Photos: Tiffany Lam – The much anticipated rubber match between Americans “Mile High” Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23KO) and Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (33-2-1, 22KO) takes place this Saturday night in Alvarado’s hometown of Denver, Colorado. Both fighters have had a tough road since their second bout in early 2013 and find themselves in need of a big win. Alvarado took plenty of punishment in losses to the hard-hitting Ruslan Provodnikov and Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez. For Rios, there was the shutout decision loss to Manny Pacquiao, and then a tough disqualification victory over the dirty Argentinian Diego Chaves. This afternoon at the final press conference before Saturday night, the two proud warriors promised fireworks.

Alvarado vs. Rios 3: Who will be the last man standing?

Alvarado vs. Rios 3: Who will be the last man standing?

A third installment of the spirited ongoing battle between Mike Alvarado vs. Brandon Rios should be, barring a draw, decided this Saturday night on HBO. The fighter that has more left in the tank will prevail in this matchup of modern day warriors. The rubber match will take place in Denver, Colorado and Alvarado hopes this bout ends differently in front of his hometown faithful.
This pair of Mexican-American boxers more than lived up to their heritage’s long history of entertaining slugfests. In their first tilt Alvarado took the early lead only to succumb to Bam Bam’s pressure and power, losing by TKO in the 7th round.

In their second affair Alvarado looked sharp in the opening frame until a Rios jab shook up Mike in the 2nd round. At the end of that round Alvarado was cut above his right eye and seemed already shopworn at such an early stage of the fight.

Mike Alvarado v Brandon Rios III Preview

Mike Alvarado v Brandon Rios III Preview

Mike Alvarado (34-3 23KO’s) faces Texan born Brandon Rios (32-2-1 23KO’s) at the 1st Centre in Colorado on the 24th January. Both fighters vow to make the third fight that little bit more spectacular, which bodes well as their last two meetings produced fireworks.

Alvarado won their most recent bout in March 2013 by unanimous decision. He threw a colossal 860 punches with 260 connecting. As of recent Alvarado’s focus remains questionable after a string of events unfolded. He was arrested on the 3rd January when a hand gun was found in the glove box of his hummer. With the distraction undoubtedly going to take its toll, there’s still the strong case that it could well spark the fuse to Alvarado, packing every punch that bit harder.

Brandon Rios: The Alvarado fight is a do-or-die match for me

YouTube video
Former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios (32-2-1, 23 KOs) sees his fight against Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) this month as a do-or-die fight for him when the two meet up on HBO on January 24th at the 1stBank Center, Bloomfield, Colorado, USA. Rios has recent losses to Manny Pacquiao and Alvarado, and what should have been a loss to Diego Chaves.

It’s safe to say that Rios hasn’t fought well since his 7th round knockout win over Alvarado nearly three years ago in October of 2012. It’s unclear if the punishment that Rios took in the first fight deteriorated his physical skills or if he’s simply faced better opposition since the first fight. Whatever the case, Rios is no longer shining like he once did, and there’s major questions about how much he had left in the tank.

Marquez Sizzles and Pops in Win over Alvarado

Marquez Sizzles and Pops in Win over Alvarado

Forty year old Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez’ (JMM) combinations were sharp and fast. His punches hissed through the air and then crackled when they reached their target. To Mike “Mile High” Alvarado, they must have sounded like the ear popping you hear and feel with a change of altitude.

Early on both men seemed overly cautious, as though they were determined not to provide counter punch opportunities. JMM was first to explore things. He poked and prodded a bit, and when there was no retaliation, he cranked things up a bit. Mike remained in the cautious stage. The problem with that strategy was he was losing rounds, because JMM is not only a great counter puncher, he’s also pretty damn good at leading too. As soon as JMM realized Mike wasn’t going to return his shots, he naturally picked up the pace. Mike kept his gloves up tight in defensive mode, but that wasn’t enough. Mike found out the hard way that there’s too much area to cover when JMM is throwing.
