It was funny to watch Joe Calzaghe doing his showboating
He couldnt help it
His ego and pride are too huge
He was finally in the ring with living legend Roy Jones and he wanted to show what he could do
The first two rounds showed what a nearer prime Roy Jones would do with Calzaghe though
He knocked him down
And in the second round he pot shot him perfectly
If he had been younger he would have kept that up for 12 rounds
And Calzaghe would have been tagged by alot of heavy pot shots
Jones picks his shots beautifully and them first two rounds showed a glimpse

Calzaghe beat him fair and square.
His display was amazing and he deserved to win.
Why are you so bitter?

Why are you so bitter? He's not disputing that Calzaghe won the fight. I think he's just surprised how well Jones did in the first couple of rounds.

CALZAGHE ONLY LIVES 60 MILES FROM ME
HE HAS DONE WALES PROUD WITH HIS ACHIEVEMENTS
AND BEAT BIG NAMES IN AMERICA
AT HIS PEAK THOUGH ROY JONES WAS THEE BEST

Jones would probably have won in his prime, but I don't like it when people use the excuse that Joe didn't look great in the first couple of rounds as hard evidence that thats the way the fight would have gone in the past - Joe has always been the kind of fighter to adapt during the course of a fight, whether it takes half a round against Lacy or 5 or 6 against Kessler of Hopkin, the later part of the fight rarely goes the same way as the earlier part. For all his flaws Joe is pretty good at adapting.

It werent so much about Joe in the opening couple of rounds
Regardless of who Roy Jones was fighting - them first couple of rounds you saw what Roy use to be able to do for a full fight

How well DID he do, mike?Scored a knockdown and landed some nice clean shots that's all. I'm not trying to turn it into a win for Jones but not many people thought a 40 year old Jones would do that in the first couple of rounds.

I expected he'd do better...to be honest, mike...I think he should have done better...

I expected him to be what he said he was: in better shape than in his previous fights since his come-down from HW. I expected he have worked himself back into some form. He still had power and speed, but little beside in terms of tactics, ring intelligence and craft, etc.
I expected he would do what he said he'd do: come to win and give it his all. He did neither, and even shot to bits he could have done that.
He said Calzaghe would have to kill him to beat him. Laughable! He didn't fight like a Champion, shot or otherwise, mike...

I like Joe Calzaghe less and less as time goes on. What he does in the ring is often very impressive, but last night I thought with all the showboating he crossed the line into disrespect for an outmatched and shot version of a formerly great fighter.
Someone needs to teach him a lesson - I sincerely hope he doesn't retire undefeated.
Well, you'd have a case for saying he tried to humiliate Jones. He did! But he also gave Jones the best possible chance to show what he was made of. Jones didn't take it. He humiliated himself in not taking it too, I'd say.

I'm sure he was saying the same things before the third Tarver fight. But you're right, if he said he was willing to die in the ring he could have at least gone for broke once he realised he needed a knockout.

A 39 year old Jones knocked down a 36 year old Calzaghe with a forearm...and?
Roy wasnt prime but neither was Joe.

He should have gone for broke after he had Calzaghe down, and certainly once he realised that his counterpunching wasn't doing much to Calzaghe anymore (certainly by round 6 or so, if not earlier)...
Even if he was only an eight round fighter by this stage, he should have given it his all for those 8 rounds and gone out on his shield, rather than like a humiliated non-hero.

So...in response to the thread...wasn't Jones also an egomaniac taking this fight and then fighting the way he did?

There was a point in the first half of the fight when they were both stood in front of each other dancing. The commentators seemed to love it but it was making a mockery a fight which had a lot of critics to begin with. If I want that sort of thing I'll watch the celebrity dancing programme.

yeah both ego maniacs
but Roy is the same in every fight
but the big stage brings the plonker out of Calzaghe
i dont think he was trying to humilate Jones - he wanted to show he could do that in a ring with a legend - it was all about his own ego - nothing against Jones

Not just the big stage...Calzahe has showboated in almost every fight...including against Bika, who was hardly a great fighter or a big stage fighter...it's just the way he is. Still, he did showboat more against Jones, as you say, because he wanted to do that against the legendary showboater...

The Sakio Bika fight is a prime example of bringing the plonker out of Calzaghe
there was a reason why he was acting up so childish there
no it was not a big stage or a big fight
but
it was the fight after the Jeff Lacy fight and that win had given him recognition in Amercia
so much so that HBO were screening that fight live to America
and Calzaghe ego knew this
thats why he was acting such a fool
he was trying to impress the American audience................showing off
obviously though he was just making a cock of himself in that fight
if that had been a normal defence with no HBO coverage Calzaghe would have been much more business like
but his ego and pride are such - he does silly things to make himself look good -

Joseph turned pro whilst Jones Jr had nearly had 20 odd fights and was already the IBF world champion. Dont try and tell me that Calzaghe & Jones have comparabled miles ! lol

Jones could have gone for broke in the first, he had so many opportunitites to let his hands go but he didn't. It was very tense watching, after drinking coffee all day in a vain attempt to keep my eyes open, I clawed at my face the whole time! To say I was jittery is an understatement.
Dropping his hands may be Joes style but he knows damn well what it looks like, to his opponant, his corner & his fans. I was scared that hee was overestimating his reaction time, he may have been, but Jones never went for him to really test it.
Having said that, Jones' eye was pissing blood and he still made it to the final bell. I enjoyed that fight immensely.

Yeah...about the eye...someone said they didn't put anything on it at first because they were hoping he'd get stopped on a cut so that he wouldn't have to be humiliated any more. In retrospect, I can almost buy that...

I will be watching the re-run of the this fight at 5pm.
The fact is alot of people are getting emotional over this fight. The odds on pick was always Calzaghe on points, and that is exactly what happened. Everyone knew Jones was far gone before this fight.
After the result, Jones should now retire. Calzaghe has one fight left, but he should also retire.
