(Gerry Penalosa in photo) 11.08.07 - By Scott Frake: In a shocking upset, former Super flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa (52-6-2, 35 KOs) stopped WBO bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (34-6, 29 KOs) in the 7th round tonight at the Arco Arena in Sacramento. Penalosa, 35, was way behind in the fight, having lost the first six rounds on my scorecard when he suddenly landed a powerful left hook to the body of Gonzalez, sending him to the canvas a second later where he counted out by referee Pat Russell.
In the opening rounds, Gonzalez, 25, was all over Penalosa, showing almost zero respect as he poured it on looking for an early knockout against the veteran Penalosa. Up until the seventh, it looked as if Gonzalez was going to have easy time of it, since Penalosa hadn't been able to match Gonzalez's enormous workrate and was being whitewashed in the process. continue l
