Re-re-re-reinjured the ankle. Something is very fishy with it, I have a big lump on it now, an inflammation most likely. I'll phone the doctor tomorrow. It just gave in out of nothing during roadwork.

that sucks about you ankle, i was intriuged by what sort of training you do i looked up your log, very impressed just spent like 10mins lookin over the whole thing.
Whats your record now? I would hate to think of the stamina of the guy that beat you in the contriverstial split decision.
Have you had the ankle examined at all?
Sparred about 30 rounds in the past week. I moved a bit further from the gym so I now cycle between 25 and 30 miles a day on top of that. There's a good chance I can fight late September, so I'll be focusing on that. I'm about 7 pounds over the light welter limit (that I can barely make) so we'll see how that works out in the next few weeks.

I'm still 0-1, I got injured two weeks after the fight. His stamina wasn't all that, he had a very low punch output except for the first 30 seconds. He got a gift, I'm hoping for a rematch :D

No, I kept procrastinating
There's still a lump on it, but it does not bother me much in boxing training. Injury risk is high so I need to be very careful.
I'm starting up my log again, training has picked up lately.

What you doing strength-wise? obviously you cant beat pull-ups/chin-ups and press ups, but i found kettle-bell work outs were a great addition to boxing training. one exercise in particular, but cant remember what its called :huh you basically start by holding it at arms length and squat then swing it up to chest height and repeat etc. a few 3s of that warms you up nice :good

I don't do much strength training at the moment. Did some weights (dumbells) about two weeks ago, which for me is very rare. I used to do a shitload of heavy manual labor (roadie work, construction, etc) so I never needed it.

Sparred a round with dinky toy headgear that made it impossible to tuck my chin. I found that out when I got clocked in the nose for the first time in god knows how long, with a jab for fucks sake. I was bleeding heavily, my white shirt is red now. Didn't see hooks coming either so I sparred a few more rounds without it and did fine.
After that I was persuaded by a heavier guy to do one more round, and was given a nice shiner, same place as the one two weeks ago.

I'm doing an 18 miler tomorrow across the moors. its a 16 mile route but the train station is 2 miles from the start point. i carry a 30kg bergen on these walks but push myself to do it in around 3 an a half hours so i have to run on some stretches.
I love bergen/hill training. after about 12 miles i'm in a world of my own, mostly filled with pain :good its usually raining up there too which helps motivate me to keep going.

RD thats bad i thought i broke my nose on tuesday but its just badly bruised
for a few days my mouth was all cut up and i spoke funny
It's on the cartilage part so it's not that bad. It's fully flexible now, I bet it even flaps around in the wind when I bike :D
Swelling decreased a little, I already get some air through the nose again. I'll be sparring again tomorrow.
I have the flu, which in combination with my broken nose makes sure I get no air at all through the nose :|

I've been like that myself, hope it clears up soon. How's the nose injury? Healing up ok?
Can't really tell because I still have a bit of a cold. Hope the nostrils clear up in the next few days. It doesn't hurt or anything so it won't prevent me from sparring.

Fuckin' A is!
Training is going well, I'm preparing for a fight again. I spar about 10 rounds a few times a week, 40+ rounds a week of sparring on top of other training. Lots of cycling too, as usual.
Current weight is about 146.5, I need to get close to 140.
I'm still around 146 pounds. Sparred about 15 rounds today, a few rounds with a pro (fights at 147) as well. Very strong guy, but I wasn't out of my league at all. My jab is getting very good, I can control the distance and pace with it against most people I spar.
My trainer had me "sparring" a 13 year old kid afterwards. I played defence and let him punch me. He kept his left hand low though, and I told him to keep it up a few times. He kept dropping it, so I thought it would be good to give him a light tap on the chin. He jabbed, I parried it and countered over the top with a very held back straight right. It connected flush, he wobbled and almost fell down. Thank god my trainer was watching and saw I barely tapped him. He cried a little then got very angry, I've never seen a 13 year old punch that hard
I'll log this week, just for fun.

20x2? that's some solid fitness there Doucheman.
We do that every wednesday and saturday, a full hour of two minute rounds. Intensity varies, but at a certain point you get so relaxed that it doesn't require that much energy. Your opponent gets tired as well, so the last few rounds we barely move any more and it becomes an infight.
Having said that, yesterday I felt so weak that I really struggled with 6x3.

