(Calvin Brock pictured here delivering the right hand knockout blow to West)17.03.07 - By Jeff Bastasini: Heavyweight challenger Calvin Brock (30-1, 23 KO’s) erased some of the sting from his recent 7th round shellacking courtesy of Wladimir Klitschko by destroying Ralph West, a slightly paunchy journeyman fighter with eleven losses on his boxing record, in the 1st round at the American Bank Center, Corpus Christi. Brock, 32, started strong, snapping quick, sharp jabs at West’s face, and landing straight right hands, few of which he showed any effort at blocking with his gloves. It wasn’t long after when Brock connected with a beautiful right hand to the head of West, sending him to the canvas, where the referee decided to stop it rather than letting the one-sided bout continue.
As you can see from the photo, West, perhaps, wasn’t in the best of shape of his life, looking a little bearish and perhaps a good 25 lbs overweight. To be fair, though, it hardly would have mattered if he had come in a svelte 220, as he was just not in the same class as Brock, and it showed during every second of the short fight. continue l
