Ive been doing abit of running, I get bored quite easily though so ive only been doing a couple of miles (not that i could do alot more).

The more you run, the better you will be at it and the less boring it will be. It takes a while but it can actually be fun.

I've noticed headphones help me when I run. With them, I can run forever, but without them I feel naked in a sence and get bored quite easily. My two cents...

What drills are you using RDJ for attack and defence?
Also how many fights have you had? How long you been training?
What drills are you using RDJ for attack and defence?
Nothing special really just normal gym work like being hit with certain combinations and defending against them. Start simple and slow, and make it harder as you go along. First defend against just jabs, then add in the right hands, then hooks and finally against everything. The focus was on defense, not offense.
Also how many fights have you had? How long you been training?
My first fight will be in February, I started very late (age 28 ) and it wasn't the plan to fight at first. I've been training for almost 4 years now, the first of which I never set foot in a ring though.
Wed Dec 17
No time to go to the gym today so I biked to the swimming pool and I'm about to do a short roadwork session with some shadowboxing. As soon as my food settles.

i have abit of advice for your fight. i notice when people start out they throw fast shoulder punches so just throw your normal shots dont do tippy tappys.
also your boxin to have fun so enjoy it its better if you go out and have fun. im a confidence fighter who gets better if im winning so i always go out to have fun
I've been boxing for a while I just haven't had a fight yet. An exhibition a while ago and that's it, but I've been sparring two or three times a week for years now.

I don't know what a polish bike ride is exactly, but I do know it's something rather filthy :D
I live 5 miles from the gym, hence the two times 5 mile ride.
Fri Dec 19
Gym's closed, and I don't have much time. Hence nothing but a short roadwork session.
3.9 miles, on soft surfaces.

You seem to have a good and solid training routine. Keep up the good work. :good

I've had them for a while but someone else needed em so I gave mine. Perhaps when my coach has new ones made I'll get a set again.

Thanks mate. I think it's a bit of a bore at the moment. All I do is box, run, bike and swim. I wish it was summer so I could swim outside, go out in a canoe, stuff like that.

Alright then.
Bore? I love it. :D The problem for me is that I usually train by myself most of the time. But then again I travel a lot for fighting. Right now it's just a little break between fights.
Do you have many guys to spar with?
Yeah, I hate swimming inside in the winter. That's a real bore. It's so refreshing to swim in the summer. I do it maybe twice a day if the weather is fine.
RDJ, relax and enjoy the holiday a bit, ok. You can get back at it on Monday. :D

There are 3 or 4 guys close to my weight I spar a lot with, and some heavier ones I prefer to avoid :D

I will. I'm taking a girl I know to a nearby Island on Friday. But as you know I don't cope with inactivity too well so I prefer staying busy ;)

Holy shit, 12 rounds on the heavy bag? I think i've done that many when i just started boxing, but right now, anything beyond 6 rounds becomes somewhat boring. Or did you "wissel it af" with other exercises?
I try to switch up my rounds on the bag so it isn't boring. Like, one round focusing on speed, another on power, one throwing only jabs, one freestyle...etc.

I do the same but when the bell sounds for the 30 second break, I do speed round then. That way I'm never really stopping.

She's rather easy, so that's a given. What worries me is meeting her parents and shit like that. I've never done that as formal as this and it scares me.

Most villages in Frisia have one, the picture I posted in the lounge is a few hundred yards away. In a 10 mile radius there are at least 5 more. But most of our canals have frozen over and they only need a couple of nights more frost before they're safe. A few nights more even and the most famous skating event in the world will be held.

I pace myself in the warming up, but the reason I can keep it up IMO is nutrition. I'm on a ridiculously healthy diet when I workout and it's paying off lately.

