Stribling should not be on there

Boxrec has him winning 257 fights and losing only 15.

He holds wins over Maxie Rosenbloom, Battling Levinsky, Jimmy Delaney, Tommy Loughran, Mike McTigue, some of them more than once.

You don't like his connections? You think these wins weren't on the up and up?

Stribling's wins over great fighters are ,2 over Rosenbloom, very creditable,2over Loughran.one in which he thumbed Loughran, and a loss to Loughran. One win over Levinsky ,who was 35 and on the slide, and two wins over Slattery, again very creditable though he was 10lbs heavier than Slattery in one fight. One win over a 32 year old Mctigue ,and one fixed fight that had the decision reversed.Stribling imo ,was very good but not great.

I would put Holman at 3 his resume is probably the second best after Langford on the list. Also Joe Jeanette instead of Young Stribling and Joe Choynski instead of Peter Jackson. Does anyone have any info on the NC between Corbett and Jackson who was doing better at the time it was called off.

Corbett. It was said to be a back and forth tussle. Jackson had his moments, but was almost out during the 28th round. I have it on DVD if you want a copy. I wish :good

For myself ,I have more sympathy for those poor guys who never got a chance at a title shot, several of those mentioned had at least one chance.

Howard Davis had skills, but no power.... His chin was chinny, also.... Other than that, Davis could box, and he was fast as all hell... Too bad he choked as a pro....:rofl

MR.BILL

Runner up: Razor Ruddock.... Ruddock had bad management, etc.... Had Razor been handled more professionally, he'd been a champion--for a little while....

Deserves a mention just for his amateur career.

But choked it as a pro.

Nielson was fat his entire career as well, so we can meet half way and say he was a decent fighter.

IDoes anyone have any info on the NC between Corbett and Jackson who was doing better at the time it was called off.

It was very tight, Corbett was supposedly the fresher of the two at the time it was called to a halt. Certainly Corbett's people were keener that it should be continued than Jackson's were, although both were done in.

Jackson injured his ankle quite badly in the run up to this one and although most say he was alright on the night, his training was supposed to have been badly disrputed.

Definitely, and all those guys are above him on the list aside from Booker. Booker probably was more talented than Stribling, but he doesn't have anything like the resume. He was less active (often because of injuries and difficulties finding matches) and tended to get beaten by the best guys he faced. Booker would still be in my 15, I think though.

You don't like his connections? You think these wins weren't on the up and up?

His record is padded, he was protected, he had multiple chances to fight for a title from middleweight to heavyweight but his father kept him out of those fights because he KNEW Strib would lose them (and he did anyway when he finally got his shot). His wins over Rosenbloom were good but his fight with Levinsky was TEN YEARS and a couple of retirements past Levinskys prime. Let me say that again TEN YEARS. His first two fights with Loughran were disputed, particularly the one on the undercard of Greb-Moore. That was called a robbery. Loughran avenged the defeat though. Not sure what you think is so special about Jimmy Delaney. He was a decent contender but not a great fighter by any stretch. McTigue was a bum and a cheese champ who shouldnt have gotten a title shot and shouldnt have won the fight that got him the title. He clearly lost to Siki (I have the film, complete), he clearly didnt deserve it, in fact he was panned by the press here in the US when he got it as hed been a joke before hand. If you go through and look at all the newspaper decisions he lost for simply doing nothing but trying to NOT get KOd you realize how piss poor a champ he was. Its notable that after winning the title he lost decisions or ND to every worthy guy he faced: Walker, Loughran twice, Stribling at least once possibly twice depending on who you listen to, Mickey Walker (yes the LHW champ lost to the welterweight champ) and then lost the title outright to Berlenbach. I just cant prescribe to the McTigue argument. The bottom line is, like I said before, he got more than one shot at more than title and couldnt bring it home. He had several more opportunities for title shots (he was immensely popular) but his parents (who managed him) knew his limitations and turned them down. I wouldnt include him anywhere near the top ten greatest fighters to never win a title.