Back to training. Took a week off, started again last Monday. Sparred against a pro today, about 5 rounds. He gave me a shiner but I landed my share of punches as well and did extremely well inside.
This guy btw. Lots of recent losses but he's better than you'd think. A lot of amateur experience as well.

Thats a fine sparring partner to have and looking at his losses......opponents have a BIG win ratio even if they have ( i dunno ) been padded.
Also gone the rounds with all of them bar one.

I'm snowed in so I can't get to the gym. Public transit is out of duty, and cycling there would not be smart in almost half a meter snow. I'm thinking about attempting a run later in the evening. Temperature will be down to minus 10 by then I guess.

Haven't updated the past while, but my training has been going steady. Lots of running, as the gym was often closed (snow, Christmas, New Years, etc), but I've been getting some good sparring in as well.
Unfortunately... my fight for the 10th has been cancelled though, my opponent apparently was not in fighting shape because of the partying season and pulled out.

How do you get in the regionals mate? If you have 2 guys at yoru gym same weight can both enter or just one? How does it all work?

Everyone with a license can enter, that's why I don't understand how only two guys entered at light welter. You simply enter the competition, and a draw decides who fights who.

Hey RDJ,
Sorry to post this in your training log but due to amount of posts or something I can't send you a PM, so I'll ask here.
I've seen that you've been in amateur bouts in the UK, I had a question about the medical - during it, when they test your vision, do they do any close examination of the eye itself? From what you've experienced, do you think it would be possible for the medical person to detect whether a person's had laser eye treatment? Or is there no real close examination of the eyes?
Thanks man, nice shiner. :!:
I'm not in the UK mate, I'm Dutch. Over here they don't examine the eyes at all.
Platinum.
04-18-2010, 04:56 PM
Ah shit, my bad. Looks like moving over there is the solution, haha. Do you know any other amateurs from the UK on this board I could forward my question to?
You could post a thread in the training section, there are quite a few UK based amateurs.

06-17-2010, 10:24 PM
Did you get to fight on the sixth?
No. Both dates fell through due to me being "injured". I have regular migraines (about four a week) so I'm not in a shape I wish to be fighting in.
Filmnpuck
07-01-2010, 02:19 PM
That sucks, man. Do you have a history of migraines or is this something new?
It pops up every once in a while. The worst seems to be behind me for now, I'll probably have another episode in seven or eight months.
Another streak of bad luck. I had a cycling accident yesterday and tore about every muscle and ligament in my neck and shoulder. The doctor said I was lucky being well trained because otherwise the collarbone itself would have given in instead. It'll be months before I'm back to where I was, it's unlikely I can make the nationals in September. Since I can only fight until December 2010, I may actually never fight again.
I'm in fucking shatters. Seriously. When I realised this may be the end of it my world collapsed.
PugilistStudent
07-11-2010, 04:08 PM
NOOOOO! dude that sucks! best of luck to you. I hope you recover.
Recovery is going so and so, it's been three weeks now. Still can't do much, but I have decided to slowly get back to training since doing nothing depresses the living shit out of me.
Jump rope didn't really hurt me as the shoulder movement is very subtle, as long as I don't cross the rope. Did about half an hour of jump rope and slow motion shadowboxing. I'm going for a 10 mile cycle in a few minutes, and do a short run in the evening.
The shoulder actually feels much better now that I exercise it again. Better range of movement, less pain. Today I did some shadowboxing, higher paced than yesterday but not all out yet, especially not with the right hand. After that went for roadwork which felt very good, my stamina hasn't deteriorated much yet. Going for a cycle later on, 10 mile at a very high pace.
I'm keeping my diet absolutely perfect at the moment to speed up recovery. Also because I got a little chubby in the past few weeks, and I don't like that one bit.

Very nice. Do you include Fartlek in your cycling?
My cycling is to get from A to B. The bike I'm on isn't exactly a racer either, it's a 10 year old bike weighing a fucking ton, carrying an extra ton of rust, and only the top gear works. It includes pedalling through head on winds with a 25 pound bag on your back.
Tue Sep 7
Went out for a run but I can't even focus on running. My mood is beyond shit and I need a rest day anyway. Fuck everything.

