I rank him just below Carlos Zarate.

Top 50, easily.

I can't rank him below Zarate, given the beating he gave him and his better overall body of work. I also can't rank him top 50, despite his wealth of talent/skill. He just didn't accomplish enough in my estimation.

I think he had top 20 talent. He was a wrecking machine at 122. Best ever at that weight IMO. He probably squeeks in to my top 50 if I did a list.

He sure did.

1.Lupe Pintor (TKO)
2.Carlos Zarate (TKO)

those were his 2 BEST wins in his career.

I just did a search on gomez's record on boxrec, he beat 15 mexicans in his 50 fights he had, but only 2 of them were worthy (pintor, zarate), this clearly has nothing to do with your post, but IMO he was the mexicutioner, :yep.

Yeah, I think the trouble is that those guys came up from 118. He didn't have a great opponent at 122. The Pintor fight was an all time classic and he brutalized Zarate. Unfortunately he had to go up to 126 for a great opponent. Pick your poison, Sanchez or Pedroza. I still think if he'd have come out more cautious against Sanchez that could have been a more competitive fight. Anyway, at his weight he was one of the most dominant fighters I've ever seen.

He may just crack the top 50, but only just. I think he's set within the top 60 though.

At his best he was one of the most immensely talented figthers I've ever seen.

I absolutely took tremendous pleasure in seeing Salvador Sanchez destroy him. He was the Mexicutioner indeed, but Gomez paid dearly for his remarks about Salvador and it will always make me smile. (I'm Half-Mexican, so there you go)

Over two bantams out of their comfort zone. We all saw what usually happened when Gomez stepped out his comfort zone. :good

Top 50 maybe, he did choke a bit against Sanchez, in a fight many thought he was capable of if not winning, then putting up a much better performance than he did.

I don't think he necessarily 'choked', he was just outclassed and badly beaten up.

Camacho, Rosario, and Gomez all paid tremendous price when they talked trash their mexican opponents, :yep.

I'm with you on that one. Sanchez rearranged his face in the first round and gained ultimate revenge. Sanchez didnt look like a fighter but he had some real balls didnt he?

Gomez vs Sanchez 2 was suppose to happen, but Sanchez died.

Gomez attended his funeral I believe.

............Gomez was a big favorite of mine when I first got into boxing. I appreciated the mindest as much as anything I guess; say what you will about his failures at featherweight and relative lack of opposition at 122, this one was prepared to go out on his shield every time.

You couldn't ask for more will and determination, and the skills and power were there in abundance. I didn't like that he fought dirty a lot of the time, but he wasn't habitual about it.

I'd put Barrera ahead of him and probably Morales, Pacquaio and Hamed. Prime for prime they all beat him. A beast at the 122lb weight but lacking in refinement. He did face the best ever in Sanchez and there was a gulf between them.

If he was around when there was no 122 weight class he wouldn't have been much more than a contender

He also had Davila which was an awesome win.

I tend to dismiss someone saying 'he's worthy of top 20' as soon as they say 'I did a search on his boxing record':patsch

I think the Davila win is better than the Pintor win due to the ease in which he beat Davila. He basically made beating Davila look easy, at the end I thought even Juan Noriega had a chance to beat Davila

Well, post-sanchez, Bazooka seemed to drop some of his nuacnes and patience he displayed in the fights with Zarate and Davila.

Davila is a punch-perfect dissection IMO. When Gomez wants to end it, he ends it, in efficient fashion.
