Cross Country or Road Work ?

What do you prefer and what do you actually end up doing more / less ?

Does cross country / hill running build muscle more ? Than Lose it ?

Only ever done concrete......is there big differences ?

Thanks

I prefer cross country, but there aren't many locations over here, plus there are no hills. There's a big difference between concrete and for example a beach with loose sand, or a forest trail. Foot placement becomes more important on a trail, for obvious reasons. In loose sand the muscles in the lower leg are stressed much harder, when I first did it my toes and mid foot muscles cramped up all the time, and my calves and ankles also took a beating. But they get used to it, and it's definitely beneficial. It's a much more natural environment to run in. In the forest there are things to jump off, rocks to climb, fallen trees to balance on, etc. Let me loose in a forest with hills and I'm a child again, it's so much fun and a much better workout than your average asphalt run.

Yup, agreed, the mind is constantly thinking even regarding as you said foot placement.( roads = bad bones etc )

Does it burn fat the same way or does "offroad" so to speak, build muscle more etc ?

Yeah , everyones metabolism is different etc.....how do you find it ?

Cheers

I wouldn't say it builds muscle, perhaps some in the foot and lower legs. If you add in some sprints and some climbing perhaps. Don't expect bodybuilder like muscle growth though. I guess it also depends on how much muscle you have now, you could also end up losing some.

For fat loss hill runs and off road runs are definitely better because they end up being a HIIT session.

forest runs are by far the best, im a big kid aswell in the forest, jumping off tree, ducking branches imagening enemies attacking me sprinting up hilss and its just aloot nicer than city running, no cars , no dickheads to get in your way, althoug they could be intergrated as part of a jog/spar session ^^

I run in the woods mostly. There are tons of trail around my house. I get a much better workout too because I don't get bored and I usually pick trails with a lot of elevation gain. And it's much easier on my knees and feet.

I live in the mountains so I have to run up hill at some point. I don't think it builds more muscle but it improves your endurance. (If you want to build up your leg muscles, try doing some squats and hill-sprints).

I normally run cross-country and combine it with some road work. I guess it must depend on your location. (I prefer road work when it's raining / snowing and cross country running when it's dry).

If you want to loose fat, try wearing a sauna suit / sweat suit on your run. There are some effective fat burning supplements available that help the process along, but the trick is to burn more calories than you eat!

If it's dark then I normally stick to roadwork (with high visibility jackest for safety!) Although it's possible to buy lightweight 'head torches' - which I find work well.

How will dehydrating help him lose fat?

I see your point but I felt that sauna suits do have their benefits -
Numerous people use sauna suits to reduce weight, which occurs through a shedding of excess water. Sauna suits also aid people looking to detoxify their body, as impurities, chemicals, unwanted toxins, and other types of waste are also released through the amount of liquid extracted while wearing the suit.

I'm not saying it's the only way to burn fat, but with a combination of a balanced diet (burning more carbs than you eat), taking fat burning supplements and running when wearing sauna suit is the way to go. I found it to be beneficial anyway.

**There are some dangers when sauna suits are abused and worn too
long - dehydration being one of them.

Sauna suits will not aid in burning fat, which is what he's after. Water weight loss is meaningless, as soon as you drink it's back again. Dehydrating is all a sauna suit does, and the OP is not making weight he wants to shed his fat belly.

Heys, regarding the sauna suit situation etc, i always wear 2 t shirts, plastic hooded jacker(hood up) microfibre running jacket, lycra running trousers and cotton trackies on top......

I dont do it for the cutting weight purpose but i do like the way i am boiling and sweating after say a mile cause of all the layers.

I do think its good for me regarding impurities etc.

Its an uphill road run of 3-4 miles

I think i am realising i cant eat all i want and burn it as easy

Anyways, do ppl think that morning and night running hold much difference ? Morning makes your metabolism kick in quicker and resorts to your sugar fat storage = loss of stomach fats, true ?

Thanks again

Morning or night doesn't really matter just run, don't over think things. It doesn't have to be running either, whatever gets your heart rate up will do. Be careful with the sweating, if you can't get rid of excess heat your performance will suffer.

Don't even get me started on the detoxing bullshit. Detoxing is done by your liver and kidneys, even when you're not breaking a sweat.

Aye cheers, its easy to think about thinking etc

Now you mention detox etc what forms of detox have you used if you have ? I see many "packet" ones and also the ones on forums, that end up with a cup of oil and lemon then sit and wait etc....

Seriously, im wanting to do one but am confused with the options.

Peoples opinions appreciated.again

i much prefer running/sprinting in the woods compared to roads....nocer place to be, better air, nicer smells etc.....i integrate some log lifting/gate vaulting/sprinitng into my 45 minute gentle run every day....it goes much quicker than roadwork as your always looking where to place yer feet etc....then i finish with 5-8 sets of uphill sprints with vaults at the top......

"it goes much quicker than roadwork as your always looking where to place yer feet"

Exactly, i never run off road etc, im a bit anal with times etc and aye the footwork.

Maybe i need to dedicate a time to the run ( run for 30 or 40 ) rather than, how quick i can do a run ( my regular run )

Offroad gives you a lot more thinking on your feet ( surprises etc )

Can only be better :good I was just worried about weight gain from it........and those branches ! ! !

Will let you know when i start doing the sprints etc, cheers :good

I thought about this before, I realise that the sauna suits will only shed the water and you'll put it straight back on but surely you'll be working a lot harder so you will therefore burn more calories or do you think you won't work as hard because you're dehydrated?

Question i sometimes ask myself "is it better to have a ton of layers on, or watch the old man sprint past me in his vest and snug shorts "

Good question, isnt there a positive to wearing more layers, plastics, long term, rather than "making weight" ??

Cheers

yes it makes you sweat more then the sweat stays in your clothes because it cnt get out through all the layers and it adds weight to you while you run

Dehydration will take its toll, but what's worse the body becomes incapable of getting rid of excess heat and is forced to decrease performance. It's not worth the discomfort. I'd rather be well hydrated and comfortably clothed.

None, they're bullshit. If you eat healthy your liver and kidney will take care of the detoxing for you, no effort required.

The same water weight that used to be inside you now hangs in your clothes, meaning the total weight remains exactly equal.

Aint the end of that workout a positive then ? If you can maintain, foods intakes etc? Your weight loss is not only gone but it is shifting as u act to a deficiency, example, every last mile, you may add 2 slight pounds to your weight ?

Good replys btw, i understand what you mean about heat release etc.........maybe i need a happy medium?
Tbh, i did the same when sparring for fights etc.....wore layers etc............
1 they absorb instead of running all over me
2 i see it as a similar idea to wearing 16-20 oz gloves regarding sparring and speed.
3 running in workboots as opposed to running shoes/trainers etc ( no i never did this )

Thoughts
