One of the knocks on former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) is that he’s been matched up with mostly welterweights or former welterweights by Golden Boy Promotions since he moved up to the 154 lb. division in 2010. In Canelo’s 11 fights at junior middleweight, he’s only fought 3 actual junior middleweights who had been fighting at that weight for most of their careers.

The other 8 fighters that Canelo has faced have been welterweights that either moved up to fight him for a payday or simply moved up because they weren’t competitive at 147 against the better fighters.

Schaefer not worried about Canelo-Angulo doing poorly on PPV

While many boxing fans are openly grumbling about the March 8th Showtime card headlined by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) vs. Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) being on Showtime pay-per-view given that both guys are coming off of losses, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer isn’t worried at all that the fight will bring in poor PPV numbers.

Schaefer thinks it’ll do okay because of the 23-year-old Canelo’s huge popularity in the United States following his one-sided loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September in a fight that really well at the gate and on PPV.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Alfredo Angulo signed for March 8th on Showtime PPV

Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) and Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) have both signed for their March 8th fight a the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The contracts were inked today and the fight is all set for Showtime pay-per-view. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is confident that it’ll be a PPV success due to the 23-year-old Canelo’s huge popularity in the U.S.

“The fight is done,” Schaefer said to ESPN. “Signed, sealed and delivered. Two of the most exciting fighters in the sport and it will be a toe-to-toe battle. That is what we are calling the card, ‘Toe-to-Toe.'”

Canelo to battle Alfredo Angulo on March 8th in Las Vegas, Nevada

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) will be playing it safe for his next fight by taking a confidence builder fight against Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) on March 8th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mexican news site Esto has broken the story about this match-up. The Canelo-Angulo fight is expected to be a pay-per-view bout on Showtime. It’s going to be interesting to see how much this fight will be going for on PPV, because both fighters are coming off of losses.

Canelo is headlining the card, and hopefully Golden Boy Promotions will stack the undercard with interesting fights to make it worth purchasing on PPV. For a main event fight, Canelo-Angulo is not an appealing fight when you’re talking about paying to see it. Of course, if Golden Boy chooses to have this fight on regular Showtime then this isn’t a bad tuneup fight for Canelo. But in no way should this be a PPV fight.

Ladies and gentlemen…it’s Showtime!

The historic Placita Olvera in downtown Los Angeles, CA was host to the anticipated Welterweight showdown between hard-punching Marcos Maidana and tough-as-nails Josesito Lopez this Saturday night 06/08/2013.

The Showtime Championship Boxing series is scheduled to deliver yet again another stacked fight card in the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. Given their past fights and performances, the main event easily promises to deliver fireworks.

The co-main event fight between Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara is another matchup that generates intrigue. Can “El Perro” Angulo find a way to use his punching power, along with the new skills acquired with a new trainer, to stop the slick Erislandy Lara? Or…will Erislandy Lara just be too slick, too quick for Angulo and deliver a boxing clinic?

By Jeff Sorby: It was confirmed by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer on Tuesday that WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo”Alvarez will be fighting on the same card as Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4th at the MGM Grand, but not against Mayweather. According to the LA Times, Canelo will face one of the following fighters: Alfredo Angulo, James Kirkland or Austin Trout.

Schaefer isn’t mentioning who the leading candidate is for the fight but the fact that Angulo and Kirkland are both Golden Boy fighters would seem to suggest that one of those two will ultimately get the fight with Canelo. Schaefer hasn’t seemed all that interested in a Trout-Canelo fight when asked about it in the media. He feels that Trout hasn’t done enough yet for the fight, although if Angulo or Kirkland is selected, you have to wonder exactly they’ve done in their careers to get the fight.

By Joseph Herron – On November 5th, 2011, the boxing world witnessed one of the best rounds of action in recent memory when Alfredo Angulo and James Kirkland battered each other for all three minutes of the opening stanza during their WBC semi-final eliminator in Cancun, Mexico.

Although both men were ostensibly hurt badly throughout The Ring’s “Round of the Year” for 2011, it was the Mexicali warrior who caught the brunt of the more meaningful exchanges on that fateful evening.

But “El Perro” was not only handed his second loss as a professional fighter. Most fight fans and boxing writers described the dramatic bout as one of the most brutal beatings of this era, and further labeled the destruction as potentially career-altering.

After almost a full calendar year of inactivity, Angulo will be stepping back into the ring this Saturday night, alongside heralded trainer Virgil Hunter, to try and repair some of “El Perro’s” dented mystique and checkered persona.

His November 10th assignment will be against Junior Middleweight prospect Raul “El Tigre” Casarez of the Texas/Rio Grande Valley. Though most boxing pundits give Angulo the clear advantage going into this “comeback” effort, is Casarez the right fighter for a rehabilitative outing?
