Nevada Commission, Vargas in Steroid Flap
27.09 - Paul-John Ramos: Junior middleweight Fernando Vargas, who suffered an 11th-round TKO loss to Oscar De La Hoya on September 14th, has been carded by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after testing positive for anabolic steroids in his post-fight urinalysis. As reported by the Associated Press, the urine sample of Vargas (22-2, 20 KOs) gave a positive reading for stanozolol, a drug that track runner Ben Johnson used in winning a gold medal at the 1988 Olympics. A formal complaint will be filed by the Nevada Commission next week, after which Vargas will be given 30 days to appeal. The alleged drug use comes as a blow to the success of De La Hoya-Vargas, which was held before 11,000 fans at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and watched by more than 900,000 via pay-per-view.
