View Full Version : How do you rank Mike Tyson and your age?

I have him at #5 on my all time heavyweight list. Outstanding power, exlent defense about 10 defenses of his tittle. I'm 35 years old.
My reason for asking about age is that I got a feeling that people around my age are going to rank him higher than those who are both younger and older. I have decided to put this theory to the test.
Russell

It's a sound theory.
I think I'd rank him somewhere in the lower top ten. 7-10, somewhere in there if I were to make a list.
I'm just shy of 21 years old.

Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, I just found him to be overrated. Put him in front a real fighter, like, say Evander Holyfield, and he's beaten. it pisses me off when Tyson fanbois (not accusing any of you of being such) say that he's the greatest of all time and would knock everybody out if he fought in their time when he isn't nowhere near that label and guys like Ali would make him look silly.
He's top ten.

I wonder tough - how many fighters who fought at HW - even if they are not known for that weight - would be in your 100.
Remeber guys like Wilde, Jones, Toney, Kid Lewis, Fitzsimmons etc. etc.

Perhaps a reaction has set in too far the other way among some people.
We hear people saying that he would fold if anybody stood up to him, that he only won because his oponents were scared, and that he never really beat anybody.
I dont buy this.

im 23, i have ranked him as high as 6 at times in the past, lets say top ten for the sake of this thread.
If there is an aspect of the aim of this thread that is based on establishing if any of us have a fondness of Tyson, then let me say, i will be difficult to top there.

I found this list from about two years ago.
1 - Robinson
2 - Duran
3 - Armstrong
4 - Ali
5 - Whitaker
6 - Ray Leonard
7 - Louis
8 - Chavez
9 - Hagler
10 - Jones
I probably had never seen any footage of Robinson or Armstrong then. I was just going off word of mouth and in the case of Whitaker and Jones, the small amount of boxing that I had seen. It's ridiculous how much you can learn in such little time with the internet at your disposal.

I'm 28 and would put him in the lower end of my HW top 10, probably somewhere from 7-10.
In his prime he mostly fought B or C level fighters, (if not worse), and sometimes looked ordinary even then. Add in how quickly his tools and capabilities fell apart once his original team was gone and the mental instability and I have a real hard time ranking him any higher than that.
In H2H matchups he presents problems for many fighters, but even H2H, I'm tempted to say there's a lot of guys that would just let him shoot his bolt in the early rounds and then dominate him later. (Tyson had decent enough stamina, and sometimes finished well late, but even at his best and when they were still together Rooney used to say that he just wasn't the same fighter after 6 rounds or so).

Just out of my top five and I am 50, after the Ali era no one really knew who the HW champ was until Tyson came along this may be hard for younger posters who didn't live through the Ali era to understand but it was true.
In hindsight Holmes was the standout and when you look at his resume he must be ranked as an all time great but at the time he didn't catch people's imagination and was an unpopular champ amidst all the other alphabet champs.
Then along came Tyson cutting a swathe through the lot of them, a real fighting man in the mode of Dempsey, Liston and Marciano. Its crap that Tyson fought B and C level fighters he fought the best out there at the time and if only we had someone like him now.
Then along ca

Beat me to it... Ali MUST rank higher than Gene Tuney, absolutely must, no matter which criteria you value the most when judging the ATGness of fighters.
Ps. Im suprised by your age, we dont always agree but I will admit you are really knowledable for 18.

I ranking him about 11-12 based on career accomplishments. H2h I'd rank him 5-6 although admittedly, like everyone else when he was at peak he appeared indestructable.
I'm one of the old guys checking in at 45.
i say 95% of the time tyson beats 95% of heavyweights...his savage offense, handspeed, footspeed, elusive bob and weave peek a boo style made him hard to catch yet immediately able to go on hellacious offensive...a great finisher and, in his VERY brief peak, almost..i say almost..unstoppable......
oh and im 39 and have only recently started to feel this way after having studied tysons fights...the man was, again, briefly, a fuckin wrecking ball....vs spinks..vs biggs..vs holmes...(a holmes who was rusty but not shot as his later career showed..)..he was a phenom...

Mike is not even close top 10, I would say at best top 20. I have him at 19, and I am 37 years old. Bottom line is Mike lost almost every time it mattered, he was great at beating up fat bums or 175lb fighters but when he faced real top heavy weights he lost almost every time.
At 200lbs or less I think he would have been top 1-2 of all time but who cares about that division.

Mid 30's for me. I rate Tyson around #10-13 on an all time heavyweight ranking list. There are no cream puffs on ATG lists.
Tyson might be the #1 guy vs tier two opponents. Tyson could blow out journeyman, and fringe contenders as well as anyone I have seen.
My trouble with Tyson is he was never a mentally tough fighter and lost his biggest legacy fights badly. Some say the prison time took away from Tyson. While there is some truth to this, I have also seen Tyson look good post prision, and struggle a bit pre Buster Douglas.
