im just wondering

i have 2 fights coming up

firstly
scottish youth novice championship @ 54kg

secondly
northern district scotland youth 6-10 fight championship @54kg

the reason why im fighting novice then 6-10 is that i have had 5 fights and the scottish will probably put me to 7 fights

When I got there I heard he didn't want to fight me after all. He just wanted an exhibition. Then they checked my record book and just shook their heads. No exhibition either. :patsch Damn cowards.

Well, at least I got some TV-time and I got the newspaper folks to write in the paper that I badly needed sponsors. :huh

Boxing matchmaking was always was a mess for some reason. I just don't get it: coaches ask the record of the boxer upfront, from dealing with the other boxer's coach, so unless his coach lies about the boxer's record, then why bother going all the way to a venue, when you think the guy is too experienced. :patsch On the other hand, sometimes coaches do lie about their lad, and expect that if somebody has travelled a long time they'll take a fight anyway. I once had a match agreed at 91-kg, and I was 86kg. I weighed in, and then the opponent came and weighed in at 109kg. My coach didn't want me to give 23kg of weight so he pulled me out, and that guy's coach was furious.

I really miss boxing, but I definitly dont miss all that matchmaking stuff!

Yeah, you're absolutely right. It does ruin the sport of boxing.
I think the guy who fixed me the fight must've lied about my record. You can't trust anyone. But when he traveled all that way, we could at least had some sparring.

He had 33 fights aganist my 51. He weighed in at 72kgs and I was 76,5kgs (long time since I've been that low!). Edit: He also was the current Swedish junior Champ and had some RSC's.

National championship end of next month.

After that local show looking like April. Another fight in May, maybe even 2 then and who knows what else. Spose depends on what happens next month.

After going thru a spell of having fights fall apart on me (yes it sux bad!), I've been on a good run and they've been holding up...so, hoping that keeps up.

Noticed you typed in stuff as I was. I am surprised also they didn't have an exhibition atleast for you, and him. Is easy enough to set the ref. up for a quick stoppage if too lopsided. Maybe the fighter didn't want it?

Thanks, good luck to you also. :)

Not that many 7 (should be 9 now), after being stripped of 2 fights and basically being accused of padding my record by fighting two people older then me by 5+ years if that makes any sense at all (well Boxing Ontario wouldn't count them) with not much experience to get enough to get upgraded to Open Class...after winning provincial championship. Ended up having to redo one of them and travelling my ass off to get enough at the time for upgrade ( then five) to get to an Open championship and to be eligible for nationals. It was a bit of a mess. That make any sense? lol

I'm 14 years old btw.

Youngblood
01-25-2009, 04:31 PM
Well it barely makes sense when I reread it. Short of it is...they wouldn't count 2 fights due to age difference (boxing canada) for upgrade and they wanted my fights in Canada, both of those were in the USA. So 2 santioned fights on the card got turned into exhibitions.

I am Open Class now thru upgrade and have fought already as such and will be at nationals.

Ha well...I know it sounds retarded, and likely should have just said 7 and left it at that.

Not sure if you know how upgrades work, but you need to fill out a form and have a letter explaining why and have no losses, and send in a copy of your book, with fights they can check out before they will upgrade you to open prior to having 10 or 11 or w/e it is.

Basically, they sent it back and said 2 fights they weren't accepting in it even though they were the people who wanted me upgraded to open. So i had to go find one more fight to make it legit in their minds...and it had to be in our province where they govern (and win it).

When all is said and done...I think it may have been a mistake upgrading. As it now appears harder for me to find fights then if I was still novice, because of my fighting size (6'1 70-75kg) and age.

Damn! If you pay, then alright. :yep

I remember hearing a story. Maybe about 10-15 years ago Norway met Team USA up in Raufoss (about 2 hours drive from Oslo), very small town. All the Norwegians got beaten badly, except Anders Styve in 63,5kgs or 67kgs (not sure what weight at the time) who fought the last and final fight. The American thought he was going to get an easy fight like all the others, but he was wrong. Very wrong. :yep Styve kicked his ass real bad.

Styve was one of the best boxers in the world who never made it in the big championships, like the Worlds and Euros. In the Olympic Qualifier he lost with one or two points to Oleg Saitov in Moscow... In sparring he shut close Felix Sturm's eyes. He also overwhelmed and knocked down Mikkel Kessler on a training camp, and was sent home.

If only, my friend.:lol: How about you; are you training now?

I was training intensly before mid-December and felt good, but matches kept falling through. Haven't boxed since last March, and not by my own choice. Now life's realities have caught up in terms of work, and I don't have time to train enough to compete. At least for the moment. Going to the gym once or twice a week though just to spar.

And you have to admint, 6ft heavyweights are more fun to watch ;)

Not sure, within a few weeks. Fucking up this close to a fight was not what I had in mind. I only missed about a week but it feels very shitty.
Eh, one week isn't too bad. Just suck it up and get back in the gym and you'll feel better. I know this is a tough time for you but I think having this fight and doing this one thing you've been training for for so long will take your mind off things and make you feel pretty good.

