Mayorga's character is just that: a character. Doesn't matter to me that he may have been a degenerate gangster before or even during his boxing career. His unsportmanlike behavior in the ring and with the press is contrived and calculated, and is 100% entertainment. Vargas is transparent: you can tell he really is as arrogant and machismo-obsessed as he acts at press-cons. Really, you're right, no extracurricular activities should come into play judging a fighter. But, the reports of Vargas acting like a tough guy and a proud macho dick out on the street just mirror and emphasize the way he is in the boxing world - and don't tell me it's a character because he's an open fucking book. Whatever Mayorga does outside cannot be viewed in conjunction with his professional antics because they are complete fiction. The man makes up for his lack of skill in the sweet science with an unflappable thespian calm and comic timing that would make Seinfeld jealous.

Good post. I can see where Kirk is coming from, but I agree with you. I think Mayorga goes home at the end of the day a can probably laugh at himself and not believe his own b.s... Vargas on the other hand strikes me as a guy that stands really believes he is this Mexican cholo type. He takes it a little further.
