What fighters can you think of that one moment they were considered still on top or in their prime, and then BOOM, they were considered shot or damaged goods. IMO the ones that come to mind are:
1. Riddick Bowe-After the 3rd Holyfield fight he was considered the best of the Heavyweights, and then he fought Golota twice and was considered damaged goods.
2. Donald Curry-After Lloyd Honeyghan got through with him, he seemed to plummet real fast.
3. Lloyd Honeyghan-Like the man he conquered, he seemed to fall apart after Marlon Starling got through with him.
Anymore guys you can think of?

Roy Jones
Dempsey (although that night lasted a good few years)
Leonard (see above)

Rodrigo Valdes Fought the great Monzon tooth and nail for two fights, then one vacant title against Bad Bennie Briscoe. Then defended against the very forgetable Hugo Corro, and lost by wide decision. Followed him all night and couldn`t let his hands go. Just lost it all that night... All i remember Gil Clancy saying that night was `he just can`t get off`...

I hate to say it, but who would have thought that Ali was so fucking shot when he came back against Holmes? Only landed 10 punches in 10 rounds, and ironically was paid 10 million for the fight...

WRONG! Ali was SHOT! YES!! But he took a cut in pay, and saw less than 6 million for Holmes in 1980......... Ali was a hoax in 1980....... I'm so bummed....

Jersey Joe Walcott was another, in his rematch with The Rock everybody was expecting WW3 again, with it being a see-saw cliffhanger from bell to bell, but what happened was....two hits, Rocky hitting Walcott and Walcott hitting the floor.

AGAIN! Joe Walcott was caught with a flush uppercut by Marciano in the early going. However, Walcott still had his wits.... J.W. f@#ked up the count and blew the refs toll............ Walcott COULD HAVE carried on.. Walcott was NOT really out of it....... The count was sorta' quick.........:think

All I know is this, everybody believed he was as good as four time heavyweight champion when he stepped into the ring with Holmes, but from the moment the bell rang...it was clear he was a mere ghost of himself...

Ironically enough, I think it was also the only time on camera that Ali cussed an opponent, his final words to Holmes before the fight was "I'll fuck you up!"

I am the BIGGEST "Ali" nutgrabber in history........ I know he looked great in the pictures.... BUT! His diet and meds screwed him up--BAD! I only figured it out later, after the smoke screen......:fire

..........Simply not true. The odds for Holmes-Ali opened at 3-1 and closed (predictably, as they tend to right before big fights) at 6 1/2 to 5 1/2, in favor of Holmes.

This was of course taken not only by virtue of the performances of the young, springy Holmes leading up to the fight, but also Ali's very noticeable degradation in skills dating nearly six years before that.

It was no surprise to anyone.

I honestly did not think a fighter could be so shot, so done as when Ali stepped in that ring to be beat down by Holmes that night. A very sad night for boxing.

I REALLY felt bad for Larry Holmes, he was put in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation by taking that fight.

And to think, Fenech had trouble sleeping at night for 16 years, until their third fight when he finally "beat" Nelson.

Concerning Ali v. Holmes, yes Ali was shot.

But didn't he look better in the Berbick fight?

A) He was fighting a lesser fighter

And

B) He had stopped taking the meds that gave him so many problems in the interim.

What are you talking about? Ali was shot after Frazier 3, a long time before Holmes. Some would argue he lost his prime skills long even before that.

I agree Ali became shot after Manila, where as Mark Kram said, he came as an "am" and left as a "was".

In a rare moment of candor, Ali himself pinpointed Manila as the probable onset of his physical problems attributable to boxing.

By the time of his bout with Holmes, Ali had badly deteriorated, and his abysmal performance was due more to the effect of his taking an erroneously prescribed thyroid medication. Of course, he would have lost anyway, and perhaps it was just as well that Thyrolar sapped his energy; there will always be somewhat of an alibi for that awful night, although the effects of the pills could have been tragic.

I would propose Neon Leon Spinks as a better candidate for becoming shot practically overnight, certainly after the Qawi fight, although before that mediocrity and inconsistency were already his middle names.

Yeah, Taylor actually looked decent a few months after Chavez in the rematch with Ramos, and then when he moved up to beat Davis for a 147 lb. title.

He was already slipping, but I thought that was a poor move to put him in there with Norris.

I do not know, he did not look the like real pre Chavez Taylor in either the Ramos or Davis fights IMO.

Jimmy Young had a surprisingly short prime too, if I recall...

But was not shot IMO, nor KO's; as he won their comeback of the year reward for his 1981 run.

Perhaps more bubble burst than completely shot, but neither Camacho (post Rosario) and Breland (post StarlingI) were ever quite the same again.

Honeyghan was shot post VacaII.

Julian Jackson, he had a few small blips along the way but nothing his neuclear warheads couldn't handle.. But the night he lost to Gerald McClelland in las vegas, he never ever looked quite the same, he lost once again in the rematch and although he did fight for titles after, he did lose his footing at the highest level .. finally losing to Verno Phillips and Anthony Jones.. His eyesight didn't help much either.. I used to watch him sparr under the watchful eye of Johnny Tocco, he was a monster physically but you vertually had to point him in the direction of his opponent at times, his eye glasses were like the bottom of Beer Bottles.. He once asked me to read the ring magazine ratings to him after training because he couldn't see the type..

Terry Norris was being scheduled for a De La Hoya mega fight until he got knocked out in a warm up match with unheralded Keith Mullings. After that he hardly won a fight.

William Guthrie was considered a threat by some to Roy Jones with a tough guy gangsta persona and impressive KO record until he put his title on the line against veteran blown up middleweight Reggie Johnson. He left the ring on a stretcher after that one and was stopped in his next fight with a used up Michael Nunn and never threatened again.

Surely Roy Jones is the best example of this ever? Because he burned off 20lbs of muscle after Ruiz, he was nothing like the same guy in the 1st Tarver fight, and once Tarver realized this he brutally exposed this in the 2nd fight.
