when he made this fight. Hopkins by a pretty easy UD.

Squared-Circle (a.k.a. LionKing)

I hope Cloud beats B-Hops ass into the ground and retires him once and for all.

Posted March 9, 2013 9:24 pm

largo

Cloud has to emulate Abner Mares to win.

Posted March 9, 2013 8:50 pm

largo

Cloud is the strongest 175 pounder in the world but to win he has to apply pressure & bodypunching from the first second of the fight; if he does, he has a chance but if he tries to box & head-hunting, he’ll get schooled by the oldman…

Hopkins does the Aztec 2 step, Calzaghe, drop, can’t handle that.
