Oh man, I saw snippets of this one once.

I have NEVER seen more of a height difference in a fight. What was White, seven something feet tall?

No shit.

I've seen clips of it, including the knockdowns and stoppage, that straight left ate the giant up. Very nice execution from Moorer.

I may have a copy on VHS somewhere, but I'd be luck if it still plays if it's found.

I saw the fight live, on HBO. I think Lennox Lewis defeated a fighter named Levi Billups on the same card. Seem like I remember Lewis using a downward elbow strike, maybe a few, on Billups during a clinch.

White ended Moorer's ko streak, when he was the first man to take him the distance. Moorer did drop him late, maybe the final round.

Yes... I have a copy.... It stunk...... It went the distance, but Moorer scored a late-round knockdown..... Mike White was a gutless stiff for a guy 6' 10" tall...... Lenny Lewis won a lackluster decision over Levi Billups in the co-event..... This was back in 1991 or 1992.... It was aired by HBO......

There's footage from this fight in a Moorer highlight video on Youtube.

Just search Micheal Moorer, you'll find it. Not tons of his stuff on there.

I just looked the fight up on boxrec, and there it says White was saved by the bell. The ref may have been moving in to call time in the footage you saw, it's been a while I've seen it.

i was at the fight, i know some strange facts about the fight.. i know that if the fight was not so cut and dried Mike was going to be awarded the decision and hand Mo his first loss.. Moorer however did far too much and the fix was called off because White was battered and dropped heavily in round 1 and almost Ko'd in the last few seconds.. But trust me (Mike was alledgedly going to be awarded a win) if it were to have been a close fight. I was told this many months later by an official (no names) but he was a BIG name in the Nevada Commission.. I hate to say it but it was the only time i saw a fight fix almost carried out before my very eyes.. The fight was too one sided in the end (Mike had beaten Buster Douglas ) years prior and he was backed by major foreign investors at the particular time.. I was shocked too , thankfully it never came off... but it was supposed to have.. Levi Billups also became the first man to stretch Lewis as a pro.. Lennox was dirty in that event, he elbowed Levi (former san diego footballer) on the top of his head intentionally after the end of round 1..

Wait, White was 26-10 at the time of the Moorer fight.

Who in gods name would be backing him to win? What would the point be?

I never understood myself why anyone would want the fight psuedo fixed, but i understand some cash was placed on the underdog up in Reno, and the people who did place the money were bigtime players.. I stated before that this is the one and only time i ever came across a fix that almost genuinely took place.. The other one i saw that always hurt me was when the IBF had Axel robbed of the chance of a decision against Foreman at the MGM... If White could have made the fight look awkward and got into it of sorts he would have walked away with a upset victory on points... Moorers knockdowns and shutout made it too clearcut.. The people concerned abandonned this due to such a badly damaged reputation... One man that told me part of this stuff had no part in it , that man was Luthur Mack.. shhhh....

I saw that fight on TV at the time. Moorer scored a vicious knockdown in the first, but then went off the boil before coming back and dropping White at the end of the last round.

White was big, but not very good. Pierre Coetzer also fought him. Julius Long looks like a modern version of White, only he's fatter.

Like I say, I've got the fight on DVD and Moorer drops White something like 3 times I think...and the only thing that stopped it being a KO10 victory for him was the ruling that you can only be saved at the bell in the last round.

Moorer drops White hard right at the end and White topples, tries to get up and falls over again. No way he was going to beat the 10 count, but the bell had already saved him. Cornermen rush in, crowd around him and help him to his feet but he still looked out of it.

I do remember Foreman being extremely pro-White on the commentary. Suggesting things he can do to improve, praising his moments and potential and so on. It gets to the point where Lampley says "No, Mike White can't be champion of the world, George. NO THING, okay? It's beautiful for you to say it, okay, we love your heart, but it's just not true."

Got the punchstats too...Moorer 263/394 (67%!), White 158/497 (32%). White was busier but all the heavy stuff was from Moorer, and a lot more of it too.

Not to take this thread off-course or anything but I'm curious to hear some of the more balanced peoples opinions on this subject:

Where does Michael Moorer stand with you historically? Was he a good fighter? Great fighter? Or is he fluffed up to try and make Foreman's already staunch resume look better?

Just curious to hear where some stand on this.

Mike was the dominant one of the bunch i thought at light heavy and could have cleaned up that division if he'd have wanted to.. Moorers trouble at heavyweight was , although he was a devistating puncher he had a few flaws with punch resistance, he was knocked down by Everett Martin, Bert Cooper, Holyfield in the 1st fight that he won, Foreman KO'd by.. Holyfield in second fight he lost by stoppage, Tua.. Moorer was a very hard puncher and a solid boxer with a fast snappy jab, if he would have beaten George he would have been in against the WBC champ Tyson in a unification fight... But History put paid to that.. He was a Good heavyweight , a good solid champion and a deserved one too, but never a great one. At Light heavy he could have gone on to have a wonderful legacy, but he wanted the cash they brought to the table at heavyweight..

Moorer got $6.5m for the fight, Foreman got $1m.

I've never seen Moorer vs Everett Martin, was it a flash knockdown or heavier? Heard it was a bit flashy, though that could be propaganda ;)

Damon, Thanks for the purse numbers, i didn't know exactly.......

The Martin Knockdown was Mikes first ever as a pro fighter, Moorer was on the offensive and stepping forward behind the jab, then Everett threw a short straight punch which caught Michael square on and he just slumped onto the seat of his pants, wasn't really hurt but it was a legit knockdown.. Mike was just not concentrating and left himself wide open.. The fight was at the palace at Aubern Hills Michighan... I always remember it , Both men wore very dark green gloves.....

mike moorer is a guy who if he had someone like shilstone in his corner he would have been the best 175 / cruiser weight fighter of all time ..

Thanks for the information in return, Bigcat.

The big money was always at heavyweight...there have been so many cruisers that put on a few extra pounds to try it against the bigger opponents. Even if they only get losses it can still be more lucrative.
