JANIOLA, MAYOL KO THAIS

Dennis Principe @ Ringside

17.12 - TAGUIG, Metro Manila, Philippines – Two undefeated and world-rated Cebuano pugs showed their readiness to fight for a world crown next year by stopping their respective Thai opponents Saturday night at the Cantada Sports Center here.

Philippine Lightflyweight champion Wyndell “Braveheart” Janiola, currently rated number 5 in the IBF and number 8 in both the WBC and WBA, stopped Pigmy Muangchaiya by succcessive left hook to the body in the 7th round.

The 22-year old Janiola (13-0, 5 KO’s) dominated the Thai opponent from the opening round with crisp left jabs and right straights. In the seventh round, Janiola unleashed a powerful left hook to Muangchaiya’s body which made the brawny Thai crumple to the canvas.

Muangchaiya was able to beat the referee’s count but Janiola did not waste time in going for the kill by letting loose another crushing left hook to the body which floored the Thai for the second time. Muangchaiya’s corner immediately went up to the ring to signal the end of the fight.

In the other main event, Philippine minimumweight champion Rodel “105 lb. Dynamite” Mayol (WBC #7) needed two rounds and one solid body shot to halt Chiewchan Dhanasawate. Mayol’s powerful blows was evidently heard as it hit his Thai opponent to the delight of the capacity crowd.

Janiola will now set his sights at capturing the International Boxing Organization (IBO) title versus current champion Mhinkhiza Meyekeni of South Africa. The title fight will be held February 14 in South Africa.

On the other hand, Mayol (12-0, 10 KO’s) got a big boost in his budding career as renowned Japanese promoter Akihiko Honda expressed interest in promoting a regional or world title fight involving the Mandaue-born fighter sometime next year.
