Who is your favourite British boxer of all time and why?

kosaros

Nigel Benn

The fight against McClellan explains why.

Joe Calzaghe

He never loses.

Obviously Audley is your first choice, but Benn is a good #2.

Joe Calzaghe.

Followed his career from the start.

Love his attitude, his fighting style, he can box or go into the trenches when need be and he's overcome career threatening hand injuries to get where he's at which a lot of people forget.

Keeps himself to himself and some people have a go because he's boring but it's a good quality to have when you're that famous but don't see the need to put yourself in the limelight all the time and put on an act in front of the cameras unlike some other fighters I could mention.

Think he will preserve that 'o' until retirement?

Fair enough, honestly I'm undecided about Calzaghe personality wise, I get the feeling he may be a big of an arrogant twat, but I may be wrong.

Did you see the Calzaghe vs. Thornberry fight on Nuts TV last night?

TFFP

Yes in all likelihood, but I can't see into his mind to determine whether he's likely to fight on one fight too many. He seems to have his head switched on about this.

Lennox Lewis. I loved the way he got under the skin of the American critics. (The thrashing of Michael Grant is one of my all time favourite boxing moments)

No missed it mate I was watching the show about him on Setanta.

If I remember rightly it was one of his below par performances though. He had 3 or 4 of them in succession after Eubank.

How many is 1 too many do you think?

I'm kind of hoping for a good domestic against Froch before Joe calls it a day.

nigel benn. all action, hard hitting, but a little vunerable too, made every fight so exciting. he was genuinely passionate too, let people get right under his skin and then had the tear up he promised. awesome fighter....

It was quite entertaining, this Thornberry charecter had a massive heart, everyone thought he was going to get blasted in the first round, including him (he put his hands up at the bell at the end of the first - as if to celebrate) but he went to the distance, honestly Joe nearly had him early on and then just got lazy, he wasn't really trying, Frank ****** was screaming at Joe to knock the dude out, it was an odd fight.

One too many is one more after you start to look like you should just quit.

There were signs against Hopkins. I still think the signs were there, but some of it is being lost in Hopkins beating Pavlik and proving himself to be elite, still. How much of that was Hopkins and how much Calzaghe is hard to say.

If he looks bad against Jones he should quit right there. If he doesn't look bad he should think about it, and then quit.

I'm going to say Hamed.

A one-off.

His fights, his ringwalks, his interviews... Love him or hate him - how could you not want to watch him.

I think if he dominates Jones then he could well be persuaded for one final fight in Cardiff and possibly a massive domestic matchup against Froch.

If he loses then its a rematch with Jones in Cardiff.

If he wins a decision but it's not impressive then he'll probably retire.

Hamed was a special, once in a lifetime fighter, amazing reflexes, power from nothing, speed, entertainment, excitement - the guy is a legend.

The thinking man's choice.

I just liked that tongue in cheek arrogance, he was a great fighter but just bumped into MAB just as he was losing interest in the game. Still a great career though.

Obviously Audley is your first choice, but Benn is a good #2.

No nigel benn is number 1 at the moment, but once audley has carved out his great legacy by unifying the titles vs david haye at wembley in front of 90,000 people then he obviously automatically goes to number 1 and should do on everyone else's list.

I think the arrogance was a front, a persona, for the crowds, entertainment value. Out of the ring he is supposed to be a pretty quiet guy.

nigel benn for the excitement, his vulnerabilities as a man and a fighter, the mclellan fight, his bravery, the fact that he didnt give a fuck where or who he fought, the one liners, the power in both fists , everything about him. i could go on but it'll sound a bit gay. my favorite fighter of all time .

Yeah and that occasion he was a total idiot dickhead who fucked up and made a huge mistake. I've never made one that big, but I've made plenty myself and been a dick head on occasion also. Can't judge a man's entire life and personality based on one incident though.

well he tried to do himself in. after the watson and eubank defeats he sank into depression but came back. and he was apparently a bit of a cunt.

not saying he was best ever or anything...but my favourite...
micheal watson..

he had bags of courage..a great style to watch...
it was a great thinking performance to outfox nigel benn when they fought...
and although totally outclassed by mike mccallum he showed so much courage and kept finding reserves through the fight when you thought he was gone...
and the eubank fights speak for themselves...

good post, watson was a special fighter. they have the last round of that mcallum fight on youtube. i watched it as a kid and all i can remember is being heartbroken cos watson got fucked up. but watching that clip he is still goading mcallum in in the last round, still landing shots and you can tell he has mcallums full respect. he only went down when he was physically exhausted. for some reason as well when he's lying on the deck something doesnt seem quite right, maybe a warning of what was to happen ?
