I have a great one: "run frequently". If you want to improve on your running, that is. It's not the same as ring stamina, but you'll find that out afterwards.

Doesn't your gym do conditioning drills on the bag? I mean c'mon how do you condition yourself for throwing punches, by running perhaps?

RDJ: Can you go 3 rounds?

Hyptoad: i gotz mad stamina wrestling but suck at throwing pnchs. I gotz to run more i guess

RDJ:?!:patsch "Awww for fuck's sake....."

When are people going to learn the difference between anaerobic andd aerobic????!!!!

Running=aerobic

throwing punches with "mad" stamina=anaerobic

:think Not rocket science. Running is used more for weight cutting in my program. Fartlek as opposed to long slow distance running.

If your determined to run do intervals. e.g. run hard for however long your round is then light jog for a minute etc. Best thing you can do is lots of sparring and bag work for your stamina.

Tabata protocol. 20 seconds of hard activity, 10 seconds rest. Repeat at least eight times.

Amen :D

Running (or rather roadwork) has its use to increase the aerobic base, aerobic glycogen burning does take place while boxing, especially in later rounds or if you're a "runner" (malignaggie style). Running on a forest trail with an uneven surface can also be considered an agility workout.

I like running, but I don't expect much improvement in ring stamina from it. I use the improved cardiovascular endurance to improve my ring stamina with, but it still takes a sports specific workout to harvest its potential.

Even the military is slowly doing away with long slow distance running.

Fartlek, hill sprints and other mixture of anaerobic/areobic runs would be considered combat running.

The sticky threads should read as the chapters in a book, we should ideally cover all aspects of training. One on proper road work geared towards fighting would definitely be a good idea.

- Principles of training (specificity, overload, recovery, adaptation and reversibility, the different energy systems, etc)
- Nutrition (explained, and perhaps sample diets / diet rules).
- Roadwork / combat running / fartlek / hill sprints / etc.
- Conditioning drills.
- Boxing specific things, useful instructional video's from youtube for example.

It would be a great idea... learn what we don't know and add what we do know.

if you want to improve your stamina through sprints heres afew

try sprinting for about 20 secs and a 10 secs rest that seems to me to replicate my actions in a ring over 2 mins

it realy gets your stamina up

also sprint round a football pitch (soccer for you yanks) then take a mins break that seems like a round for me in terms of energy sapping

but listen to RDJ he speaks sense

the best thing to do is heaps of rounds on bags pads and sparring

Try running 400m 1 minute rest X how ever many rounds you want to train for.... you should sprint the full 400m.

Alternate with 800m .... 1 minute rest x rounds.... running speed approx 75% plus first lap and all out second lap.

Pads and sparring develop extra fitness, but on the pads you can pick up bad habits and give off rest signals when your fucked.. Same on the bag, you need someone watching to make sure your delivery and form are correct. For me sparring is the main fitness thing especially if your sparring with someone you can trust and go to work with.

My favourites:

On track:
400m sprint
Run 100
300m sprint
Run 200
200m sprint
Run 300
100m sprint
Run 400

Then do this again in the opposite direction. I do sets of 3-4 of this, and go full out on the sprints.

Another one I like is:
Sprint as far as you can for two minutes, jog for one minute. I do this five times if I'm boxing four rounds, and four times if I'm boxing three rounds.

When they start doing 3x3 minute matches, I'll do 4x3 minutes.

I used to run suicides on the outdoor basketball court early in the morning and run/sprint the hills. That along with gym-work is more than enough conditioning. Just pick a time (IE: 20 minutes) or an amount of suicides, and increase each time you go out there.
