Weights: Canelo 155, Angulo 154.5

Weights: Canelo 155, Angulo 154.5

The weight limit was increased to 155 lbs due to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s team asking for the weight increase. Canelo paid Angulo $100,000 for being a pound over, according to Fightnews. Canelo looked totally drained at 155. With that said, Alfredo Angulo also game in over the limit at 154.5. Canelo needs to think seriously about moving up to middleweight, because draining down to 154 to fight mostly welterweights isn’t going to work too much longer. With Canelo rehydrating to the low 170s, he’s definitely someone that should be fighting in the middleweight division. He should have made the move last year, but by hanging around at 154, Canelo got the fight against Floyd Mayweather last September.

It’s also allowed him to look better than he might actually be by having welterweights – Matthew Hatton, Kermit Cintron, Alfonso Gomez, Shane Mosley and Josesito Lopez – move up to 154 to fight him instead of Canelo fighting actual junior middleweights like Erislandy Lara.

Alvarez-Angulo: Will Canelo bounce back from his loss to Mayweather?

Alvarez-Angulo: Will Canelo bounce back from his loss to Mayweather?

(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) This Saturday on March 8th Canelo Alvarez will be taking on the hard hitting Alfredo Angulo. It will be Canelo’s first fight back since he suffered his first defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. If there is any doubt in Canelo that he can’t make a successful comeback I’d suggest he erase those thoughts now. Angulo is slow but does pack a good punch and if he senses that Canelo is on the defense he will attack.

Canelo possesses power as well and I believe him to be the far more superior boxer than Angulo. Although I must admit that under the wing of Virgil Hunter Angulo seems to be improving. If Angulo has the right game plan going into Saturday’s fight we can see a very competitive fight between the two heavy hitters.

Angulo to test his debilitating power on Canelo this Saturday

Angulo to test his debilitating power on Canelo this Saturday

Boxing fans will get a chance to see how good Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s punch resistance is this Saturday night in his Showtime pay-per-view clash against the hard-hitting Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is going to be a first for Canelo in terms of him facing an opponent that has power equal to his own, and it should give fans a good chance to see if Canelo can stand up to the kind of big power shots that Angulo will be hitting him with.

Angulo’s trainer Virgil Hunter has been very impressed with Angulo’s power ever since he started training him, and he thinks he’s got the kind of punch that could lay the 23-year-old Canelo out, especially if he’s able to get him into a fatigued state.

(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) SAN DIEGO — (Feb. 25, 2014) – Several dozen television camera crews, newspapers and web reporters, photographers, (video) bloggers and fans were on hand to watch popular former WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez during his media workout at House of Boxing on Tuesday in San Diego.

With Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya looking on, Canelo worked out for a little over an hour. He shadow-boxed, hit the mitts, did calisthenics, worked the speed bag, smacked the heavy bag, did stretching exercises, posed for photos, signed autographs and conducted copious amounts of interviews, some in groups and others one-on-one, as traditional Mexican music blared in the background.

2 thousand tickets left for Canelo-Angulo fight on March 8th

In what you would have to interpret as a negative sign, former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s March 8th fight against Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) still hasn’t sold out the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada despite having been on sale for quite some time. As you can see, there are still 2 thousand tickets remaining for the fight with a little less than 2 weeks to go before the bout. Considering that this fight is going to be sold on Showtime pay-per-view as well, this could mean that fight fans won’t be interested in purchasing it.

Alfredo Angulo, Virgil Hunter Interview Transcript

Virgil Hunter – Alfredo is very much up for this fight and into this fight. That’s not to say he wasn’t in any other bouts that he did, but we understand the magnitude of this opportunity and we intend to make the most of it.

I’m very pleased with the camp situation. We’re fortunate to have several of the guys in camp doing mini camps and conditioning, and because of that we’re able to provide Alfredo with a lot of different looks in sparring, which I feel complements the style that he has and he has the opportunity to pick up on various things that the styles offer.