At the end of road work usually, I don't mention them separately. I do a lot of things that I don't mention, my warming up usually has callisthenics for example.
Because of all the cycling I can't do roadwork often, cycling 13 miles (and often more) plus road work and a boxing session is too much for the legs. If I had a car I'd run in the morning.

I'm sure cycling works diffrent muscles, I regularly used to cycle 16 miles a day for work and presumed my running fitness would benefit, but when I went for a run out of the blue it didn't take long for me to be fucked up.
I'm not saying it crosses over. Cycling and running both tax the legs, I can't combine that amount of cycling (which I have to do, no choice) with more roadwork than I already do. My stamina is top notch at this moment though, ring stamina, running stamina, cycling stamina, you name it.
Remember my goal isn't running, it's boxing. Both cycling and running aren't optimal, I need to conserve my legs for the workout that truly matters. Boxing.

That was a fucking good answer.
that half hour of skipping would bore me to death though :D
Why not carry the bike and run the last mile? on the return journey i mean, just to make it interesting :D
I was glad someone offered me a ride on the return journey. Twenty five or so pounds of equipment, plus about the same for the bike, no thanks ;)
I really like jump rope, it never bores me. Until I break a sweat it's no fun but when the sweat pours it's like dancing to me. I'm a white man so I can't dance, but I like skipping :D

Nah mate, running with 50lbs of equipment is my kind of fun haha
I'd still have to break that skipping time up tho, but horses for courses i guess.
How's the boxing going?
It's going well, despite the fact that I lost a close fight last Sunday. Another fight coming up in Rotterdam in two weeks and then a month later in Germany. Still a few more months of fighting left man, I'm enjoying it while I still can.

Nice one mate, good luck with the fights. you've got my respect for staying active and fighting as much as you can, its the best way aint it. you seem to have taken the loss in your stride too, so hat's off to you for that too. win some, lose some right, don't let it fuck with your head.
You turned pro yet? may as well be getting paid for it mate, and from the couple vids ive seen of your fights, i'd say you'd have few problems joining the pro ranks.
where in germany are you fighting? ive got a cousin over there in the army at the min.
It wasn't my first loss mate, and it was a close enough decision to not feel completely shitty. I wasn't beat up or anything. It was simply my own fault for being too hesitant, and I will learn from this. The guy I fought is a good boxer with a confusing style but I can take him if I fight like I did in the third round.
I'm not turning pro ever, it doesn't really attract me. There are a few more months of fighting left so I'll enjoy those first, but after that it's probably just sparring for me.
I'm fighting in Osnabrück, at an event called the Teuto Box Cup. First there's Rotterdam though :)
Rotterdam is definitive, opponent is known as well. Forgot to update my log but training has been good last week.

What Multi-vitamin do you take...?
Had my last fight ever in late October 2010, kept on training for about a month and then got depressed. Didn't train for about three months, lived like a total lunatic. Alcohol, smoking, bad food, no sports, etc. Climbed out of the mental darkness, and I just had my first short training session at the gym. Did about 50 minutes of work, high paced but could not keep it up for longer. Back again tomorrow, the fridge is packed with healthy stuff and I'm sick of being weak.

Who cares? One packed with synthetic vitamins, I bet. It's just a supplement.

Are you fighting again or just keeping fit for the sake of it? I know a lot of people struggle keeping it going if it's the latter. Good luck whatever it is you're doing it for.

Just for the sake of it mate. I turned 34 last year so amateur boxing ends for me. I'm going to struggle without the fighting drive, but I've come to the conclusion that I still need boxing to keep my head on straight.

Just because you can't fight anymore doesn't mean that you will stop learning and imrpoving, there are other goals that you can set yourself rather than winning fights. All the best RDJ.

Have you never thought about training people mate?
Yeah thought about it and assisted my trainer for a while training the youngsters. Then life smacked me in the chin (family problems, being dirt poor, trouble in women land, almost got homeless) and the depression came. For now I'm satisfied with not going crazy. I'll just pretend there's a fight on the horizon and block out the rest.

You stopped training because you could'nt fight.?
Turn professional, problem fixed.
It would be something to focus on, and work towards in training.
Pro boxing doesn't appeal to me and there is barely any here in Doucheland. Problem not solved at all.

Ended up at 3-5 (late starter, had my first fight at age 32). Lost the first two fights, then won three in a row, and lost my final 3 again. Was robbed once IMO (first fight), lost 2 on points, the other 2 were very close and could have gone either way.
