Who is the best referee? Joe Cortez :rofl:rofl:rofl Wasn't he the one who recently who stopped a fight and then watched one of the fighters roll around on the floor for 10 minutes with blood pumping from a gaping cut.
He didn't allow anybody to treat him, but instead waited to be instructed to disqualify the other guy.

When asked to explain his frankly bizarre and bad refereeing, all could offer was "Safety first, safety first", with a stupid grin on his face.

I appreciated his efforts in the Hatton/Mayweather fight.

TFFP put Cortez down for the same I reason I did. For a joke...;O)I can see that you were joking, but I'm not so sure "Firm but fair" TFFP was.

(That is Cortez's catchphrase, isn't it?)

TFFP
11-04-2008, 07:38 PM
I think Cortez was firm but fair, by the laws of boxing. Excessive holding is illegal. If you can preemptively prevent clinches - bonus.

Okay, his last fight with the Soto DQ wasn't ideal. But he was a great ref for many years which shouldn't be forgotten.

Yep that his catchphrase (along with "I'm a homer and I'm hopeless"), I'd hope TFFP was just having a laugh...;)

I think cortez was a good ref until old age set in, think before the hatton fight if anyone had any real problems with the way he had done things,

I think cortez was a good ref until old age set in, think before the hatton fight if anyone had any real problems with the way he had done things, I agree, he was a decent ref but the inconsistencies in between how he handled the Hatton-PBF and Hopkins-JC bouts and then the Soto fuck up means he really should retire IMHO. Thats the last 3 major fights he handled, I'd guess he'll get eased aside over the next year or so.