Nutrition in my unhumble opinion is vastly overrated for someone who is reasonably lean/fit. They process bad things a lot better than out-of-shape people. There were days at uni when out of sheer boredom I ate 4-5 mars bars because they were on offer and I am the fittest I've been in a long while. 152-154lbs of MEAN MACHINE! Not exactly, but meh.
Hard work is much, much, much more important, for me. I am not affected if I have eaten kinda badly that day.
however, on the whole, I eat quite well, and take a fair few supplements most of the time.
However I am 12-13 years younger than you so I can probably get away with it.
Faggit.
I think it's severely underrated, 1000 kcal from mars bars will be worth less than 1000 kcal from broccoli and such. The amount of nutrients (vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals) determines how valuable a food source is. Let's say you eat enough, but don't get enough iron. You'll be gassed in no time because iron is needed to transport oxygen in blood, so despite having enough calories your performance will suffer.

Young guys aren't in tune with their bodies I don't think. Once you get older and you've lived in your body for 30 years you start to notice the effects of what 4 candy bars does to you. You may not be fat and out of shape....yet but it will effect your performance and what you can push your body to do. You can't drive as far in a car that is low on crappy gas. Just like you can't run your body very far on crappy food.

Amy doesn't like me but that's cool, she's the more accomplished fighter of the two of us for sure and I have to respect what she does.
I'm just saying that I don't feel a LOT better if I eat super-clean and if I eat semi-clean.
typical day would be eggs and fruit for breakfast, pork chops and veg or spaghetti bolognese and veg (the former on weight days) and a pwo shake and usually a pizza for dinner. And I was progressing nicely like that. However snacks are either fruit or chocolate. I'm just saying people overrate eating clean, it's a lot of work that isn't totally worth it for me and it's no fun. :)
I've been in the army and you'd be surprised how far you can go on crappy/no food.
To each their own though, I'm not going to get on the internet warhorse of "LOLZ U SUX IM RITE UR WRONG AND GAY" :D
Keep up the good work, RDJ. What's your name anyway, RDJ makes you sound like a wutang wanabe that didn't cut it because he was white and a fag. :D

Good man MrSmall.
I'm going to say this only because I like you and I think you've got some potential...
You'll go a lot farther a lot faster in boxing as soon as you open your mind and drop the know-it-all attitude that you sometimes have. That's the biggest thing I see holding back so many young guys in the sport. We've all been beginners at some point. The sooner you admit that and soak up everything from the more experienced people on here and in your gym, the faster you'll rise to the top.
/rant over....carry on.
MrSmall

I never said I was a know-it-all, I know what I know from my experience of training. I am the first to admit you people have more experience in the field than me if you've noticed!
I am always willing to learn something from more experienced people.
If I come off as a know-it-all it's just my character its not really on purpose to sound like I know everything, because I don't and I freely admit it!
Thanks for the encouragement and feedback, Amy, appreciated. Right now I'm revising for my first University exams and not doing a very good job of it.
Get off here and hit the books!

No training today. Hurt my elbow yesterday in sparring, no idea what happened though. I have a bit of a swelling, it's already better than yesterday. I also cut my tongue in the first round. I'm a bit of a slow starter it seems, I get hit before I wake up.

I wanted to do just bag work because I had a migraine attack today, but I was called into the ring anyway. First punch that landed made me regret it, but it went better from that point on. It was my own fault anyway, I had my chin in the air. Got hit flush on the jaw and my head felt like a gong. Lesson re-learned.

Same here. It almost disappeared completey after I started to drink energy drinks with lots of carbs. I used to sweat out way too much.
Nutrition was the cause in my case as well, but not yesterday. I was well fed and well hydrated so that can't be it. Probably just stress, it wasn't a major migraine anyway. I was still able to workout, and even spar so it was just minor. And the worst part was in my sleep, I just woke up in the aftermath, you know how it feels.

Wow man. You must be getting in quite good shape now, eh?
It's getting there. My condition is okay, but what matters of course is how I do in sparring. The problem there is that I'm a slow starter. I think I need to have a round or two of light sparring before my match, I wake up after I've been hit.

Training has really picked up :)
Indeed it has but sparring with be a bit less this week I think. I almost broke my nose in sparring yesterday, there's a big lump on it now and a minor shiner under both eyes.

