View Full Version : Why do people even watch boxing when....

every boxer is either shot or should retire and any opponent is a bum.....all promoters are greedy and there are no sponsors for televised boxing so we must watch PPV which are all mismatches, over-hyped, are garbage or crap.
What kind of people keep going back?....and continue to check in on these forums for more? Sick, addicted, warped wanna be's with little or no life except to critisize athletes who put their lives on the line each time they step through the ropes and businessmen who risk their money without corporate support hoping that the next show produced a prospect who can help them save the mortgage.
If you all are such experts I want to ask
1) How many fights have you had
2) How many boxing shows have you promoted?

Well while I agree that many of us (myself included) can become too harsh, it is not that way all the time.
And you can make very good observations about a sport without having played it. I don't recall seeing Merchant in the ring ever, but he has good insight.

4 Amateur fights this year. I just started boxing in January. Not because I want to make a career out of it, moreso because I wanted to gain a better understanding of what its like to be in a ring. And I have a lot of fun training and in the ring. Its helped me gain a greater appreciation for all fighters since my first fight.
Currently 3-1 though I think I should have lost my first fight and be 2-2 to be honest.
The only fighters I would ever consider calling shot, or bums, or should retire(off the top of my head) are Gatti, Cawley, Holyfield, respectively. There are others but those are the ones that stand out in my mind. I don't think anyone can disagree with me on the first two, I expect there are some who would disagree with regards to Holyfield, but that is my personal opinion.

I certainly agree with Holyfield needed to retire. Everytime I think of him fight Wlad Klitscho, I think of Rocky IV. It would be sad to see him injured later on in life. I think Jones needs to give it up, and Morales as well.

Yep. Its not because I don't like Holyfield, its that I don't want to see him push his career too far and not be able to enjoy and be healthy in his post-boxing life.

It's unbelieveable that this jerk is wasting his time trash talking the oldest American sport. His arguement is a generalization of the sport and a gross oversimplification of boxing fan banter. The degree of generalizations in this persons flawed logic makes his argement completely irrelevent and pointless to speculate on. Get a job instead of whining about other people's hobbies.

Over 50 amateur fights, and interned with 2 major promotional companies (GSP and Goosen Tutor). And i don't come on a message board calling out fans, so how many fights have you had and how many promotions have u been a part of? I'm in the gym 5 days a week. And how many ringside fights have you been to this year?
Criticism has been the nature of the game throughout history. Any sport. It's how it is. You don't think football players and baseball players get criticism? It's an element of all sports and it brings athletes to rise to the top. When an athlete retires they are praised and missed, during their prime they are questioned and doubted endlessly, those who deal with it are the greats.
This thread pisses me off almost as much as the guy posting it. Fucking ignorant. Just a newbie pissed of his man-crush is getting picked on in the forums, get over yourself.
we watch boxing because we love it. period.
without challenging our fighters to fight tougher opponents and perform better through our criticism we'd never be able to seperate the good from the great, and that goes for any sport. It's the challenges and proving critics (and fans) wrong that drives fighters to continue to carve a legacy. It's ignorant people like the guy who started this thread who cry because their favorite fighter can't escape criticism that make it suck. Please...we ALL have our favorite fighters, and we all hear criticism everyday. We all deal with it. But in the end, it brings to light their achievements, strengths, and weaknesses, and what they need to do to achieve greater things. There's nothing wrong with presenting healthy argument. Debating and Sports have and always will go hand in hand.

and starting this thread makes you a genius

i graduated as a business major and studied sports promotion, had amateur boxing experience, so i contacted the promoters and sent resume. Contact promotional groups for information, most are very generous in helping out.

I wish everyone who talked shit actually stepped inside a ring to spar with boxers. When you attempt to even try this sport you gain a huge appreciation for every boxer in the sport just for stepping in the ring.

My first post of this thread was complete satire making fun of seemingly every post which calls boxers "bums" and "shot".

its no different than a steelers fan calling the browns bums, or eagles fans calling the giants bums, or yankees fans saying the red sox suck. It's the nature of sports.
Now in terms of being shot, where is this coming from, what fighter do u think isnt shot that everyone is saying is shot? Holyfield?? Morales?? Roy Jones??
I'm sorry, but they're both shells of their former selves, they aren't in their prime. It's no different than sports writers doubting a quarterback like Donovan McNabb after leaving several seasons with injuries...doubting Michael Jordan after his first retirement. Fact is, when you get old and injure a lot you're never the same as you were in your prime but that doesnt take away from the greatness you achieved and when an athlete retires they are always remembered for the great things they do.

VERY WELL STATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every fan of every sport criticizes and many have never participated in such:good
The guy starting this?? Should go play with himself and have a wonderful evening:yep

i know where ur coming from, it bothers me too when people like Carlito go off on certain fighters and argues Margarito is the second coming of Jesus...but fact is we're all fans whether we fight or not and we're the ones that pay to see it. I just thought it was messed up to come at everyone on the message boards like they're not legitimate fans because they have an opinion. We all do, and we should all be able to share them without calling people out. And i never would have been such a dickhead if it weren't coming out like "have you ever been in the ring or been a promoter" etc. knowing i've been involved with both for many years and i too as a boxing fan have opinions.

you can pretty much go to any school and major in marketing because essentially promoting is marketing an event. Starting small you'll get more involvement, but either way you see free fights live :D
The business is tricky in terms of a career because as they say, it takes money to make money, but you need to start somewhere to get recognition in matchmaking, promoting, etc. It's all how bad you want it. PM me if you got more questions.