I just got an opponent for my fight on Saturday. It's in a city called Drøbak, near Oslo. I'm so psyched right now. :D

The opponent is ranked nr. 3 in 81kgs in Norway, but he has much less experience than me. But I'm taking what I can get. About two months since the last time I was in the ring.

yep.. have one coming up, my first one..

started out just for the exercise, then after 3 weeks went in and joined the boxers. did 2 weeks of sparring, a broken hand, which meant i couldnt spar for 5 weeks. That was followed up by, yet another 2 weeks of sparring and again a broken hand, that took 4 weeks.. then i did another 2 weeks of sparring, and asked the trainers for a fight, they said yes, AND if that wasnt unlucky enough, 3 days prior to the fight, i got a cut while sparring, and couldnt participate..

so right now, im 2 weeks away from my first fight, not feeling that confident, as my preparations have been less then stellar. that combined with, that i have some technical issues, such a closing my eyes and ducking/rolling to low.

still have 2 weeks until the fight, so i have i little time to work on the issues or get injured again:lol:

I've had more people back out than I can shake a stick at. To be honest, it's making my enthusiasm wane....rapidly. These next bouts coming up, I think will be the last straw for me if the fall through. I had about 7 bouts lined up in the beginning of October and all but one of them has fallen through. I'm a ref and often times if it's a kid's first bout I'll give a lot of cautions for slapping without taking a point. For two reasons: 1. because most kids don't understand the rules and hand signals by their 1st fight (coach's fault) 2. Most kids slap a lot until they refine their skills a bit so when they are new I let them get away with a lot more than I let the more experienced kids get away with.

Had a muay thai exhibition bout against my training partner last sunday for Thai New Year.
We were fighting outdoors on some carpets and jigsaw matts thrown directly on sloped, pock-marked ground.

I say "exhibition" but it was harder than the last smoker bout I went to.
Had a hard time getting anything off, my footwork was garbage.

Landed like one decent combo.

Twisted both of my ankles, one real bad, but didn't feel it till the next day.

Caught a flying knee to the ribs from the same guy who drops everyone with knees to the ribs (including me the first time we sparred).
It knocked the wind out of me, but I kept going, finished out that round, and one more round till they called time.

Apparently my nose was bleeding too.

Taking the rest of the week off to heal up, second set of bruised ribs I've had this year from the same guy.
Just feel old.

Somewhat conflicted though, on one hand I feel like I need to spar hard every workout, on the other, the injuries & inability to train are reminding me why I'm not a huge fan of banging hard all the time.

I'm getting too old for this stuff.
July's my big event and then I'm done for a while.

EDIT: Woke up this morning with difficulty breathing. Went into the ER and got some X-Rays. It's official, my rib's busted. Hooray for Vicodin and local anasthetics.

Why do people think amateur records are important? The thing that's important is the level of experience and quality of the experience, almost everyone I know has to kind of guess their record.

Well part of it is the "losing isn't an option" mentality of Americans.

But I also think it's signs of a general trend.

Different sport, I know, but my experience with kickboxing is that in most of the competitive amateur circuits, guys won't have their first "official" amateur bout till they've had 5 to 10 unofficial interclubs/smokers. Dudes have 8 week, full-time, pro-style training camps before bouts & cut anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds (sometimes more) in order to make weight.

In mma a lot of amateurs are pros who just aren't getting paid for their bouts (ie guys with sponsorship deals that do nothing but train).

Going pro seems to be only for the elite, the guys who don't know any better, or the guys with no other options.

Well I agree with you. Some people don't take hard bouts because they are afraid of a L, even though hard bouts are what take you to the next level. Sometimes you do need to get in on a less than 50:50 bout, so long as its within reason (i.e. you're not pretty much guaranteed to get KTFO). On the other hand, I think people who have a good record are usually happier to tell it than those that don't (they say how many bouts they've had :)). I mean, records do mean something if they come with titles and wins against good boxers, but don't if your a guy repeatidly fighting 1 bout novices!

Couldn't agree more! I have a few losses on my record that I'm more proud of than some of my wins simply based on the competition.

I lost on points to the better man today. Fair and square. He quite often stops his opponents, but I was never buzzed at all (though I got a standing 8 count - BAH!). I didn't go in there just to survive, I wanted to win. I held quite good up with him at the beginning of each round, but then he more and more took control. Well, it was a good test for me. All in all it was an OK performance by me. Was hard to get the right distance and hold up good footwork. But, anyway... He's five years older than me, I have plenty of years left. His routine and strength made him win.

I'm probably fighting in October. Let's hope it's not a southpaw because my southpaw sparring partner and good friend broke or displaced his jaw in sparring tonight. Not sure at this point, as he's not back from the hospital yet. I hope he'll be okay, but my guess is he won't be fighting or sparring in the next few months. It was really fucked up because he realized that as well and was barely able to suppress the tears. I really feel for him, he's in awesome shape and gave me a hiding last Saturday in sparring. All that work, out the window.

Ps. no I did not do it.

He's actually a top bloke, you don't meet people that honest very often. There are a few people in the gym whose jaw I would not mind being broken, but he's not one of them.

Until now I got southpaw sparring multiple times a week, I think I sparred about 40 rounds with him just last week. I'm actually rather comfortable sparring them, although it does present problems with footwork mainly.

How did your fights go?

Obed Mbwakongo, the guy I was supposed to meet, didn't make it. That lazy cunt was "sick" and 7-8kgs over weight.

But I got another very good opponent and worked my way to a 2-1 victory.

Next up is Nationen Cup in Wiener Neustadt in Austria 24-27 September. And I see that the same home boxer I got totally robbed against last year will also enter. Time for revenge.

Oh, and before that I'm leaving to Bergen today to spar with some Brits.