I'm going to do more shadowboxing in future workouts, I'm aiming for a 1:1 ratio between bag work and shadowboxing. I focus too much on punching hard, I need to loosen up. Was offered some sparring by the same guy who almost broke my nose on Thursday, which I respectfully declined. I can learn a lot from him, but I'm going to let things heal a little first. Perhaps Monday.

What are doing for recovery for the blood and bruises? I used to take epsom salt baths but not really sure how effective they were.

Nutrition. I make sure I get all the amino acids, fats, vitamins, (trace) minerals, anti-oxidants, anti-inflammants and other phytochemicals I need. In practice that means whole natural foods only. My diet contains things like seaweed, mustard seeds, loads of herbs, a dozen different teas, etc. I'm a food freak but not a big fan of modern nutrition "science", if you can even call it that.
A shiner only lasts a few days for me, some people walk around with it for weeks. I recover quickly from workouts, most people I spar with are about 10 years younger and train half the amount I do. I like to think it's working.

Yeah I understand the need for nutrition. The biggest weakness I had in Pre Early 2008 was my lack of knowledge in both training and nutrition. I'm a lot more open to peoples opinions and thoughts on those two subjects now. I used to go through the same motions and eat the same shit day in and day out and realized that I was never challenging my body or giving it the best fuel it needed. That's why I like these logs to see how people deal with training, nutrition, recovery, etc.

I dunno how the fuck anyone can do a manual job monday to friday and still find the time and energy to get in 3 or more gym sessions a week. I'm always too knackered to go after work, and if I do force myself to go, I'm too fucked to do anything worthwhile.
I miss shift work.

I hear you, Rakim. Up until about a month ago I was training every day, but with work and school it was really wearing me down (plus I have my senior honors thesis due for school in about three weeks time). I was getting really stressed out, acting grumpy as shit with people. It wasn't good. I decided to take a little time off from training to get my shit together. I feel like I've regained my peace of mind, only problem is the training has been non-existant.
RDJ, about how long does one of these regular workouts take you to finish? (I'm thinking in the 2-and-a-half hour range, no?)

What do your footwork drills consist of? Lots of side to side with bobbing and weaving I imagine.
Great job btw.

We practised moving while punching. First moving forward while jabbing, next including the straight right. Then we did the same going backwards, and later to the sides.
Great job btw.

I will start a Log/Thread tomorrow, fuckit, why not ! ! !

No it was rather heavy sparring. I actually trained yesterday because I felt really good and days off don't do much for me at all, I feel clumsy afterwards. No excuses though, because I was in good shape when I entered the ring.

Hmm not so good with the fight, yet you are kinda upbeat, certainly a positive. Got to say, you are the only fighter i know of, Ams or Pro that trains and spars hard right up to fight night, from what you have said.

My legs are used to the cycling, I've been doing it since birth. Besides it's not like I have a choice, the trip to the gym and back is simply a 10 mile cycle :D
Fair enough. I'll might add cycling to my training too. :think
Fuck. Forgot to update the log.
Let's see. Moved to the new place wednesday, did not box. Thursday was nothing either, because I lost my means of transport.

Interesting...do you think that Arran guy is really going to fight you?

It won't be a fight, I promised to spar him and that is all it will be.

You do realise he is not going to go through with it because your not replying to his messages apparently.

He should have warned me about that in a text message then, the ones he did send indicated no problems.
Sparred again for the first time in about a month, it went quite ok. I'm not going to update this log like I previously did. My ring stamina isn't what it was before I got injured, but it's getting there. I felt very comfortable in the ring, more in control than ever.
Been working out daily for the past few weeks. Not a lot of boxing, about twice a week, due to schedule issues. Sparred tonight, I felt great physically just a little rusty in the first rounds. I should spar more over the next few weeks.
Got an exhibition tomorrow, I'm not very concerned about it as it's against a gym buddy and there is no weight limit obviously.
