Wilson-Harrison on Mundine-Echols Undercard Aug 6

By Tony Nobbs

22.07 - Queensland's Colin 'Kid' Wilson will fight 2000 Olympic Gold Medallist Audley Harrison on the Anthony Mundine-Antwun Echols undercard at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Wednesday August 6.

Wilson, 31, a former Australian and OPBF Heavyweight Champion, has victories over capable opponents in Justin Fortune and Jimmy Thunder and is also scheduled to fight for the vacant Australian Title on September 19 against Roger Izon, a brother of David, on a Jamie Myer Fox sport show at Tweed Heads.

Now living in the mining town of Emerald "in the middle of the scrub" the Jack Hornrery trained Wilson said he's "looking forward" to the Harrison fight and is "quietly confident of getting the better of him".

"I sparred him before the Olympics when his team was based on the Gold Coast. He's a nice bloke, a good boxer and a big awkward bloke. It should be a good hard fight for the crowd before the world title".

Last December, after promoters found it to be a (almost) mission impossible finding an Aussie willing to face the come backing Thunder in Melbourne, the always reliable Wilson put his hand up and was awarded with the best victory of his eleven year career, giving the big punching Samoan a ten round drubbing.

"Really, he didn't show me much at all. He was very slow and predictable. I just kept my jab in his face and made life easier for myself. Everything went good for me that night".

Winning the Australian Title from Vince Cervi in February 1997, Wilson won three more fights -including the WBO Asia-Pacific Belt- before losing the National Title to Joe Bugner the following January via unanimous decision in front of his hometown fans at Jupiter's Casino on the Gold Coast.

"Joe was too experienced. But I'm really focused on winning the Australian Title again. That is what I want. And it'd be great to go in with another good win". said Wilson.

Wilson won the OPBF Title by beating Lennox Lewis victim Justin Fortune in six rounds in 2000 and lost a controversial decision to Bob Mirovic for the Australian Title in May last year.

Turning pro as a Lt. Heavyweight he split fights with future two time Super Middleweight world title challenger Ricky Thornberry in 1993, scoring a five round knockout and dropping a six round decision. Colin has previously boxed on one Mundine under-card, in April '01, outpointing Panga Laulau over eight rounds at Carrara, Qld.
