View Full Version : Who are your 5 favourite fighters, all time?

McGrain
08-09-2007, 05:23 AM
This is not just about boxing skills (my own list would look pretty different then) and watching them fight on tape or live, but a list composed of everything in the fighters history, life story, character, charisma, whatever. Of course, it's your list and if you want to weigh it 90 or a 100% in favour of the boxing that's fine, but let's see your list.

No honourable mentions, no top tens...lets see your five favourite fighters all time, say why if you like.

1. Mike Tyson: I like to ignore the terrible things he did or may have done. The ear-biting, arm-twisting, felonies, etc...He was unique. His interviews aren't filled with boring cliches. He says either whatever is on his mind at the moment or whatever he feels like saying, maybe to trick people with that sociopathic personality of his. OK, that's not always a good thing, but I enjoy his interviews a lot. He was a hard puncher with speed who threw great combos and beautiful punches. He had a charisma about him, and I love the black shorts, black shoes, no socks thing. Most importantly, he has a whole list of high reel stoppages:

Berbick, Frazier, Botha, Bruno I and II, Spinks, Holmes, Thomas, Boyd, Johnson, Biggs, Ratliff, etc...

Let me think about the other 4.

Archie Moore is a good pick.

I never watched his fight with Rocky but I heard about it (and the mafia).

Moore's clash with Marciano is probably my favourite of the '50s heavyweight championship fights.

Moore started off well, winning the first round narrowly and taking the second easily, knocking Marciano down briefly with one of the perfect counters you will ever see. As Marciano lunged forward, Moore timed his punch flawlessly; his fist made a bolo-like motion, but whipped round to form a straight right that was delivered while moving his upper body backwards. Marciano was dropped as the shot landed smack on his nose/jaw.

But from then on, Moore won perhaps only one more round, two at best. Marciano's grinding assault took its toll on a naturally smaller man and at times, he would throw steady but seemingly limitless combinations that had to be seen to be believed. Moore made an excellent job of defending himself and stung Marciano opportunistically, but there was only so much he could do to fight off a bulldozer. Marciano won through sheer attrition, dropping Moore four times then for a fifth and final time in the ninth. Moore's stand was gallant, but he was thoroughly beaten.

In no order:

Mike Tyson - Revitalised my interest in boxing.
Rocky Marciano - A great guy and great champion.
Marvin Hagler - The epitome of professionalism.
Tommy Hearns - A class act in and out of the ring.
Brian Mitchell - Proved that hard work can overcome physical limitations.

But I'm learning about fighters all the time, so ask me in 5 months and I could give you a different answer.

Lex

Muhammad Ali - Even after losing the first bout with Frazier, he was my inspiration to go into amateur boxing.

Roberto Duran - Because I couldn't box anything like Ali, so Duran influenced my style. (Meaning, hit as hard as possible, as many times as possible.)

Salvador Sanchez - Because he inherited a logical place in the progression from Alfonso Zamora to Carlos Zarate to Wilfredo Gomez, each of whom I really admired. And Sanchez mighta-coulda-woulda-shoulda been an all time Top 10 featherweight. Heck, he already is in my book.

Marvin Hagler - Grrrrr...

Gene Fullmer - The epitome of the figher with limited tools making the most of what he had. Hard hitting, hard headed, deceptively slick and a helluva good guy if a bit of a square head.

AP you only picked 4!

Chicago Nights
08-11-2007, 08:46 PM
1) Shane Mosley: Colorful, classy, and classic, Mosley fights with a mix of ferocity, professionalism, and determination that I have always found extremely entertaining. He's had more longevity that some might have imagined given his style and extremely high level of competition. Love the way he commits to the body, which spawned from thousands of hours sparring with the best Mexican and chicano fighters in California. He's got a great story too, tales abound of him sparring Azuma Nelson at the age of 15. Finally, there is somewhat of a personal connection. When I boxed, which seems like a thousand years ago, I got to meet Shane and his dad, and both men were 100 percent class acts.

2) Jack Dempsey: Talk about a guy who seemed to fight angry. No mercy, ever. JD thought to score a brutal knockout every second of every fight. He liked to beat people up. Took pride in it. The archetype for vicious heavyweights.

3) Marvin Hagler: I loved the chip on his shoulder. He used the injustices done to him to motivate him. Picture the exact opposite of Dave Tiberi if you're not sure what I'm alluding to. Hagler came in 100 percent top shape every single fight. As pure a fighter as there ever was. Could box, could slug, and could take a kick from a mule on the chin. When he walked away, he did so they way it SHOULD be done. No attention whoring, he moved on like a man, albeit bitter, and moved on the to the next phase of his life. Not suprsingly, he was a success there too.

4) Marco Antonio Barrera: I can't tell you many how many fun nights of boxing I enjoyed watching this guy. Except for Gatti, he produced more pure entertainment value than anyone on my list. Smooth, stylistic aggressor who was almost never in a boring match. Best of all, whenever people called his career over, he'd come back better than ever. All the more impressive considering this man had alot of options, and could have walked away comfortable in his accomplishments and future earnings possibilities.

5) Arturo Gatti: Heart and soul. Face turned into hamburger. A left hook that was a bigger harbinger of doom than Batman's utility belt. Patterson, Rodriguez, Ruelas, Manfredy, Robinson, Ward. Nuff said.

Good idea. 'Four' is the new 'Five' I heard. ;)

My Top 4:

1. Nigel Benn (Pure excitement. A great punch + loads of heart - a decent chin = Thrills-a-minute).

2. Muhammad Ali (Often spoilt by the deification that some fans pour upon him, but remains a great character, if somewhat flawed. Not a bad fighter either).

3. Carlos Monzon (Totally fascinating individual. Ice cool and aloof in the ring, mad as fuck out of it).

4. John Conteh (Bags of wasted talent, the ultimata playboy. First credited with the great line: "I blew all my money on sex, drugs and gambling. The rest I wasted).
