Since there's been some extremely insightful and refreshing talk on the Rocky universe lately, I figured some discussion on match-ups with fighters from that universe would be welcome.

How would Drago go against, say, Clubber Lang?

A prime Apollo Creed vs. the Rocky that came in to fight Drago? Basically both of them at their absolute peaks.

Was Rocky himself past his best by the time he fought Apollo, with 60 fights to his credit, 20 of them losing efforts? Did it become at that point will over skill because of what his body had been through?

Clubber vs. Tommy Gun?

Rocky was old as shit when he fought Drago. Far past his best. As for who would win between Lang and Drago, good question. Lang has the edge in power and professional experiance, but Drago probably has the edge in everything else. Lang gassed after 3 rounds against Rocky, that's pathetic for a proffesional fighter. I think Drago keeps him on the end of his long jab for a few rounds before polishing him off with his right hand, Klitschko style.

Drago-Lang is tough but I'll favor Clubber. Both guys are huge punchers, Clubber probably more so, look at the damage he gave Balboa in their first fight in 2 short rounds. Even in their rematch he came closer to finishing off Rocky than Drago did. Rocky beat Lang by having the greatest jaw in the history of the world and using his newfound slickness to sort of "rope a dope" Clubber making him miss and became fatiqued. Drago was not by any stretch slick and didn't have the defensive skills to avoid Lang like Balboa. Dragos power always keeps him in it but look at the amount of punishment it took for the best Rocky that ever fought to take out the unmotivated and content Clubber Lang. No one takes Clubber out with a single shot and he also had more heart than Drago. I'll pick Lang by a 4th round KO.

I don't think the Balboa that fought Drago was at his peak, he was becoming faded at that stage. He was too slow to even catch robot Drago, prime Rocky was the one trained by Apollo that took out Clubber Lang. In a matchup between him and prime Creed who we never saw, i'll favor Creed, barely. I don't think Rocky was past his best against Apollo, not even close. If anything he had yet to reach his peak.

Clubber Lang takes out Tommy Gunn in one round. Gunn is Rocky with less heart and a much, much worse chin, and Lang split wins with Balboa.

Lang gassed because he was throwing non stop full power haymakers at Balboa who was avoiding all of them. Drago doesn't possess nearly enough defensive skills or savvy to do that. Lang also didn't train for the Balboa rematch, he fell into the trap that he thought he was unbeatable. The Lang that fought Balboa first was an entirely different monster.

Lang was beast anD IMO, would have beaten all of them prime for prime maybe except for a prime Creed.

We never, ever saw a primed Apollo Creed. And what he had was still to much for the physically primed Rocky Marciano. Creed is the best of the bunch, though Drago's size and mobility would probably always have given him problems (if not death).

Prime Creed beats prime Balboa, Lang, Drago
Prime Balboa beats prime Lang, Drago
Prime Drago beats prime Lang.
Lang gets the short straw.

What about Gunn and Dixon? Just not worth mentioning in the scheme of things?

Gunn would get brutalised by Lang, beaten and broken

I too, agree that Creed was the best, always have thought this. But in actual h2h terms, on his best night, Balboa cannot be beaten for me, HE was an up-rising of nature.

The movies are called 'Rocky', not 'Apollo', for a reason!

Balboa beats them all at his best, because the man could get up from 47 knockdowns and score a knockout. Creed was at his best in the second Balboa fight, he totally dominated the fight and looked brilliant... but he still couldn't get the W.

Agreed, but he did go 1 and 1 with Rocky. And lets be honest, the first fight shouldnt have been a SD, that was a landslide in terms of rounds won for Apollo!

They should be called Clubber.

I totally agree that Creed was the best of them and he knew what would be needed to beat Lang. If I have to rank them in their prime it would be.
1. Apollo Creed
2. Rocky Balboa (Trained by Creed)
3. Clubber Lang
4. Ivan Drago ( to stiff and boring)
5. Tommy Gunn
6. Mason (Can´t remember his name)

I love these movies and Rocky III is the best of them in my opinion.

The fight I wanted to see: Creed - Lang. That would be Ali - Frazier 4,
All the best

Clubber Lang was by far the best of the lot head to head.

Balboa was a limited fighter with good skills. He defeated Creed by an unusual chance, then hid behind his title.

Lang exposed him.

He won the rematch against an unfocused Lang, by luck, but was obviously a physical wreck after that.

Why is it obvious that he was a wreck?

In his next fight he went up against a Soviet amateur with no profesional experience. He was battered from pillar to post and won by a late rally.

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After that he retired to avoid further punishment.

There was a farce with Mason Dixon who carried him.

I've always thought Lang would murder both Creed and Drago. Gunn is just a slower version of Lang and would die. Union Kane gets knocked out in the first round, Dixon in two.

He was beaten at his best, by a past prime and under-prepared Creed at that.

Why's that, eh?

Why's that, eh?

It's because he put on one of the worst and one of the best performances in the film series, in his only two fights. He demolished Rocky like no one ever did, absolutely shattered his chin like it was nothing, kept him down for a ten count and beat him more convincingly than anyone ever did in the first fight, but he he fought like a retard, gassed out and got outclassed in his very next fight. It's clear he punches the hardest out of anyone in the film series, but he also has shameful stamina and no plan B if he can't knock his guy out.

are u guys fools? did u see rocky in rocky IV? he was absolutley AT HIS PEAK then...he trained harder than ever before.....we have NEVER EVER seen balboa in such great chizzled shape....pain didnt bother him....drago hit 2150 PSI, MUCH MUCH heavier punch than clubber lang or anyone else. rocky was simply so FUCKIN DETERMINED nothing could stop him.

drago killed appolo creed who could still move, the same result would have happened prime for prime.....

1. rocky
2. drago- he would be # 1 if not for the freakish balboa Kayo
3a. Lang
3b. Creed

"you thought I was tough? this chump will kill you!"- Creed on Lang

Drago is over rated on this forum.

His reputation is based on being competitive with a washed up Balboa who was a shell after his two wars with Lang. The fact that Balboa retired after this fight says all we need to know about his condition.

If Drago fights Lang in Russia he wins via mid round KO. If they fight in the US it a no contest as Drago fails the drug test.
