Juan Manuel Marquez set for August return; eyeing possible fights with new champ Horn, Cotto

Mexican legend and all time great Juan Manuel Marquez is five years older than Manny Pacquiao but both he and his equally legendary trainer Nacho Beristain think a fight with new WBO welterweight champ Jeff Horn, Pac Man’s (controversial) conqueror, is a good idea.

The 43 year old Marquez (really at an advanced age for a welterweight) is reported by ESPN Deportes to be returning to action against TBA in August; for his first fight since his May 2014 win over the tough Mike Alvarado. And after that, Beristain said that he likes the idea of his fighter going in with new champ Horn.

Juan Manuel Marquez talks possibility of facing Miguel Cotto in September or October, after May comeback fight

If it took place, it would be a great fight between two great fighters who are now in the twilight of their legendary careers: Juan Manuel Marquez against Miguel Cotto. And, in a piece over on ESPN.com, Dan Rafael has reported how Marquez, inactive since his May 2014 points win over Mike Alvarado, is in talks to face Cotto later this year.

Marquez vs. Cotto possible in 2016

Marquez vs. Cotto possible in 2016

By Carlos Ortiz: In a fight that would surely catch the imagination of the boxing world, there is a possibility that 42-year-old Mexican star Juan Manuel Marquez (57-7-2, 42 KOs) could return to the ring for a huge fight against 35-year-old middleweight Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) in 2016.

Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach likes the idea of Cotto fighting Marquez. It’s a fight that makes sense on many levels. Cotto was just beaten by a much larger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last November, and there are no real big money fights for Cotto right now. What Cotto is looking at is a lot of difficult fights against younger lions that wouldn’t give him the kind of money that he received in his fight against Canelo.

Juan Manuel Marquez to fight Brook in 2015?

Fernando Beltran and Ignacio Beristain (promoter and trainer for Marquez) have said that Juan Manuel will fight again and that it will be in 2015. At 41 years of age the Mexican legend has the right to be picky with his fights and having fought just once in 2013 and 2014 it is likely he will only take one fight for this year also.

Marquez has said that his final goal as a fighter would be to win a world title at 147 and become the first Mexican boxer to win titles in five weight divisions.

Khan adds Marquez and Bradley to his list of names he wants to fight

Amir Khan says that besides Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao, he’d like to add Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez to the list of guys he wants to face in the near future. Khan has been after a fight against Mayweather for ages now, but he’s not been fighting the preliminary guys that would get him the Mayweather fight unfortunately.

Instead of fighting big punchers like Kell Brook, Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter, Khan has been fighting the likes of Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander. This has led to Khan not picking up the name recognition in the United States that he needs for him to lure the likes of Mayweather to fight him.
