It was a close fight...I had Winky narrowing it out, but yeah, Vargas beat him.

Close fight, maybe this is the one I was mixing the Quartey fight with Vargas up. Anyways I believe Winky edged this one out. Close fight, I don't think Winky had faced the level of competition and had the world-class experience he has today. I think the Winky of today beats him no question.
Winky obviously didn't have as much experience then as he does today, but he had still faced more world class fighters at the time than Vargas had.

If you're only 17, it's probably hard to believe.. but at one time Vargas was actually an excellent fighter. People say Winky might've had an edge over Vargas, but it's highly debatable. A good arguement can be made for Vargas as well as Winky regarding who won this fight. Some will say " Winky got robbed " but that's utter rubbish, as the fight was very close.

Winky should've got the nod. Vargas was the hype job at the time. Good fight, they both worked hard, but Winky was the better boxer.

Good fight the first time round I thought Vargas got the nod the last round sealed it for Vargas IMO, then again the second time around I could see Winky winning it as well.
Tuff fight to score really.
you have to realise that a prime vargas was actually really, really good. there was a reason he was a p4p fighter in 1999, there was a reason that trinidad and him fought an epic battle....
Vargas in his prime could do it all really..... his jab wasnt that great but besides that, he could box when needed, he could box going forward, box going backwards, he could work around your defence or go threw your defence, he mixed up boxing and power punching beautifully, could set up traps and also had that great fire in him... his spirit, which helped him rally in fights and to always get the last edge in rounds. He could set up his powerful right hand (which though he was known for his left hook i always thought this was his best punch) with his jab, he used it great as a lead weapon, he could effectively left hook up top or down below and had a lethal body attack when applied. he had NO chin issues at this point (pre tito) and NO stamina problems, no back problems, no weight issues... trust me when i say todays feroz is a GHOST of what he was.... he put on a fast, high pace, and threw in combinations, and threw punches at all angles, uppercuts, hooks, right hands, ect.
he used all this in combination to pull out a close victory against wright.... its a very underated fight by the mainstream and if you can get it its worth the watch.

It was close, but if Winky had been the up and comer that Vargas was a the time...he would have won. I think he had to overcome the idea that he wasn't supposed to win the fight...so if it takes the judges a few rounds to start giving a guy his props and then Vargas wins the last few rounds, these things can happen.

I thought Winky won it but they gave it to Vargas because he was suppose to be the next big thing in boxing.

I dont think that is why they gave it to Vargas you can make a case for either guy, anybody who scored that fight objectively could tell you that.

I thought it was a close fight no robbery by any means. I scored it 7-5 Winky but I think the judges were influenced by the hype that Vargas was getting at the time. In other words it was better for boxing if Vargas won than if Wright did.

I agree. People act like the Vargas in his 2nd fight with Mosley is an accurate depiction of what he always was.
That 2nd Mosley fight was his only one sided loss and he only lost to legit all time greats.
I thought he beat Wright based on how strongly he closed the show. Roger Bloodworth should have gotten trainer of the decade for squeezing that kind of effort out of a distracted, unmotivated Vargas.
Had Vargas taken Winky seriously at that point in time, I feel it would have been a one sided Vargas win.

What ever happened to Vargas, didn't he win a belt at 21 or something like that. It seems that his career ended before it began, plus didn't he have back problems; something with his spine? was that the cause of his quick downfall?

He won 14 consecutive fights since turning PRO in 1997. In his 15th fight at the age of 21 he won the IBF Light Middle Weight Title. He won a string of another five fights which includes victory over Winky and Ike Quartey.
On his 20th fight on Dec 2, 2000, he fought a unification fight with the WBA LMW Champ Trinidad and lost his first fight. He won another 2 K.O. victories after that and challenge De La Hoya for the WBC and WBA LMW titles in 2002 and lost again. In 2006 he lost twice to Mosley.
Spine problem? ON that I'm not sure and familliar.

it was much like the taylor fight.winky fought him close and it was toe to toe.but i thought it was clear that winky won.i mean the fight was close but it still was easy to see who got or should have got the victory.
winky was robbed in the vargas and taylor fights, he beat them at the own game, never running up in the face and he was given the bad end of the deals both times.

It's in reverse my friend. Winky has never been touted as being overrated. Even most hardcore boxing fans didn't give Winky his full recognition until his consecutive victories against Mosley. The casual boxing fan got on board Winky's bandwagon after he defeated Tito. So how is Winky overrated?

Legal problems
Personal problems
Drinking problem (effects his weight and overall ability to this day)
Too much in the ring damage (give me a fighter to fight winky, ike, ross, and tito in one year and i garuntee you they wont be the same after that one year, think of that... in ONE YEAR he did all that, now think of the damage, and the sparring, ect, ect... never was the same after 2000)
bulged L5 disk which effects how he fights, how he trains, ect
When exactly was fernando vargas in him prime? In his close fight with Wright? MOST people thought Wright won that fight. MOST people? lol... ya... right. its more like split.
and if you cant tell when exactly nando was in his prime...
from 1998 till 2000 and the trinidad fight... then i dont know man. its pretty easy to tell. his prime was campas, clarke or whatever his name was, winky, ike, thompson, and trinidad...
its a shame his best came too early, cuz at 21 years old he would have only gotten better if he didnt allow himself to get in the way, and who knows what would have happened.
it was much like the taylor fight.winky fought him close and it was toe to toe.but i thought it was clear that winky won.i mean the fight was close but it still was easy to see who got or should have got the victory.
winky was robbed in the vargas and taylor fights, he beat them at the own game, never running up in the face and he was given the bad end of the deals both times. how can you say he was robbed, when so far its split 50/50 on even ESB on who won?
a robbery is when its OBVIOUS that someone should have gotten a victory. sorry bro... but when something is cut so close, and so many people are split on who won, there is no right in saying it was a robbery no matter how you scored it.

Most of the people who say that Winky won the fight against Vargas have not seen the fight. It was a very close fight with Vargas pulling out the win in the Championship rounds. I thought that Vargas won a close but clear decision.

Vargas was a MUUUUUUUUUUUCH different fighter back then..........but he didn't beat Wright, he got a gift decision on the cards.
But if you actually saw Vargas fight back then it wouldn't surprise you at all that he could've beaten Wright. He was a monster.

Im not so sure.
Vargas was very competative against Tito, then DLH (can scarp that one due to roids though). . . but he was very competative with Shane in first match. The second fight was a big drop off.

In a way, also like Meldrick Taylor.
Both Vargas and Taylor lost unification fights to more experienced champs in fights in which they could have been more conservative (I think Tito would've won regardless though) instead of brawl-happy.
They both won titles later on, but weren't quite the same.
While I don't think Chavez and Trinidad ALONE ruined them, they were the main fights that did the most damage. Both of them in general took a lot of shots so I wonder about the longevity they would've had anyway.
