Daniel Jacobs/Peter Quillin Title Clash Confirmed for December

The long mooted clash between WBA (reg) 160 lb champion Daniel Jacobs and unbeaten fellow New Yorker, Peter Quillin, is finally looking set for December when the two will meet in a ‘Battle of Brooklyn,’ to determine the borough’s top dog at middleweight.

Promoter Lou DiBella has told ESPN.com he is looking at December 5th as the provisional date for the clash and has the Barclays Centre on hold as contracts and other minutiae are ironed out between the Al Haymon advised fighters, yet while this date admittedly isn’t concrete just yet, he insists the fight most definitely is.

Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (32-0-1, 22 KOs) knocked out Michael Zerafa (17-2, 9 KOs) in the fifth round on Saturday afternoon from Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC. Peter Quillin: 'I Can't Afford to Overlook Michael Zerafa'

After his hard fought draw with Andy Lee back in April, in which the champion kept the WBO middleweight title, and he voided his right to win it on the scales, New York’s Peter Quillin (30-0-1, 22ko) returns to the ring in a routine, 10 round, 163 lb catch weight affair against Australian unknown Michael Zerafa (17-1, 9ko) on Saturday night.

Many are finding it hard to get excited about the PBC on NBC clash that for all intents and purposes, and with respect to Zerafa, is set to be a complete and utter mismatch, merely designed to warm Quillin up for a future date with fellow New Yorker and WBA (reg) 160 lb titlist, Daniel Jacobs – a fight that complete upset aside, is mooted for December.

Peter Quillin v Michael Zerafa on for September 12th

It won’t be welcome news to anybody complaining about a lack of meaningful fights from PBC, but former WBO 160 lb champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin will face the unheralded and little known Australian fighter Michael Zerafa on September 12th in Connecticut on a PBC on NBC card that will also feature unbeaten Jermell Charlo squaring off against IBF 154 lb champion Cornelius “K-9” Bundrage.

Quillin, who missed weight in his last fight – a draw against “Irish” Andy Lee in April, hasn’t been the most active of late, for various reasons fighting only 4x (inc. Lee) in the last 2 years, and is looking to set up a showdown with WBA (reg) 160 lb champ and fellow New Yorker Daniel Jacobs for early next year.

Left-Hook Lounge Mailbag: Garcia/Peterson, Quillin/Lee/GGG, & Gary Russell Jr!

Markus H. (Orlando, FL): You were pretty down on Gary Russell Jr. in the past. I wanted to know what were your thoughts about his recent performance and what do you see next for him?

Vivek W. (ESB): There was a point in which I just felt that Russell simply wasn’t showing any evolution. We knew he possessed great speed and a certain level of skill, but we never really saw it translate against the level of opposition good enough to bring all of it out. After seeing him coast to easy victories over guys who had no business in the ring with him, it simply got old. All that being said, just as he once warranted criticism, I think at this stage he clearly deserves praise! And a lot of it!

In an exciting fight, WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) got up off the canvas twice to rally in the second half of the fight to salvage a 12 round majority draw against former WBO 160 pound champion Peter Quillin (31-0-1, 22 KOs). Lee knocked Quillin down in the 7th round with a right hook to the head. That knockdown negated one of Quillin’s earlier knockdowns.
